My Favorite Southern Cookbooks: Their Tales and Their Treasures
*Special event, special woman, special food! Don’t miss Nathalie’s Macon appearance!
A native of a small town in South Georgia, Gena Knox’s foray into the kitchen came at a young age. Her chores included helping her mom with the family’s meals, and as she got older she began to experiment and learn how to put her stamp on traditional meals. Influenced by her mom’s love of cooking, the abundance of fresh produce from the garden and the fact that all good meals in her area were home-cooked, Gena embraced all things food and was set on her culinary path. That path has led Gena to author her newest cookbook, Southern My Way: Simple Recipes, Fresh Flavors, a compilation of recipes for traditional Southern dishes that have been updated with a lighter, healthier approach and focus on the use of local ingredients. This cookbook is a follow-up to her first cookbook, Gourmet Made Simple. In 2003, Gena and her husband Davis founded Fire & Flavor (headquartered in Athens, Ga.), which offers grilling planks, grilling papers, skewers, rubs and brines.
Carol Dodd Porter has a BA in psychology from the University of Georgia. She writes the Cookbook Farm column for The Telegraph and hosts a cooking show bi-weekly for TV35 WDIG in Dublin. She has served on the board of the Dublin-Laurens Chamber of Commerce and has been general manager of nine newspapers for the Porter-Lovett owned Courier Herald Publishing Company. She was a 2010 nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia. Her four sons are active members of First United Methodist Church, where Carol has served on the administrative board, the worship committee, as director of the Bible school and taught the Second Door Adult Bible Class. She served as leader of Katie Dudley Cub Scout Troop for at-risk children and helped establish the local Boys and Girls Club. She is past president of the Georgia Citizens for the Arts and has established an endowment for the arts at Middle Georgia College. She has a one-woman show this September for the Macon Arts Alliance.
Nathalie Dupree is the author of 10 cookbooks, selling over half a million copies, and host of more than 300 national and international cooking shows, which have aired since 1986 on PBS, the Food Network, and the Learning Channel. She has appeared on the Today Show and Good Morning America. Nathalie has won wide recognition for her work, including two James Beard Awards. She is best known for her approachability and her understanding of Southern cooking, having started the New Southern Cooking movement now found in many restaurants throughout the United States. She has been chef of three restaurants in Majorca, Spain, Georgia and Virginia. For 10 years she directed the Rich’s Cooking School in Atlanta, where she stopped counting at 10,000 students. Many of them now own restaurants, catering or other food businesses, edit magazines, have their own television shows and have written their own cookbooks. Her most recent cookbook is Southern Biscuits, written with Cynthia Graubart. *Special event, details TBA. Location, times and admission cost for special events vary from regular Salons.
