France’s historical museum, Le Musee du Louvre, the world’s premier shrine to art and home to priceless works like the Mona Lisa, has announced it will open a new Louvre in Abu Dhabi. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is a joint thirty-year cultural agreement between Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the French government. The 24,0000 square metre branch of the famous Paris museum, designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, is expected to be open in 2012 as part of Saadiyat Island’s Culture District project. The Louvre Abu Dubai is about to

become one of the world’s premier art galleries. The purpose of Abu Dhabi’s cultural programme is to introduce people to both art and the ideas of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, as an exciting new universal museum created in Abu Dubai. The Pritzker Prize- winning architect Jean Nouvel, who designed it stated: ‘ This building belongs to this site.’ The new Louvre will be inspiring, showcasing high quality artwork from all over the world but not merely recreating the Louvre in Paris. One of the main focus points of the museum project is said to be bridging the distance between Eastern and Western art pieces, which will create

The final cost of the construction is expected to be between €83 million and €108 million. The opening of the museum is also one of the most eagerly awaited projects of the city of Abu Dhabi, and it is also expected to raise the tourism bar of Abu Dhabi and aid in the evolution of the city into a global centre of arts and culture. The design of the Louvre Abu Dubai makes it look as though it floats on water, the complex taking its inspiration from traditional Arabian city. Standing on piles founded on a bedrock 18m

deep, its imposing form will be topped by a 180m-diameter cupola supported on five perimeter pillars. In his design statement, Nouvel said “ The museum is conceived as a complex of pavilions, plazas, alleyways and canals, evoking the image of a city floating on the sea. Hovering over the complex will be a form inspired by traditional Arabic architecture.” When completed in 2013, the 24,000-sqm Louvre Abu Dhabi will have 6,000 sq metres of galleries devoted to a comprehensive permanent display Article Layout Design

of archaeology, fine and decorative arts, and 2,000 sq metres for temporary exhibitions. The Louvre Abu Dhabi will be present major artifacts and works of archaeology, the fine arts and decorative arts from all historical periods, with works drawn from the Louvre Paris and other French museums and from its own permanent collection.
