JENNY JONES RUGS
Art on the Floor
J
enny Jones has a well-earned reputation as one of the world’s most respected rug designers and has been recognised with a host of international rug design awards, including the prestigious Carpet Design Award. Every rug within the Jenny Jones collection is designed by Jenny and her inhouse team of professional designers. Handmade from commencement to completion [in the finest knotting with the highest grade handspun wool and silks,] each individual knot in these masterpieces is like a paint stroke. Like a piece of art the natural variations in each rug are a part of its beauty, desirability and individuality. A standard 2.4 x 3m rug can consist of anywhere between 800,000 and 1.7 million individual knots, depending on the knotting density. In 2012, Jenny won the Best Modern Design category at the Domotex International Rug Expo held in Hannover, Germany. The award was won for the ‘Ruby Room’ design, which is part of the Connextion collection. Jenny was again invited to Domotex in 2013, and was a finalist in the Best Modern Design category for her ‘Zanzibar’ design. A seemingly natural extension of Jenny’s philosophy of ‘Art on The Floor’ is the increasing use of Jenny’s rugs as wall hangings. Like contemporary tapestries the rugs take on a new life form, creating magnificent pieces of art that are striking in their proportions. This growing trend towards wall hangings gives designs like Jenny’s Wildflower Collection a second voice. Jenny’s designs are sold in Australia and throughout the world, including the US, Europe and Asia. The combination of colours, innovative design, and variable texture in Jenny’s rugs reflects her 20 years of experience designing for clients and gallery collections. These aspects along with resourceful experimentation of the design process allows Jenny to create compelling pieces of Art of the Floor.

about this book
A
rug is the foundation of any room and the connecting force that brings all the elements of the room together in harmony, your most important interior accessory. The right rug will call to you, like a piece of art, reflecting your personal taste and style so that everything else will naturally evolve upwards from the anchor point it provides. Use this book as a guide to the possiblities open to you and to help take you through the steps involved in choosing the right rug: •
Determining your size - choosing the correct size should always be the first step in choosing your rug and is crucial to the success of your room. (Please see size guide page 6)
•
Choosing your design - each of Jenny’s many collections are featured in this book but only a selection of each has been included. Please contact one of our design consultants if you would like to see more of a particular collection.
•
Picking your colours - the colour palate you choose should not only reflect the interior of your room but also your own personal style.

size guide
T
he first step towards choosing the perfect rug for your room is to determine the correct size. In modern open plan living rooms, the rug becomes the 5th wall, defining rooms within rooms. Size is vital.
•
Where the rug stops the room stops as your eye is naturally drawn to the first line. So the right size rug will visually stretch the space, and allow for all the elements of the room to be anchored together. If the furniture is completely on the rug this will unify the space and make the size seem generous. Diagram 4 is a great example of this.
•
When the rug is large enough for the furnishings to be at least partially on the rug, the room will feel more spacious and connected. Diagrams 2 and 3 are good examples of well sized living room rugs.
•
Try to avoid a rug that is too small for the space, this will draw your eye inwards and shrink the space making it appear smaller than it is. A smaller size rug often means that it sits within the furniture, as in Diagram 1, confining the room to that area and creating a feeling of disconnection.
•
In open plan homes the dining and living are usually part of one large area, so a rug provides the opportunity to clearly define these spaces. Choosing a rug for your dining area is straightforward - the rug needs to be in proportion to the table and allow for sufficient space to pull a chair out on each side and have the back legs still on the rug. 70cm is generally enough so if you add 140cm to the length and width of your table - you will know what rug size you need! Please see diagram 5 for an example of a correctly sized dining room rug.
•
Nothing makes a bedroom feel more luxurious and welcoming than a well chosen rug! The rug is best placed under the bed, framing the space and allowing for the soft rug underfoot at the sides of the bed. Diagrams 6 and 7 show some alternative size options with a standard double bed.
We have included some diagrams and examples of sizing and layouts so you can map out your space and determine the best size option for you. Standard Sizes available: 180 x 270cm (6 x 9 ft) 240 x 300cm (8 x 10 ft) 270 x 360cm (9 x 12 ft) 300 x 420cm (10 x 14 ft)

CRAFTSMANSHIP
Raw Materials: Craftsmanship begins with the materials. Only the finest quality silks and Tibetan or New Zealand wools are selected.
Dyeing: The raw materials are expertly hand dyed to match Jenny’s carefully chosen colour palette.
Spinning: Using centuries old techniques the wool and silk is then handspun creating a stronger fiber that keeps it’s natural lanolin.
Weaving: Only now can the weaving begin, with traditional artisans carefully knotting each individual knot by hand.
Washing: Once woven the rug is washed and dried in the sun, strengthening and cleaning the rug.
Finishing: Every rug gets finished by hand with fine details carved and pile heights created.
WILDFLOWERS COLLECTION This stunning collection is inspired by Australia’s unique flora. Designing this range was a true project of passion for Jenny, who wanted to share the raw beauty of the Australian bush. This collection links her love for Australian wildflowers with her passion for design. All of the rugs within the “Wildflowers” collection use the highest quality hand spun and dyed New Zealand or Tibetan wools and Chinese silk. Although ‘floral’ by nature, the sculptural forms and unique colours of Australian flora along with the organic compositions result in strong contemporary designs which evoke a sense of being surrounded by the breathtaking Australian bush.

CROCHET A result of Jenny’s time in Zimbabwe, this design draws on her great memories of the local women intricately crocheting and selling their works along the road sides. An abstracted representation of this art form, this design uses raised layers of silk over the background of reptile skin as well as subtle colour shifts to create a sumptuous work of art. A delicate and refined pattern this design manages to be freeform whilst still maintaining structure.

The initial inspiration for this design came about on one of Jenny’s trips to Lisbon, Portugal. On the trip, Jenny saw a big wall filled with metal postal tags, and was inspired by their notion of a physical history of travelling, and different experiences overseas. The layering of these postal tags onto a canvas, with some parts missing and some parts still visible, is an ode to the layering of history that occurs with travel.

JENNY JONES RUGS
giving back
Jenny and her husband Dennis have long been committed to giving back to the communities in Nepal and India. Their philosophy is one of creating respect for the weavers and although hand woven rugs are true works of art made by highly skilled artisans, weaving is still viewed as a low status job. Jenny Jones Rugs takes a hands on approach to the support it provides to these communities and not only offers financial assistance but has a very personal involvement with the programs it is associated with. The programs that Jenny Jones Rugs supports or has initiated are: Alternative Education Program (AEP)
Alternative Education Program (AEP)- There are currently over 350 million people who are illiterate in India. The great majority of these are women who were never given the opportunity to receive an education. This is a basic human right. The aim of the AEP is to introduce literacy, numeracy and life skills into selected rural villages in India. Weaving provides an economic back bone for these villages. Through the AEP the weavers receive a degree of financial and social empowerment. Through this ongoing series of programs over 2500 women have been educated.
Prison Fellowship Of Nepal (PFN)
In many lower socio economic countries such as Nepal when the mother goes to prison the children may have to go to prison with her. PFN organises extremal sponsorship for these children. Jenny Jones Rugs supports 35 of these children in safe houses and sponsored foster care, the sponsorship committment being for a minimum of 3 years for each child. Within these homes the children are well cared for, safe and have access to an education.
Nepal Small Business Revolving Fund
These loans are offered to women who are either ex-prisoners or single mothers. The aim is to empower the women with basic business skills and the ability to earn an income. The loan is repaid over a 3 year period and then advanced to another applicant.
All these programs are audited. If you would like more information on any of the above initiatives or would like to offer your support please do not hesitate to contact us at Jenny Jones Rugs.
