Our close-knit community is centrally located in the Milwaukee – Chicago corridor, making this area an ideal choice for residential, business and industrial location. Our area is the home of the Racine County Fair and Great Lakes Dragaway. This area has an excellent K-8 public school system, each has its own local school board. Graduates from all four schools move on to Union Grove Union High School, which is well known for its high standards of education. THE HEART OF

Racine County Union Grove

Located in the heart of Racine County, the Village of Union Grove is home to nearly 5,000 residents and more than 200 businesses. Centrally located between Chicago and Milwaukee, Union Grove offers the perfect balance between metropolitan commerce and small town feel. Union Grove is home to the Racine County Fair, the Great Lakes Dragaway racetrack, and the nearby Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery and Veterans Home. Served by four major highways and two major interstates, the village’s prime location, quaint downtown, and growing community makes Union Grove a great place to live, work, and play.

Kansasville, Dover

The Town of Dover includes a number of unincorporated communities, most notably Kansasville. Home to nearly 4,000 residents, the town still enjoys a thriving local economy, boasts its own 4K through eight-grade school district and prides itself on moving forward, while keeping a keen eye on its rich past. Offering quaint country charm and unique experiences for visitors and residents alike, Dover offers something for everyone. If you’re a foodie looking for farm-to-plate options, stop out during the summer months to shop the area’s many roadside farm stands. Featuring delectable locally grown produce, you’ll enjoy the benefits of eating fresh, whole foods, and you might just meet the farmers who lovingly grew the bounty. Hoping to host a rustically elegant affair in the area? The Farm at Dover is the perfect venue for special occasions, from weddings and anniversaries to milestone birthdays and reunion gatherings, the venue boasts seven acres of breathtaking gardens and paths, a painstakingly restored Victorian home, and a show-stopping barn that exudes a rustic, yet refined feel. For the weekend warriors, there are plenty of outdoor activities to keep you moving the whole year through. Richard Bong State Recreation Area is located in Kansasville and offers endless options for outdoor enthusiasts, from camping, hiking, boating, and horseback riding in the summer months, to ATV, snowmobiling, and hunting in the fall and winter months. Be sure to

grab a season pass and visit often. If you prefer life by the water, spend some time in the Eagle Lake community. With five parks to choose from, a golf course, and 529 acres of lake to boat on, you can enjoy a lake lifestyle without the resort price tag. After a day of fun in the sun, be sure to stop at Michael’s on the Lake for traditional American Cuisine and casual fine dining at its best.

Raymond Raymond is a rural community just minutes

from Milwaukee, Racine and Burlington, providing a high quality of life, with access to all southeast Wisconsin has to offer. Raymond was incorporated in 1846. Originally founded and named after Elisha Raymond, it has historically been an agrarian community with strong family and community values. Recently Raymond has worked hard to maintain its character while providing economic opportunities along the Interstate 94 corridor, our eastern border.

Yorkville

The Town of Yorkville was organized by the

Wisconsin Territorial Legislature on Feb. 7, 1842, and included what are now parts of the towns of Raymond, Norway and Dover; Yorkville was incorporated in 1846. Yorkville, with a current population of 3,092, is primarily a rural community consisting of rolling farm fields and scattered residential development. Yorkville does have small pockets of commercial development, such as the Grand View Business Park, which is located along Interstate 94 near Wisconsin Highway 20 (Washington Avenue). Yorkville surrounds the Village of Union Grove near its southwest corner. Union Grove provides goods and services to the town’s residents not otherwise available in Yorkville. Union Grove also provides a stable character for central Racine County. Every July, the Racine County Fair is held at the Racine County Fairgrounds in Yorkville. Yorkville is also home to the Ives Grove Golf Links, which offers 27 holes of premium golf. The Modine Benstead Observatory is home to a 16-inch telescope and a 14-inch telescope for stargazing.

Union Grove High School Community is the heart of Union Grove and we are so fortunate that these extended community members are reaching out to support our Broncos in their future career endeavors. Continuing to build on the success of the Bronco Business and Career Expo, administration and staff have reached out to community members through various events to establish a relationship that will help our students and staff have a better understanding of the 21st Century skills needed to be marketable in today’s workforce. Additionally, by partnering with businesses, opportunities are created for students, offering valuable work-based learning opportunities such as job shadows, internships, and youth apprenticeships. Career and Technical Education experiences and programs provide a springboard to future success by allowing students to explore future

careers while acquiring credits and certifications. Union Grove High School’s use of business and Gateway Technical College partnerships caught the eye of the Milwaukee 7, an economic development group that includes the sevencounty region surrounding Milwaukee County. The Milwaukee 7 spent an evening with students, parents, administration, and

staff to share our vision, mission, and successes surround school to work initiatives. These businesses have graciously opened the door to our staff and students by offering tours, interviews, job shadows, and work opportunities. Thank you to all of our area business partners and their efforts to help students meet the needs of a diverse workforce.

Union Grove Elementary School Welcome to Union Grove Elementary where academic excellence and community connection are our priorities. We are pleased to share just a few of the reasons we are so proud of our school and hope you will visit us soon. Union Grove Elementary has about 850 students enrolled for the school year in grades 4K through eight, including 55 students in our new 4K program. Our building, which underwent an extensive 8

UNION GROVE COMMUNITY GUIDE 2017

remodel and addition in 2003, includes a computer lab, two gymnasiums, two kitchens/cafeterias and a library/media center. On the grounds there are several playgrounds, including one for children with physical challenges built in part with donations from the Union Grove Lions Club. Since so many of our students walk to school, we are delighted to have the Pony Path, which is a system of paved walkways

on our grounds so children may avoid busy streets or cross them safely. We continue to incorporate STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) across the curriculum with the use of Chromebooks in grades six through eight, and by using the engineering design process through the use of Lego Educational Kits donated by our PTO. UGES also enters a team in the annual U.G. Chamber of Commerce Pumpkin

Chuckin contest where students design, build and demonstrate a trebuchet. Students also have use of COWS (computer on wheels), which they can use to access the Internet through our wireless network. We are fortunate to be in a

community with the foresight to anticipate the needs of our students and families. Through their generosity, we have a beautiful and functional facility that is host to many student and village activities including UGES band concerts and

plays, extracurricular sporting events, Village of Union Grove Recreation Department programs, fundraisers and much more. We invite you to visit our website at www.uges.k12. wi.us and get to know us better.

Kansasville School Nestled on a quiet Racine County highway is Kansasville School, a 4K through eighth-grade building that boasts of a proud heritage and a bright future. The small, quaint school bustles daily with students eager to learn the skills necessary to survive in the 21st century. Visitors quickly recognize the warm welcoming atmosphere that percolates throughout the building. This small learning community

operates around a core of traditional values. It stresses and encourages family involvement. The school, led by a dedicated staff of teachers, provides a state of the art education. Dover No. 1 School District offers students, grades 4K through eight, a variety of educational options for resident students and students choosing to open enroll from a non-resident district. Some of the specific

education programs offered to eligible students who are enrolled in and attending the District include the following: • Early childhood special education for students who are at least 3 years old, but not yet school age; • Special education for students with disabilities; • Gifted and talented education; • Individualized program and curriculum modifications; and • Summer school programming.

Raymond School The Raymond School District is dedicated to providing a child-centered learning environment expecting all students to learn and succeed. We commit to providing and utilizing a progressive, relevant curriculum, encouraging all students to become responsible citizens prepared to meet the challenges of the future. At Raymond School, we strive to provide the best education for our students. Read some of the testimonials below to hear

first-hand, from our alumni. “I attended Raymond from K-8th grade and graduated 8th grade in 1985. I would love nothing more than for my child to have grown up the way we did and go to Raymond School. To me Raymond is home and the school and the community represents family values that cannot be found elsewhere.” – Mindy (Hoye) Heather, Henderson, Nev., Class of 1985. “I attended Raymond School K-8th grade, graduating in 1979.

Having stayed grounded in Raymond since childhood, my husband and I were fortunate to have had our children attend and graduate from Raymond School. I can’t express enough how thankful I am for the teachers, administrators, School Board and countless staff members for their tireless commitment to the betterment of our school and the success and prosperity of our children and community.” – Karen Brenton Kalman, Raymond, Wisconsin Class of 1979

Yorkville School is recognized for its outstanding public education system. Yorkville School is known as a “choice”

school – not a private, voucher school – but as a desirable public school for open enrollment. Nearly 100 families who reside in neighboring districts elect to send their children to Yorkville Elementary School. Yorkville School is rooted in tradition and embraces the small, rural school culture. At the same time, Yorkville School keeps current with modern technology, programming, and best instructional practices.

Racine Astronomical Society and the Modine-Benstead Observatory Through the generosity of two local business executives, A. B. Modine, founder of Modine Manufacturing Company, and H. M. Benstead, Chief Executive Officer of the Western Publishing Company, construction of an observatory began in 1961. These funds were used to purchase 3.5 acres of land, construction of the observatory and the 16-inch telescope. Later, the Racine Astronomical Society added a second dome which contains a 14-inch telescope. The Racine Astronomical Society continues its fine tradition of promoting interest in astronomy by holding public nights, which are open to anyone with an interest in astronomy. At these events, visitors are able to view astronomical

objects through the club’s telescopes and member’s telescopes. The Observatory is located four miles west of Interstate 94 at the intersection of County Highway A and 63rd Drive in the Town of Yorkville. For more information visit www.rasastro.org.

CHRISTMAS COMES TO Christmas is a magical time of year and Union Grove kicks off the season right with two days of family fun and hometown traditions. Our annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Village Square is held on the Thursday after Thanksgiving from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Come and enjoy carolers, hot chocolate and cookies until the lighting of the tree which signals the arrival of who else but Santa Claus. He and his happy elf arrive on a bright red fire engine, with flashing lights and sirens down Main Street. Christmas stockings are handed out to all children younger than 11, compliments of the Union Grove Lions Club. While waiting for your turn to see Santa, visitors will enjoy Christmas music which starts that night and is played throughout the Christmas Season. Don’t forget to stop by the nostalgic Kiwanis Christmas Tree stand, kitty corner from the park. Feel free to warm your hands by the fire and maybe go home with a fresh cut Christmas tree. The Kiwanis tree sale is open for two weekends and the night of the tree lighting. The first Friday after Thanksgiving is Ugly Christmas Sweater Day in the Heart of Racine County. Residents are encouraged to wear Ugly Christmas Sweaters and spread Christmas cheer in the Community by connecting,

Union Grove

giving, reconnecting and being kind. While wearing their Ugly Christmas Sweaters Heart of Racine County residents are encouraged to connect with those that matter to them including family, friends and colleagues. Participants are to be kind to everyone they encounter by holding that door, returning that smile and lending that helping hand. The fun continues on the first Saturday in December, beginning with Breakfast with Santa. During this limited seating event, children young and old enjoy a delicious breakfast served by some of Santa’s best elves. Before and after breakfast children can spend some time creating crafts in the workshop or getting their picture taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Don’t wait to get your tickets for this event because there are none available at the door. Tickets

go on sale the last Saturday in November. Join in the fun and go on a Cookie Walk to the area businesses where you will get a unique cookie to put in that year’s tin. LOOKING BACK

Time has been kind to Union Grove First, it brought in the kind of settler who stayed and put down roots, rather than the kind who grabbed up land for speculation, and then raced off with his profits to newer settlements. Starting in the early 1840s, former New Englanders came here, naming the settlement, “Union Grove” for the large grove of burr oak trees which covered the countryside, and for the one-room Union School, located at what is now the intersection of Highway 45 and 11. Tradesmen were attracted to the tiny settlement along the old Indian trail leading to Lake Michigan because it was about one day out, by loaded grain wagon, from the Port of Racine. The heavily laden wagons moved slowly over the rutted trails. There were frequent broken axles. Erastmus Cadwell set up his blacksmith shop on what is now Old Settlers Park on the west edge of Union Grove. William Reid had a small general store nearby from which he sold supplies to travelers and to neighboring farmers. A Mr. Beer constructed an inn of homemade brick on the north side of the Indian trail. The log building housing the Union School was erected in 1846. It served as a school, church and community hall until 1850 when members of the Congregational Church erected their first house of worship on what is now Martin’s used car lot at the corner of Highway 11 and Vine Street. By 1850, all the essentials of community life were located

along the Burlington-Racine trail, including homes, church, school, inn, store and smithy.

All aboard

Around 1853, agents from the Racine, Janesville and Mississippi Railroad Company started buying up right-of-way land north of the grove of burr oak trees. Land prices in the area jumped from $6 to $45 per acre. Dr. Ammon P. Adams, Union Grove’s first physician, and eleven other area settlers incorporated the Union Grove Land Company. They proceeded at once to lay out a village, with the railroad tracks running through the middle of their land. They persuaded the railroad company to build a station on the south side of the tracks and the Land Company erected a hotel north of the tracks. The first train arrived in Union Grove on Thursday, June 19, 1856.

First lot sold

William Reid purchased the first lot from the Land Company, just south of the railroad station. During the winter of 1855, Reid moved his log cabin, which housed his general store, from its

Old Settlers Park location to his new lot. The move was made by placing skids under the cabin and pulling it with oxen over the frozen ground. Reid promptly re-opened his store and began selling provisions to the railroad workers as well as to area farmers. Through the years, time has moved slowly and easily here in Union Grove. The village never became a flashy kind of place – that’s been all to Union Grove’s good, giving it stability, character and a legacy of lovely homes and legends of neighborly generosity and helpfulness. Today, Union Grove is on the threshold of what is expected to be a bright and rewarding future. Union Grove is growing. It expects continued, steady growth as it becomes interwoven to a greater degree in the growing urban complex blanketing southeastern Wisconsin. However, Union Grove seems to have its own way with time – and that’s partly what makes it tick! Source: American Legion Auxiliary’s Community History files. WWW.UNIONGROVECHAMBER.ORG

Raymond Center – 1916 The town of Raymond was first called “Black Hawk,” by act of the state Legislature in 1846, but at the same session an act was subsequently passed, reorganizing the town, and giving it the name of Raymond, for the pioneer who had so sturdily established and maintained his settlement in the town. In the settlement of Raymond Township, a little village grew up in the exact center, which in time became known as “Raymond Center.” A post office was established there in the late 1830s or 40s by the name of “Raymond” and the word “Center” was finally dropped.

For some time, it was a trading point for the people of the township, but when the post office was discontinued most of the business interests sought new locations. A Congregational Church was established here at an early date and the old church and schoolhouse still mark the site of “Raymond Center” after the greater part of its glory has departed. Among the early settlers were Stephen O. Bennett, Joseph Nelson and Thomas West, all of whom afterward represented Racine County in the State Legislature.

Kansasville– 1916

This little village is located in the southern part of Dover Township, on the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad, 18 miles west of Racine. No plat of the village was ever filed at the register of deeds. Among the early settlers in this part of the county were Samuel Ormiston, James Ballack, Aaron Putnam and the McKeys. Kansasville grew up after the railroad was built and received its name when the post office was established there a little later. Located in western Racine County, the Town of Dover has a rich history dating back to the mid-1830s. Captain John Trowbridge, along with his wife, Mary, were the first settlers to Dover. They arrived in early 1936 with other notable settlers, including Samuel Ormiston and J. Sellers arriving later that year. Focusing on agriculture and homesteading to sustain their families and grow the community, the Town of Dover enjoyed steady growth. By the late 1850s, as many as eight trains were stopping in the area each day.

Dover Township – 1916 Dover Township, one of the southern tier, is coextensive with Congressional Township No. 3, Range 20 East. It is bounded on the north by the Town of Norway, east by Yorkville, south by Kenosha County, and west by the Towns of Burlington and Rochester. Its area is 36-square miles. Eagle Lake is situated a little south of the center. Its outlet and the Muskego Creek, which crosses the northwest corner, are the only water courses in the township. The first settler in Dover was Captain John T. Trowbridge, who brought his family, consisting of a wife and two sons, to Racine County in 1836. The writer has been unable to ascertain just when the Township of

Dover was established as a separate jurisdiction, but it was some time subsequent to Feb. 2, 1846, for on that date Governor Dodge approved an act defining the boundaries of the Town of Yorkville, which included the eastern half of the present Town of Dover. Dover Township is one of the most beautiful and fertile farming sections of Racine County. The Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul (formerly, The Western Union) Railroad crosses the southern portion and there are two stations within the town limits – Kansasville and Dover. The population in 1910 was 820, and the assessed value of the property in 1915 was $2,377,787, or nearly $3,000 for each man, woman and child living in the township.

Southern Wisconsin Center Campus In the Town of Dover, veterans have found a great place to call home with the establishment in 2002 of the Wisconsin Veterans Home at Union Grove on the Southern Center Campus. The original buildings on the campus were built for Southern Wisconsin Center for the Developmentally Disabled (current name) in 1919. The center provides a wide variety of programs and services designed to assist and prepare individuals to live successfully in the setting that best meets their needs. Fairchild Hall and Shemanske Hall were the first two SWC buildings converted for the Wisconsin Veterans Home. In 2001, they were reopened as assisted living facilities. This was followed by the construction of Gates Hall, originally opened as assisted living and now being used as skilled nursing facilities. Boland Hall, a 120-bed skilled nursing facility, opened in 2006. Maurer Hall is a member center. Also on the campus is a VA Clinic to provide outpatient medical care services, including pharmacy support. A Veteran’s Assistance Program helps homeless vets with vocational training, education and life skills in a structured living environment. The adjacent Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery was dedicated in 1998. It encompasses 35 acres of scenic countryside and has another 70 acres for expansion.

The Grove SnoHawk Snowmobile Club is a non-profit organization that has been dedicated to supporting and promoting the sport of snowmobiling in Racine County for nearly 40 years. Along with the annual installation and maintenance of about 50 miles of some of the best riding trails in southeastern Wisconsin, the SnoHawks take pride in giving back to their community. For nearly as long as the club has been in existence, they’ve provided safety education to more than 1,700 snowmobilers through a Department of Natural Resources certified snowmobile safety course held annually in early December. Along with the many opportunities to volunteer on the club’s trail committee, there are several social events sponsored by the SnoHawks. Whether it’s the Spring Grand Dinner fundraiser, the annual “club trip” up north, or the impromptu ride on SnoHawk trails, there are ample possibilities to connect with others who love the sport of snowmobiling by being a member of the club. For more information on joining the Grove SnoHawk Snowmobile club, or to register for the DNR safety course, visit www.grovesnohawks.com or email info@grovesnohawks.com

and field, cheerleading, forensics, academic competitions, jazz band, and a school musical production. Partnering with the Union Grove Recreation Department, many other athletic opportunities are also available to all students. For families looking to relocate into Racine County – do your homework! You will find that the Yorkville School District is where you will want your children to attend school. Yorkville is centrally located in Racine County, and has several easy ways to access Interstate 94 – making easy commutes to Kenosha, Racine and Milwaukee.
