SELF PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG MAN Sir Roy Strong talks about his new memoire
For nearly half a century, Sir Roy Strong has enjoyed a high public profile in the arts world in Britain and is, without doubt, one of the most celebrated visionaries of our time. Yet remarkably little is known about his life before the Swinging Sixties when he burst upon the scene, aged thirty-one, as the revolutionary trendy young Director of the National Portrait Gallery. In this book, he recounts, for the first time, the story of his social origins and the roots of his life-long passion for the culture and history of England. Self-Portrait of a Young Man explores his childhood influences, his early encounters with theatre and opera and his sometimes turbulent family relationships. date: Tuesday 16th April venue: Topping & Company time: 7.45pm for 8.00pm tickets: £6 in advance, redeemable against book purchase booking: 01225 428111 or toppingbooks.co.uk

TALKS JULIE VERHOEVEN IN CONVERSATION WITH IAIN R WEBB
KAFFE FASSETT – QUILTS SHOTS AND STRIPES
“A certain camp relish on the power of pop culture and a spirit that owes a lot to British culture or punk” is how artist and designer, Julie Verhoeven has been described.
Textiles maestro Kaffe Fassett will be descending on Topping's bookshop in a whirlwind of colour for this special talk. His thoughtful and intricate creations take in far-flung influences, from Pakistani kanthas and suzanis from the Caucasus to Amish quilts. The designs in his new book, Shots and Stripes, are as bold and beautiful as ever, but less complex and time-consuming so more accessible to the lay quilter.
Within her work, one often encounters startling or even confrontational images of femininity that could be read as post-feminist. Verhoeven has collaborated internationally with labels including Louis Vuitton, Versace, Mulberry, H&M and M.A.C. Iain R Webb is an award winning writer (The Times, Vogue, Harpers and Queen, Elle) and Professor of Fashion at Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins. This talk coincides with the ‘Ladies, Let's Rip!’ installation at the Holburne and presents a rare opportunity to gain an insight into the world and work of Julie Verhoeven. date: Thursday 18 April venue: The Holburne Museum Cafe, Bath time: 7.30pm tickets: £10/£8 booking: 01225 388569

EXHIBITIONS
MOUVEMENTS DE FEMMES BY NORMAN PARKINSON, CURATED BY ROLAND MOURET
MADE IN ENGLAND!
Marking the Centenary of Norman Parkinson’s birth – An Exhibition curated by Roland Mouret
“There is no greater added value today than being British-made quality.”
“I find the thing that excites me most about women is the way they move.” – norman parkinson, 1984
Celebrating the craft and heritage of British manufacturing, British Bagmakers are creating a pop-up workshop in the centre of Bath and will reveal exactly what goes into making the fabulous designer handbags that have become the must-have accessory.
The stiff formality of portrait and fashion photography was swept away by Norman Parkinson (1913-1990) who, as one of the twentieth century’s best known and most prolific British fashion photographers, injected an easy and casual elegance into his images. His photographs of celebrities, artists, actors and the British Royal Family are known throughout the world and have become icons of style.
Fashion celebrities including milliner, Stephen Jones; interiors expert, Nina Campbell; super model, Jade Parfitt; fashion writer, Iain R Webb; gold medal winner, Amy Williams will each be invited to design a bag which will be made as one-of-a-kind during the week. The bags will be auctioned at a special charity lunch. British Bagmakers will also produce a limited edition souvenir Bath in Fashion bag for fashion-followers who have an eye for a British bag.
This special exhibition is curated by fashion designer Roland Mouret. He has defined the era of the iconic dress – the Galaxy, Titanium, Moon – and has the reputation as a magician, master of structure and silhouette and as a man with an intuitive understanding of the female form.

‘Ladies, Let's Rip!’
An installation by Julie Verhoeven Sponsored by Bath Spa University “At the Holburne, I am not only attracted by the excesses and obsessive nature of the collection, but also by the overtly staged, grandiose portraiture in the picture gallery. In my installation I hope to highlight the same heightened sense of performance, vanity in dress and exuberance but with humour and spirit. Tailors dummies, shop mannequins, living statues and all modes of display. Ladies, Let’s Rip!” – julie verhoeven Bringing together references as diverse as Barry Lyndon, Lene Lovich and living statues, as well as costume drama and tea cosies, artist and designer, Julie Verhoeven, has created a specially commissioned installation for Bath In Fashion entitled, ‘Ladies, Let’s Rip!’ This artwork, at The Holburne Museum, will patchwork together the historical and the everyday, painterly and punk rock, featuring fantastical figures – a new take on the classical Gainsborough Portraits that were themselves the Georgian version of celebrity culture. Her work is multi-disciplined across art and fashion and is famous for its exquisitely avant-garde quality and surreal composition. She has collaborated with some of the biggest names in fashion, including Louis Vuitton, John Galliano, Versace, Loewe, Mulberry and Topshop.

THE CELEBRITY IT BAG AUCTION AND LUNCH
in aid of The Forever Friends Appeal’s Cancer Care Campaign
‘She didn’t merely enter a room, she exhilarated it’, wrote Nicholas Haslam of Diana Vreeland, one of the 20th Century’s most influential women of fashion. Amanda Mackenzie Stuart, who has written the first full-length biography of Diana Vreeland, brings to life this dynamic woman, a force majeure who inspired loyalty and admiration and aroused fear and criticism. After joining Harpers, Vreeland’s brilliant ideas transformed its fashion pages for the next two decades. She later moved to Vogue and, under her watch, the magazine showcased fashion and art, high and low culture, creativity and rampant materialism. Amanda Mackenzie Stuart contends that Vreeland’s dream was for women to become the ‘best’ version of themselves, and took the view that anyone could ‘curate’ their own lives. “Editing is not just in magazines. I consider that editing should be in everything – thoughts, friendships, life”. date: Friday 19th April venue: The Allium Brasserie at The Abbey Hotel, Bath time: 12.00 for 12.30pm tickets: £32, includes two-course lunch and a glass of wine booking: bathinfashion.co.uk or 0844 847 5256 Book signing with Topping & Co.
