Indie Lobby Rendering

01

The grand lobby at Indie utilizes a more open floor plan to allow for traffic flow to and from the restaurant , bar, and retail space. A mirrored column encompassed by a black velvet lounge makes a grand statement in the center of the lobby. The design of this column was inspired by the crowd erupting at the beginning of a live concert. The gold elevator doors are costumed designed with a colorful pattern that mimics a sound wave that carries the guest to and from each level of Indie. Another interesting design feature of Indie is a 3 form wall filled with crackling gold leaf. The design of this wall is meant to mimic shattering glass caused by the vibrations of high pitch sound.

CHALLENGE: Develop a cohesive design of a boutique hotel in the downtown location of your choice. The 18 level building includes a lobby, guest rooms, restaurant, bar, and rooftop bar and grill. Each space is also branded to reflect its design.

CONCEPT:

Indie is a boutique hotel in Austin, TX, located downtown on West 6th Street, the heart of their music district. The design of Indie is inspired by independent music and the artists that help keep music alive. Independent music is produced separately from major record labels, and the artists are not defined by a single style or genre of music. Independent music offers more freedom. Major labels often look to these smaller labels to stay current in the rapidly changing music scene. The design of Indie is inspired by the rebellious freedom of Music today. Indie’s eclectic design welcomes all that visit. The saturated colors and lush textures mix with rich metallics creating an energetic and luxurious environment. A mirrored column feature in the middle of the main lobby offers interesting reflections of the surrounding design elements. The intriguing views created by the column spark a sense of exploration, which is perfect because indie offers a number of music inspired amenities. The Guest can choose between dining at The Venue or G10 Rooftop Bar and Grill, or enjoy a cocktail at Off-Key Piano Bar. The Guest can also visit Soul Seller records for great current and vintage music finds.

SOLUTION:

The team designed a boutique hotel in Austin, Texas. The music inspired design in conjunction with the lively city attracts guest of all kinds. Indie is designed so that guest have a new experience with each space they enter.

CONCEPT: The Venue restaurant is located the left of the entrance on the main floor. The design of The Venue is inspired by a more mellow, acoustical genre of music. Metal ceiling tiles feature organic cut outs that mimic the movement of sound. Low lighting and rich colors mixed with dark floors and ceilings create a more intimate environment. The venue features nightly live acoustical music that is performed by various local artists to provide both entertainment and fine dining.

Off Key Piano bar is a lively attraction located on the main floor of Indie. The attention is easily drawn to the center of the room where a piano sits surrounded by chairs filled with excited guests. The bar’s eccentric design provides a fun and laid back atmosphere that allows one to wind down at the end of the day.

CONCEPT: The back hallway of Indie houses Soul Seller Records. Soul Seller Records is easily located through signage in the main lobby. The design is inspired by the unpredictable sound that is heard when listening to a vinyl record on a turntable. Vinyl records unique sound is attributed to the pops and crackles of surface noise cause by dust and other natural defects. The ceiling deigns of soul sellar records was inspired by the spinning of a record on a turn table. The wall covering features an interesting texture much like the grooves of a record. Natural wood and metallic allows modern to mix with vintage, which is perfect because soul sellar has the best selection of current and music from the past.

The design of the guestrooms at Indie are inspired by the movement of music. A metallic gold light feature with linear cut-outs along the ceiling and walls is inspired by the neck of A guitar. The custom wallcovering behind the guest bed is inspired by the vibration of the guitar strings and the movement of sound away from them. The carpet featured in the room also mimics this same movement. The contrasting color scheme used in the guest room is inspired by the various colors of flashing lights used at music festivals and the metallics are taken from the instrument and equipment used by the performers. Some of these music themed rooms offer a view of 6th street, which is the leading live music district in Austin, and Other rooms provide a view of the Colorado river. The Indie allows the guest to choose the view that will provide the best experience for that individual.

G10 is the rooftop bar and grill located on the 18th floor of Indie. G10, in musical terms, is the highest note that has ever been achieved by a person. G10 is a high end restaurant and bar that offers live music, dancing, a bar, lounge, and full service restaurant. The design is inspired by the intense sound that is experienced when such high notes are heard. G10 opens into a grand bar that is covered in a lighted canopy, The canopy allows the bar to have a more intimate environment. a variety of seating option allows the guest to choose their experience at G10. Reflecting pools with neon floating lights meet a grand stage in the center of the rooftop. The water in the reflecting pool picks up the sound vibrations allowing the guest to visualize the effect sound has on the environment. CHALLENGE:

Develop a functional retail space with a cohesive design for Mississippi State University's MAFES Sales Store. Students should develop a redesign of the existing space after meeting with the client. Students will work dynamically in teams, and develop a design to meet the clients needs.

CONCEPT:

Slice is defined as a cut, portion, or share of an item. The MAFES Sales Store sits in the heart of Mississippi State University’s Starkville campus and serves as a hub for the entire community. The most recent word used to describe MSU’s students, staff, and fan base is “family”. The MAFES Sales Store encourages the urge to slice, or in other words, share the love and passion for MSU cheese, jellies, and sauces with the people you care about most. A combination of rustic materials and geometric lines echo the act of sharing while also representing the rich history of the store. Years ago, only nine Edam cheese balls were manufactured a day, and today MAFES produces over four hundred. With a ever increasing amount of products being made, open shelves provide adequate storage while also encouraging guests to interact. A faceted wooden ceiling detail imitates the idea of sliced cheese while providing acoustical barriers over the cash wrap and throughout the main sales floor. Easy navigation is carried out by linear lines that circulate guests throughout the store bringing them back to the cash wrap at the end of their visit. No matter which way you slice it, the MAFES Sales Store is the perfect selection for your tailgating needs.

SOLUTION:

The team designed a retail space that uses geometric lines along with a rich texture and shape that mimics the slicing and sharing of cheese. Although the design is mainly modern, the history of the store is seen throughout. The geometric lines and linear details both welcome and guide the guest.

CHALLENGE:

Develop the design for a local microbrewery that is true to the culture of both Starkville and the company. The interdisciplinary design team consists of students from interior design, architecture, building construction science, and graphic design. The team must use their skills to develop a functional and cohesive design.

CONCEPT:

Sweetgum Brewing company is a local microbrewery located in the heart of Starkville, MS. The design of Sweetgum is inspired by the brewing process. The use of reclaimed lumber on the facade of the building and throughout the interior space is much like the raw ingredients used at the beginning of the brewing process. The recessed entry into Sweetgum opens into a lobby that utilizes a drop ceiling, low lighting, and warm materials to greet the consumer. The dropped ceiling continues and linear lighting is added to guide the consumer through the tour, these design details are meant to add a sense of intimacy, which is inspired by the attention to detail used to obtain the perfect flavor of beer. As the consumer travels through the brewery light gradually increases guiding the consumer to the tasting room. The tasting room, also known as The Sip, utilizes natural lighting and a lighter materials and finishes to encourage social interaction. Frosted glass is used to contrast the dark flooring, this mimics the separation of the heaviness of the beer in the bottom and the light foam that sits on top. The overall design is meant to guide the consumer throughout the building beginning with intimate spaces and concluding with a more relaxed, social environment.

SOLUTION:

The overall design mimicked the different stages of the brewing process that Sweetgum uses to create their Standby Red Ale. The overall design of the space uses the concept of going from dark to light to guide the user through the space. The design team worked together to develop branding, both exterior and interior design, resolve structural issues, and the budget that goes along with these.

The design of the reception and lobby of the next office building is inspired by high energy. The custom wall covering behind the reception desk represents the flow of energy and how it changes from one form to the other. The custom floor pattern guides the guest through the space. The curvilinear line that mirrors the custom reception desk design guides the guest to the ideation room where the newest products and technology can be found. The linear lines in the carpet tile guide the guest down the hallway to the forum classroom.

NE T

CHALLENGE:

Create a coworking environment using research based design that meets the program objectives provided by the Steelcase Next Competition. This coworking environment should have spaces that are technologically advanced, change with the future of technology, evoke a sense of community, and integrate Steelcase office products.

CONCEPT: Energy in its simplest form is the ability to do work, but it is so much more than that. Energy comes in many forms and is constantly being transferred from one object to another. Energy is everywhere one looks. Although it moves too fast to be seen by the human eye, the effects energy has is very evident. Next is not just an office building, but a dynamic workplace being shared by a diverse group of people. The design of Next is inspired by energy’s constant transformation. As clients move through Next, they are constantly experiencing new spaces with different energy levels. Upon entering Next, the reception area uses saturated colors and interesting textures to encourage high energy. Linear elements move you through the space to the Ideation room, where creativity is encouraged with interactive product displays and a collaborative meeting area. The forum classroom and open office use flexible furniture to encourage collaboration or individual focus. The work café uses an array of settings to encourage different interaction. Lower energy areas are spaces that are for individual focus, such as, private enclaves and offices. These spaces uses calmer colors and softer textures to help relax and focus the user. The Next office allows for people to constantly change their work setting, and find inspiration from both their surroundings and those they come in contact with. NEXT allows the user to find their energy.

SOLUTION: The design of this space is inspired by energy. Energy is always changing, and that is why the design of the space is so versatile. Coworkers are able to easily move from one space to the next with the guidance of linear elements. The spaces vary from areas of low energy, that are used for quiet time, to areas of high energy, that are used for collaboration.

DERMATOLOGY

DERMATOLOGY SPA

The goal of this project is to design a dermatology office and medi-spa. Students have the choice to combine the spaces or keep them separate. The students will visit a similar facility and meet with a professional dermatologist as part of the research for this project. The goal of this project is to create a functioning clinic with durable, easy-to-clean finishes that is still aesthetically pleasing. Students should also focus on way-finding, room sizes, equipment needed, and other requirements needed for a functioning healthcare environment.

CONCEPT: Seven is a dermatology clinic and day spa located in Napa Valley, California. The name Seven is derived from onyx, a natural stone. Onyx has a hardness of seven. It is a beautiful but strong stone much like the human skin. Onyx is also said to have both physical and mental healing properties. Onyx is known for lowering stress levels, and alleviating worries. Onyx is also known for helping people feel comfortable in their own skin, as well as, their environments. Seven is designed to mimic the beauty and form of onyx. The texture found throughout the spa and dermatology office is much like that found within the natural stone. The color palette is predominantly warm to give the patient of since of warmth and comfort during their experience at Seven. The overall design of Seven is based on the beauty found in the curves, color, and form of onyx.

SOLUTION:

Seven dermatology and medi-spa offers skin treatments for both medical and luxury purposes. The guest enter into a grand lobby with that is rich in texture, from there guest either enter the medi-spa or the dermatology clinic. Both spa and dermatology clinic have rounded corridors to ensure guest do not get lost. These corridors will always bring the guest back to where they started. Employees offices are also separated from guest rooms to ensure privacy. The warm color palette mixed with rich textures evoke warmth and relaxation.
