THE AMERICAN Less than 100 miles away from Los RIVIERA Angeles, Santa Barbara is a city on the central California coast, with the Santa Ynez Mountains as dramatic backdrop.
Downtown,
Mediterra-
nean-style white stucco buildings with red-tile roofs reflect the city’s Spanish colonial heritage. Lining State Street are upscale boutiques and restaurants offering local wines and seasonal fare. On a nearby hill, Mission Santa Barbara, founded in 1786, houses Franciscan friars and a small museum. On an average day, the 90,000 Santa Barbara residents can be found enjoying some of the nation’s best seafood, beaches, hiking, wine-tasting, kayaking, surfing, and golfing. Santa Barbara is often perceived as a rich, snobby city where the rich and famous go to relax; however, the average income is only slightly above the state average.

LETTERMARK
The final mark is representative of the beachy atmosphere of Santa Barbara. The loops of the “S” and “B” are reminiscent of waves. The “A” serif grounds the logo and gives it a since of sophistication related to the wealth in Santa Barbara.
W H IT N EY
Because the mark is a modern, serifed font with high contrast, the companion typeface is Whitney in both medium and light thickness. Whitney is a clean, humanist sans serif that contrasts the SBA mark well.

CO LOR PALET T E
The color palette was chosen from beach scenes around Santa Barbara. More than anything, Santa Barbara is nationally recognized as a beach town; therefore, this seemed like the most influential factor on which to base color.
