DEMOCRACY

THE PROJECT

The image of a government building is the most powerful image a country can depict to establish its character in today’s world. These become landmarks in terms of scale and expression apart from serving a country’s functional requirements they also reflect the aspirations, ideals and image of a place/ city/ state/ country. The belief that a government building is the image of an amalgamation of the society, its history, technology and cultural identity of each individual of the society is not true. A government building does not really cater to the city level issue of a social interface between the administration and every individual. Neither does it cater to the immediate context and surroundings. The problem with the system in place is that these government buildings do not become part of the city and context since they are not places where a person would go without a purpose. Practically there is no dialogue between the common man and the building apart from them acting as a monument/ landmark in everyday life.

JUSTICE DELAYED IS JUSTICE DENIED Present state of judicial affairs and the overloading of court complexes has led to a situation where u might have to wait till eternity to get justice. To bring the balance to equilibrium we need to provide more court rooms or district complexes. The need to reinforce the Tis Hazari complex is nigh. The existing Infrastructure is good enough to build an extension as the surrounding is primarily single storeyed lawyers chambers. Negative spaces around the existing court complex can be redesigned to accommodate an extension and create artful meaningful spaces.

DESIGN The city level interface is given importance by responding to it axially also with the creation of a plaza. The extension responds to the metro as it is the new system of transport link to the city and the new image of public architecture and the people come from all over Delhi from this link. As time goes on people will start the metro as a link to come to this place hence the response.

The vision city incorporates a self sufficient neighborhood unit, which overlaps with commercial, and institutional, on the edges. The boundary of the city is not marked with an edge but a transition, with reclusive/secluded spaces as interstices within this transition.

This semester design studio was envisaged to comprehend the issues dealing with city planning for New Delhi. To be able to do this successfully, we needed to understand the patterns of growth of the city, and generate a vision for further development of the same. Specific to the city of Delhi and further zooming into the area of Qutub Mehrauli in the south of it, issues were analyzed and taken up at macro level of design. The overall vision was then superimposed with the various findings, and the thus the proposal was generated for the World Heritage Site in congruence with the localized urban setting.

FLUID URBAN SPACE the idea of breaking the notion of an edge continues, within the city, in the different types of uses. And thus, there forms an overlap at all the edges to become an interface, where the interaction occurs. this idea also brings about a new dimension to the usual bounded urban spaces, and thus forms the image of fluidity of these spaces on city level. The application of this idea into a tangible city model, could happen by creating a number of urban spaces and creating a number of networks within them, to re-inforce the idea of continuity, and connection.

5 Edges - the idea of fluidity, similar to free movement, is reflected in the edges. By creating soft edges to bring in the character of “flowing in for the two settlements and also by creating hard but permeable seams, which stitch yet not demarcate.

The city integration is valid at different levels - monument complex. - the urban villages. - the various city level functions.

The road demarcates the two settlements, and also reinforces the rigid edge of the complex. The Settlements on both the sides are densely built, and the area around Qutub Complex has dispersed built form into the greens.

Intervention of the edges is significant to the treatment of the areas around the monumentQutub Complex, as the idea of creating an isolated artefact out of historical precincts was to be dealt with in the design strategies adopted.

The condition of the various urban villages in bigger cities are usually neglected and isolated from the main focus of development, this brought a new significant aspect to the way the the urban scenario was dealt with. Thus, the functions at the outer most edges are not just serving the city, but attempting to give a platformto the locals to communicate and

The present conditions created by a site of historical significance, needed to be incorporated, but at the same time the idea of melting the edges was also a part of the vision for the city. Therefore the attempt in this scheme is to entice people by not the character fo boundedness, but introducing a new meaning to this space, by letting it open. This historical precinct, is not treated like an artifact or a museum piece, but the attempt is to create a balance between commodification and decommodification, as there may be strong forces to demanding both. The edges of the complex are permeable, and thus are treated like soft edges, envisioned as if merging into the growth of the city and not become an entity. The treatment of this area around a historical precinct, could be followed at the idea level, and thus will let the whole city grow, incorporating areas like these. The first step towards this direction would be to identify the seven cities, and the layers of history of Delhi. 5 6 7 8

CHOSEN AS EXHIBIT FOR ANNUAL ARCHITECTURAL EXHIBITION HELD AT TVBSHS

GANDHI MUSEUM, RAJGHAT India is a nation with more than a billion people. We have various different religions, languages, caste, creed, yet we belief in theories of pluralism, tolerance, self-reliance through the ages. Being the worlds largest democracy we still have conserved our tradition and culture and people around the world acknowledge and admire us for this.

CHINI VILLAGE, HIMACHAL PRADESH

UNITY IN DIVERSITY My attempt here was to create an architecture which brings people together. I tried to achieve spaces where people of all ages and classes can come and interact about Gandhian philosophy. these spaces are defined by the user group and the scale of the spaces are such that they become interactive and social where all feel as a mass working for each other.

Gandhi being a man of words can be described as a simple man with character whose values and beliefs like non-viloence,self reliance, swadeshi, truth and removal of untouchability are being recalled and respected. a simple man with complex thinking was the leader of the country towards independence. Looking at the purity and simplicity of the ‘Mahatma’ i tried to use Pure Forms like cubes and cylinders to depict his way to life. Simplicity in looks and expression are contradicting the functioning and use of the building which are complex. I tried to show the sanctity of Rajghat and his virtue of life in the Zen garden. A virtual connection is established by directing the whole building towards Rajghat. The building is in exposed brick as it is the simplest material as it expresses the building inside out like Gandhiji

This Related Studies Project was conducted by one of the professors from my college. We travelled to the mountainous region of Kinnour in Himachal Pradesh towards the north of India. The region in which this village was situated was seeing a tourist boom in recent years, and the state government had allocated some funds towards the development of Chini as a heritage village. On behalf of the state government, we began to liase with the village and its people to see if we could find a viable development solution for the village. The thrust of our project was to match the aspirations of the village and its people towards growth anddevelopment while maintaining a balancewith the heritage and character of the place. The project began with an extensive survey and mapping of the entire village and its environs. We also realised that many of the houses lay abandoned as the owners had left the village for greener pastures. This gave us the opportunity to identify ‘soft targets’ for tourist related interventions such as hotels, guest houses etc. The idea was to incorporate these new tourist related functions within the shell/type of the earlier buildings. Along with this tourist friendly development we also sought to include a number of projects that will help the people of the village such as the extension of the school building, conservation of the temple, development of the village square, community hall etc. The design of all these projects was carried out in consultation with the village people. Community participation was a major factor in the whole project.

TCI WAREHOUSE AND OFFICE, REWARI Transport corporation asked Prof. Ashok B. Lall to design a warehouse which had an office section towards the front of the site. The design is simplistic but certain elements makes it an interesting building with energy efficient features like sun shades, Solar water heater and orientation.

External Fenestration support

Clean Horizontal Railing

REFURBISHMENT OF A RESIDENCE The facade was to be designed along with some interior changes to the residence in Malcha Marg, New Delhi. With minimal cubist additions the house stood out from the usual mundane neighborhood. Shingle shaped sun shade

The use of water-proof wood on the external facade is a new concept in India and the client was quite keen to consider this proposition. Though the building use was storage, clients had to be convinced to benefit from the small extra features like cavity walls, bio-degradable bacteria for reusing waste water.

‘HOUSE IN THE HILLS’

The steel staircase was a later edition without our consent but we did convince the clients to use recycled steel which was picked up from the city junkyard.

The client wanted to build a ‘composition’ assembly of out-houses in his sprawling 350 acre farm high in the hills, which was similar but not mirror images. Contemporary in expression & design, these guest houses were to be used for foreigners who would come to area to be away from the rest of the world.

SON-ET-LUMIERES & ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING After graduation, in an attempt to diversify my knowledge in the architectural field, I joined a firm who specialize in Sound and Light shows and Architectural Lighting. The job profile was unique since it encompassed - the conceptualization of lighting design, - simulations & renditions of space, - testing of fixtures and architectural elements, - finally the incorporation of script with the mood The light director is trying to generate.

The spatial organization of the house is based on a programmatic separation between public and private areas. The public areas are limited to the ground and first floors. The internal cirulation system of the house reinforces the organizational and formal themes. Vertical circulation occurs via two diagonally located stairways. VOLUME AND LAYERS

Exhibition for DSM PHARMA

The Public spaces in the house have been designed as double height volumes in order to emphasize the public character of the space. On the other hand, the private spaces have been layered providing them with a more intimate scale. Similar layering can be noticed in the elevation where various planes / surfaces come together to form a holistic facade. On the facades, the white panels protect the private spaces from view, while a delicate, steel framed glass skin allows light to penetrate the public spaces. Throughout the house there is a subtle dialogue between open and closed spaces, private and public realms.
