Design Project
GRADE FOUR MATHEMATICS LEARNING INTENTIONS: •Understand the use of standard units to measure perimeter, area and volume •Estimate and measure using standard units of measurement: perimeter, area and volume •Select appropriate tools and units of measurement •Use standard units of measurement to solve real-life situations involving perimeter, area and volume •Understand that 2D representations of 3D objects can be used to visualize and solve problems •Understand how scale is used to enlarge and reduce shapes •Use whole numbers up to thousands and beyond in real life situations •Select efficient method for solving a problem, for example mental estimation, mental of written strategies, or using a calculator •Use strategies to estimate the reasonableness of answers

You are an architect in a new community and have been asked by the mayor to design and construct a building that will become a landmark for your town.
Mathematical Strands: Shape and Space

Work through the design process to successfully complete your project. Design
Construct
In your math notebook experiment with different designs for your building. When you have finalized your design you will need to draw a floor plan that clearly shows the perimeter of your building. If you have more than one floor, you will need a separate drawing for each level. In order to assist the town council with the purchase of land space and carpet, please calculate the following: •The perimeter of your building •The area of each room
You may choose to build your structure either digitally, using Minecraft or concretely, using hands-on materials. Your building must be a ‘to scale’ version of your design.

Problem Solving Ms Jabalee
Once your building is complete, invite three friends to view your building. Ask them to help you solve the problems of decorating. Write these problems and post them on your website along with a photo of your design and completed building. Ask your friends to provide solutions in the comment section of your website. Reply to them and let them know if their calculations are accurate.

Possible Challenges • How much carpet do you need to purchase to cover the main floor? • What is the volume of air that will need to be cooled in the summer? • Which rooms will cost more to cool?
Success Criteria To be successful you will: •Use standard units of measurement in your design and challenge problems •Estimate as well as accurately measure and calculate the perimeter and volume of your building and the area of its floors •Construct a building that is to scale and matches your design
•Write problems for others to solve based on your design and construction •Provide accurate solutions to your problems and those of your classmates •Manage your time and complete the stages of the project when due
