Hello! This is the first ever issue of Make Do & Mend, how exciting! We love vintage and upcycling and we hope you do too. So for this first issue be prepared to learn how to make the perfect Wimbledon cake, try some home made jam, go for a long bicycle ride in the country and turn that charity shop dress into a catwalk beauty! Learn how to set up your very own craft shop from the comfort of your own home on page 14, where we interviewed the winner of our very first Business of the Month competition. Although a stronger alternative to the usual summer Pimm’s, the Bakewell Beauty is still easy to drink and Ingredients: very refreshing. But you 20ml of Black Sambuca will need s sweet tooth! 25 ml of Amaretto Get in touch to show us 25 ml of strawberry your results! Liqueur 50 ml of Double Add all of the ingredients, Cream except the cream and shake over ice. Strain into the cream on top. For a special touch, and a sprinkling of chocolate powder and a fresh strawberry. And then sit back and enjoy!

Baking
I’m aching for some baking! Quick and easy jam 1. Place all of the fruit and sugar into a saucepan on a very low heat, stirring occasionally. Be sure to sugar rather than melt it.
2. When all the sugar has fully dissolved, bring to a rapid, rolling boil, so that the bubbles wont be calmed by stirring. Cook for 3 - 5 minutes.
3. The jam has reached setting point once it has thickened and boils more slowly. You can test that it’s at setting point by spooning a little onto a cool surface, if it wrinkles when touched then you know it is ready.
4. Once your jam has reached setting point, spoon into sterilised jars, and your home made jam is ready!

Ingredients: 500g of sugar 500g of fresh fruit

Time for tea Wimbledon cake Ingredients 300g Self Raising Flour 2 teaspoons Baking Powder 150g Caster Sugar 6 Eggs 6 tablespoons Natural Yogurt Strawberry Jam to fill Strawberries to decorate
3. Pour the mixture into two lined and buttered sandwich tins. Bake in a pre heated teen to twenty minutes. Once baked turn onto a cooling rack. 4. Spread the underside of the sponge with strawberry jam. Then spread half of the cream over it.
6. Take the strawberries cut them in half and decorate on the top. For a video tutorial check out our website!
5. Put the other sponge on top and cover in the rest of the cream.
1. Beat the sugar, yogurt and eggs in an electric mixer for around 10 minutes. 2. Once the mixture is almost white in colour eight until there are no lumps.

I decided to buy my own sewing machine to make the changes I was making to garments more professional. So I moved on to sewing hems and taking in waistlines. You really can create whatever you want to with a little practice. “One of my favourite things at the moment is my studding machine. Every charity shop has loads of shirts, I’ve that look great with thick tights or a pair of disco pants. And with the studding machine, in seconds I can add a few studs to the corner of the collar, and instantly it looks like it could of come out of Urban

So Rachel, how did you get started with your online store? “I started when I made my friend a bunting banner, I was trying to think of nice things to make her that you can’t

and bunting? “I started making more presents for people. I made the cuddly bunnies as a present for a friend and everyone was like “they’re really cool” so I thought if people think its cool then I’ll put it on my website. I then made a plate for my boyfriend for his Christmas present a
couple of years ago and people liked it so I started making them for my house and people always commented on them. I kind of decide what to put in my shop by gaging peoples reactions, but now whenever I make something for a friend or for home I always just make extra and put them on the site.”
Who or what inspired you with your cute designs? “I spend a lot of time looking at blogs online, I like blogs where people are crafty or interior designers or like pretty food or people who take photographs of everything they do! I’m a really visual person, I’m constantly scrolling through blogs. I also love typography so when creating my banners I spent a lot of time looking through vintage circus posters on websites. I love it when people use a lot of photoshop typography on their blogs. Little things like that tweak the inspiration in me. Most of my drawings come from little doodles. I have a sketchbook I take everywhere and my bag is always full to the brim with pens so if I’m bored I’ll just doodle and then it will sometimes turn into something nice.” “I don’t have just one person who inspires me but other Etsy designers are nice to look at. I would never copy someone, I think that would be wrong but I do draw inspiration from colours people are using and things like that. At the moment macaroon/pastel colours are in and thats what inspired me to do my business cards in the colours I did them in. Those pastels are quite nice for my up and coming baby range, I think I will do a set of baby plates with a minty green.” What plans has OHNORACHIO! got in the pipeline? “Well I’m working with a few galleries at the moment, one gallery in Liverpool is called Nook and Cranny and they are
