bined with peace and tranquillity is probably the main reason so many are captivated by Senja. When you discover an isolated white sandy beach or are admiring the majestic view from a mountain peak, there is space to think big and enjoy the moment. In this guide, we wish to share some of what you can experience in the Senja region to enable you to plan your trip in the quiet of your own home. However, if you have already arrived in Senja, we hope this guide will provide you with useful information and inspiration to explore the island and surrounding area. It’s important for us that as a guest in the Senja region, you feel welcome here and have an unforgettable stay. Protecting the nature is a top priority, so you will notice increasingly more public toilets, waste containers and emptying stations for caravans/campers along the roads. We hope that
everything you take into the countryside with you, you either take home with you or put in the nearest waste container. In this way, everyone can have the joy of experiencing these magical surroundings. New products and services for tourists and other visitors to Senja are constantly being developed, so you won’t find details about everything in the guide you are now holding. Feel free to check our website www. visitsenja.no or visit us at the tourist information office/head office in Finnsnes. If you have a tourism-related question, you can also send us an e-mail at post@visitsenja.no. Welcome to Senja! We hope you will head home with life-long memories. Kindest regards Dan Bjørk Head of Tourism

Experience the North Norwegian coastal environment at its best at Kaikanten in Gryllefjord! You can relax in one of our modern seaside holiday houses, go on a deep-sea fishing trip or fish in an idyllic mountain lake. The islands and coves round Gryllefjord are well worth exploring. We recommend stopping at a secluded beach with a picnic basket in hand. A ferry service operates between Gryllefjord and Andenes during the summer months and, if you are lucky, you will spot whales during the ferry crossing. Kaikanten is just a stone’s throw from the Gryllefjord ferry landing.

Great adventures on Senja With the possibilities for outdoor adventures on Senja endless, it can be a bit daunting to choose between all of them. To make things a little easier, we have highlighted five unforgettable adventures for your Senja visit. Segla
There is a good chance you have spotted some pictures of this iconic mountain on Instagram within the last year. Just as the more famous Trolltunga in Western Norway became very popular on Instagram, equally fantastic photos of Segla are now circulating.
1
Amazingly, hiking this mountain is not very hard and delivers breathtaking views of Senja. The hike up to Segla starts by Fjordgård on the northwestern end of Senja. There is a free parking lot by Fjordgård school and the trail is clearly marked all the way up. From the top you can enjoy the view over Mefjorden, Øyfjorden and all the surrounding majestic mountain peaks. Most of the pictures of Segla are actually taken from Hesten, a neighboring mountain. Hesten can also be reached from Fjordgård.
Husfjellet
Stunning scenery, a variety of terrain, an exciting yet manageable hike – Husfjell has it all! If you want a nice hike that is relatively safe, but where you still get amazing views, this could be the trip for you.
2
Husfjell is located on the western end of Senja island, right by Skaland. You can park in the parking lot by the church. The trailhead can be found at the back of the picnic area. When you arrive at the top of the peak, you can also climb to several other nearby peaks to find more impressive panoramas. At the top of Husfjell, you will see there are a few sheer cliffs close by as well as amazing views of Ersfjorden, Steinfjorden, and Okshornan.
Ånderdalen Nasjonalpark
This national park was created in 1970 to protect this primarily pine forested area and the mountains right along the Atlantic Ocean. Many of the trees in this 125 square kilometer area are more than 600 years old.
3

There are several trails in the national park which take you across the entire park from south to north. A good starting point is Tranøybotn Camping. Follow the trail from there to Ånderdalsvatnet (Ånderdal Lake) to enter the national park. On your hike to Ånderdalsvatnet, you will find untouched nature including pine forests that transition into birch forest, and marshes. Upon arriving at the lake, fish for trout, but make sure you organize a fishing license before the trip. The trail is rather flat and is suitable for all ages. There are marshy areas, so wear waterproof boots to keep your feet dry. If you have the time, make this an overnight trip, as there are several nice picnic areas with bonfire pits.
Lonketind
There are a lot of impressive peaks on Senja which are hard to hike but provide views that are well worth the effort. Lonketind is a little different: it is not a very difficult climb, but it still gives you the amazing views of Senja and the surrounding Atlantic Ocean.
Lonketind, 848 meters above sea level, is situated on the very southwest end of the Senja island, close to Stonglandseidet. The hike up to the top is easy with a well-defined trail and is never very steep.
5
Tungeneset/Eidfjord
On Senja you are spoilt with spectacular views wherever you look, so you don’t necessarily have to climb high up on a mountaintop to get a thrilling experience. Tungeneset and Ersfjord are two easy options for great views and they are very close to each other so make sure to visit them both. Tungeneset brings viewpoints and picnic areas to the next level, with its Nordic design structure nestled between the Steinfjord and the Ersfjord. From this walkway constructed with Siberian larch wood, you will enjoy views of the North Sea in the west, and the intense Okshornan mountain range, also known as Devil’s Jaw, in the north. Idyllic Ersfjord Beach is surrounded by beautiful, splendid mountains and waves crashing on the white sandy beach, perfect for some relaxation.
6
Whether you want to camp overnight next to the beach, eat a nice lunch at one of the many picnic tables, enjoy an evening by the fire under the midnight sun, or sit in awe surrounded by the northern lights, this is the place to go. Tungeneset and Ersfjord are situated along the road between Skaland and Senjahopen.

Ånderdalen National Park Ånderdalen National Park is one of Norway´s smallest national parks. Located in the south of Senja, the national park is the North-Norwegian countryside in miniature. It features rivers and lakes, jagged peaks, plateaus and untouched birch and pine forests. FACTS
2
Ånderdalen National Park is located in the municipalities of Tranøy and Torsken It was established in 1970 and after twice being enlarged now covers an area of 125 km². Around 90 nesting bird species have been recorded in the national park. The area that is now Ånderdalen National Park has been an important area for humans right back to the Stone Age. Many cultural relics have been discovered in the park, the oldest of which are in the western part near the sea.
ATTRACTIONS:
Alpine coastal scenery Varied wildlife
Old pine forest Cultural relics Lake Åndervatnet
ACCOMMODATION:
The gamme (turf hut) Åndergammen and hut on the shores of Lake Åndervatnet are the only open cabins in the national park. SCENIC ROUTE
SENJA Norwegian Scenic Route Senja runs from Gryllefjord to Botnhamn, with short detours to Mefjordvær and Husøy. The drive along the outer coast of Senja is a journey through a constantly changing landscape. The steep mountains plunging deep into the ocean are a breathtaking sight and the most prominent feature of this stretch. The road is narrow here and there as it twists and turns along fjords with crystal clear, icy-cold waters. So cold that no matter how inviting the beaches with their pure white coral sand appear, going for a swim is only for the hardiest among us. At Bergsbotn you will find a viewing platform that lifts you above the magnificent surroundings, allowing you to look out over Bergsfjorden to the ocean in the background. The drive continues in a dramatic landscape on a road which is occasionally quite narrow and winding, and you will find tiny fishing villages and houses clinging to the most surprising spots. Senja reflects the robustness and hardship of a time when people had to survive on fishing and agriculture that yielded little, but the island also reveals a less harsh side with its sheltered fjord inlets. And above all, it is so beautiful that you will wonder why you haven’t found your way here before. nasjonaleturistveger.no

2
Ersfjordstranda beach lies in the inner reaches of the Ersfjord and offers white, fine-grained sand that brings other countries and beaches to mind. Surrounded by tall, craggy peaks, this is Norway at its most spectacular. The triangular, gold-plated service-facility on the beach is an attraction in its own right. Photo: Elizabeth Müller

In the middle of the Øyfjord in the north lies the incredible Husøy island, a tiny islet which is home to Senja´s most active fishing community and a few hundred permanent inhabitants. The oldest houses have been stayed with wires to withstand the fierce winds. Photo: Trine Kanter Zerwekh / Statens vegvesen

Activities and experiences in Senja during that time include: THE COLOURFUL WINTER WEEKS The Polar Night in the Senja region lasts from 20 November to 20. During this time, the sun does not rise above the horizon. In the weeks before the sun disappears, the fantastic skyscapes are filled with all sorts of colours. During this colourful time in November just before the sun bids farewell, it’s important to get your camera ready! THE NORTHERN LIGHTS From October to late March, the chances are high that you will see
a lot of Northern Lights activity, sometimes small teasing glimpses as stripes on the night sky while other times it looks like the whole world has turned green and the sky has started to dance. For the best possible Northern Lights experience, it’s important to get well away from the bright city lights. Consequently, the clear, pure air and large wilderness areas without street lighting make the Senja region a perfect place for the optimal aurora show. Some activity providers in the Visit Senja Region can take you to the best spots based on the latest weather and Northern Lights forecasts.

cross-country ski trails in the region. A leisurely ski trip with the family on a Sunday, complete with a packed lunch and a thermos of hot chocolate, always proves to be time well spent.

The sea for busin The sea plays a major and important role in the everyday life of the people in the Senja region. Naturally enough, the dominant industries in Senja are fisheries and aquaculture, but the sea is also an arena for relaxing, recreation and exciting adventures. THE SEAFOOD REGION SENJA The Senja Seafood Cluster consists of 42 companies involved in seafood and seafood-related products. In 2016, seafood companies and classic marine suppliers in the Senja region had a joint turnover of products and services of more than NOK 7 billion. The six salmon farming companies
in Senja produce around 100,000 tonnes of salmon annually.
from a large European city: “It’s so easy to breathe out here”.
Around 160 fishing vessels are registered in Senja. Around 250,000 seafood meals are transported out of Husøy in Senja every day. Around 1,000 of the 7,500 jobs in Senja are in the seafood industry. The Senja Seafood Cluster aims to be a national leader in the sustainable production and export of seafood.
Quality time with good friends As the saying goes, the best experiences are the ones you share with others. In our hectic everyday life, there is generally not much time for memorable experiences and good conversations with good friends. One tip worth considering is assembling a group of friends and heading out to sea for a day, far removed from all obligations and interruptions. Go ashore on a deserted island and enjoy a delicious meal together in peace and tranquillity. Leave your mobile phones behind (but work out a way to take photos) so you are fully present the whole time. A few hours together in such surroundings will create memories that last for ever.
BALM FOR BODY AND SOUL “It’s so easy to breathe out here” It was a beautiful summer’s day on the Bergsfjord in Senja. The boat was surrounded by small islands, white sandy beaches and turquoise blue sea. It was completely silent apart from the sound of seagulls and lapping waves. The fresh, pure air filled our lungs and breathing was effortless. In the words of a man visiting
The sea as meditation When you need to be completely

ness and pleasure alone, sea kayaking is the perfect alternative. As you leave the shore and paddle out to sea, it is highly likely you will feel a sense of calm enter your body. It’s just you and the sea. Nothing else matters. Being a small person in the big, open sea is a powerful experience. Don’t be surprised if you want to do it again – and again. Fishing The most authentic coastal experience imaginable in Senja is jumping onto a fishing boat and heading out to sea in search of the truly big fish. If you want to rent a fishing boat for a day or stay at a fishing camp for several days, the Senja region is the place for you. For more sea-based experiences, please visit: www.visitsenja.no

Key seafood companies are spread throughout Senja, but most are located in North-Senja (from Lysbotn to Mefjorden) and on the Outer coast (from Ersfjord to Flakstadvåg). The location of the companies is historic and has natural explanations, such as distance to the fishing grounds, harbour conditions and growth conditions for aquaculture. However, it may also be attributed to other factors, such as local ownership and public infrastructure. Produced by Transportutvikling AS in 2016 on commission for Sjømatklyngen Senja.
