Welcome to the 21st Annual Van Norman & friends Production Sale H ello friends,
Who would have thought that the embryonic plan Charlie Van Norman and I put together on the plane be-
tween Dallas and Salt Lake in May of 1992 would have exceeded even his and my wildest dreams as we are now bringing you the 21st Van Norman and friends Production Sale. Sadly Charlie did not live to see his dream realized and when he passed away in 1996, Bill Van Norman and I, under the guidance of Charlie’s and my treasured friend, Susie Reed, started exploring the idea of bringing the dream to reality resulting in the first Van Norman and friends Production Sale in September of 1997. And as the saying goes, “the rest is history.” The past twenty years have seen many changes both in our personal and business lives; however, we have not wavered in our commitment to bringing together some of the best breeding in the industry combined with the vaquero traditions of taking a horse through specific phases of training from a callow two year old to a seasoned bridle horse by age seven or eight. Our goal from the beginning has been to showcase quality animals. We go to great lengths to ensure that you are being presented with the area’s best. It is our intent to offer horses that adhere to the best of ranch standards. Most of the bloodlines represented are among the very best in the industry for ranching and working cow horse. Many of them have been raised and trained on local ranches, which contributes to the development of many beneficial attributes that are unique to ranch-raised horses. Horses that live in a natural herd dynamic— as nearly all of the horses we offer are—tend to be healthier mentally and physically. The high desert environment of the northern Great Basin features terrain characterized by rocks, brush, fast–moving mountain streams, steep hills, badger holes, and of course, barbed wire—all of which contribute to the development of a mount who knows how to take care of himself and of you. For the last few years, this sale has focused on modifying its selection by decreasing breeding stock and increasing riding horses. This purposeful change is in response to the industry’s ever-changing needs. In order to achieve that goal, we have had to expand our circle to include horses from additional guest consignors. With that in mind, this year, more than ever, you are being offered a wider selection of riding horses with exceptional value that you won’t find on every corner. This is truly a select ranch horse sale. We invite you to tour the catalog, visit us online at www.vannormansale.com or on Facebook to view videos and more information. If you can’t attend the sale in person, you can view the previews and auction on line for live video streaming. Then pick up the phone and place your bid with one of our personable and very knowledgeable “phone ringmen.” And as always, if you have questions, please feel free to contact the consignor or the sale management. Either way, we look forward to spending another gorgeous Nevada blue weekend with you in mid-September!

Therefore, “due diligence” in researching potential purchases is expected. The entire sale will be recorded for the express purpose of settling any dispute that should arise regarding statements made in the auction ring.

Freckled Lil Pepto, a 2005 red roan stallion is our latest star. “Preacher” is a really well-proportioned stallion with an amazing temperament and oodles of cow. He is as comfortable in reined cow horse shows as he is weaning calves in the fall or branding calves in the spring. He was trained and shown to several victories by Flint Lee who has to fight with Sharon and Cowboy to get him back to prepare for show season. Both Sharon and Cowboy love to ride him. He is that neat of a horse. Needless to say he is showing a lot of promise as a reined cow horse, a dependable ranch horse, and as a sire. Colts are eligible for the Nevada Stallion Stakes.

“Happy Feet” came to us in a big package when we bought his dam. He has been raised on the ranch. We were happy with him as a colt and he showed a lot of talent, so we kept him for a sire. So far, we are quite pleased with that decision. Happy Feet has been ridden by Michael Vipham and Cowboy. He is another really useful horse in our ranch world. This horse has been exposed to all ranch work including working cattle, roping, and a circle horse. He has been great at all of those jobs and he comes by his ranch name honestly! Our main purpose for him, though, is to further enhance our breeding program. You get a sneak preview of what’s to come with one of his two year olds in this sale. He isn’t a real big horse, but he doesn’t know that, and makes up for it with his great mind and equally great disposition.

Raven is 16 hands, weighs 1150 lbs with black feet, good withers and long straight legs. He was raised by Porath Quarter Horses and purchased through the second Van Norman sale as a weaner colt. He spent most of his life in Sprague River, Oregon, on a ranch serving as a breeding / saddle horse. We acquired him in 2014. We are pleased with the size and disposition he puts on his colts and are excited to offer them to the public for your enjoyment as well.

“Pistol” embodies the old chestnut, “Dynamite comes in little packages!” He is not very big, but he makes up for his lack of size in power, athletic ability, and heart. He was the Nevada Stallion Stakes Open Snaffle Bit Champion in 2009 and won the 4-year old event at the Harney County Fair. He was 4th in the Nevada Stallion Stakes in 2010 and Reserve Champion Two Rein at Kalispell, MT in 2010. He is definitely making his mark in both the Shelman and Bunch breeding programs. Standing by private treaty. His first colt-Pepinics Lil Playgun aka Pete recently sold in the Shelman Summer Sale for $17,000 as a five year old. Cory’s daughter Sydney and son Cory use him to brand calves. He is passing his great disposition on to his colts and like many Playgun-bred colts, they tend to be bigger than their sires.

A half-sister Kwackin x Crackin produced Smart Crackin Chic another NRCHA Futurity Champion. A full-brother Nabisco Roan has been successfully shown by Jake Telford with multiple AQHA and NRCHA Championships to his credit. Fret was trained for two years by Bobby Ingersoll and shown in the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity. Placed 3rd in NSS Open Snaffle with Cory Shelman. Doctor Peppered, “Pepper,” has continually demonstrated the kind of ability you’d expect from his bloodlines. Smart Chic Olena is an NRCHA Million Dollar Sire, and his get are also earners in cutting and reining, with total earnings across the three disciplines totaling over $13 million. Smart Chic Olena himself has been the only horse to have won world championships in both cutting and reining, and Pepper’s maternal grandsire, Dual Pep, sired earners of over $25 million, mostly in cutting. Pepper is exceptionally kind and level-headed, as well as versatile and reliable for ranch work and for competing in town. We’ve found his foals to be friendly, highly trainable, and athletic. His first foal crop is three years old, and we’ve been hearing good things from folks who own some of them. Five panel N/N.

Frenchie brings some complementary outcross bloodlines to our program. While his pedigree’s bottom side offers classic cutting bloodlines, the top side brings in prominent and highly successful arena horse breeding. Frenchmans Guy and Flit Bar are both legendary barrel horse sires, but in the true spirit of quarter horse versatility, Flit Bar also sired winners in cutting, racing, and halter classes, and Frenchmans Guy offspring are competitors in all of rodeo’s timed events. Frenchie himself has been great to start and ride. He’s light and quick-footed, with a blend of kindness, sensibility and speed that should marry well with the cowhorse traits of our mares. Bred and raised on the Van Norman Ranch, this ranch sire is on the money when it comes to qualities that make up the Van Norman program. Very good minded, well structured, solid boned, cowy, and a good traveler; he has proven himself as a producer of fine ranch horses. Ty is riding a four year old gelding by him that is a big, stout, easy going nice horse. “Pistol” carries the heritage of the Van Norman Horse program: the loved and revered Colonel Zippo Pine lineage and out of a mare with old Van Norman bloodlines that has produced many nice ranch horses herself. This is an excellent up and coming sire out of a top producing Van Norman bred mare and by Sophisticated Catt (a three time AQHA world champion with lifetime earnings over $192,000 in cutting.) JP Colonel Blackcatt is very cowy and super quick on his feet! He possesses many substantial Colonel Freckles personas including trainability, good bone, a nice big eye – to name a few. Plus this guy is built to stop. He is very smooth and pretty. Ty started JP Colonel Blackcatt and quickly decided to further his training. In 2012 the young sire was in reined cow horse training with Clayton Edsal. He has been shown at local stock horse events with plans to finish his training into the bridle. Now back at the ranch, the upcoming feature horse is pulling double duty as a sire and a stock horse. This horse doesn’t have the size to be an ideal head horse, but no doubt has everything to make a perfect heel horse, reined cow horse, and ranch horse.

The Van Norman Quarter Horses believes this to be one of the best ranch horse bloodlines. The Colonel Freckles bloodlines are not as available as they once were – but their outstanding qualities have stood the test of time – making them more valuable than ever. It truly is the backbone of the Van Norman Quarter Horse breeding program. JP Rolling Thunder carries a lot of bone and muscle and is very athletic for his size. He has a super disposition and is a true gentleman. His offspring repeatedly reflect his easy going and friendly disposition, combined with athletic ability and stamina. Thunder is doing a marvelous job of perpetuating the Colonel Zippo Pine legacy for Van Norman Quarter Horses. Year after year, return buyers come to the sale looking for Thunder colts.

We gelded him last fall and he has developed into a really nice saddle horse. This is his last colt!! Colts from this particular cross have been slow to mature mentally and emotionally but given some time and patience they have turned out well. This filly has a lot of substance and is very friendly and independent.

This mare is stout, and well built. Bought as a two year old, she was started and found to be a gentle giant. Her colts are good sized but seem to have some life to them and can move well. She’s the dam to JP Blue Badger Lot #64. She should fit anyone’s ranch breeding program! In foal to JP Rolling Thunder. For more information, please call Ty Van Norman at (775) 397-2132.
“Fugly” has been raised and used on the ranch and is great for an inexperienced rider. He is good to rope on and I started picking up on him this year. This summer I have turned him over to my seven year old son to go to his first horse show, junior rodeo and learn to rope on. For more information call Wade at (208) 859-3624. VIDEO

This is a “been there, done that” ranch horse. He has been used in branding competitions and has great barn manners. He has a lot of go and quite fast. He is not for a novice rider, but we ride him with the kids or lead him. Call Justin at (208) 598-3392.

He has a lot of run and go, is super friendly, gentle, and eager. If she turns out like her brother she will have a good mind and a willing attitude. She will have 60 plus rides on her at sale time by Michael Vipham. For more information, please call Ty Van Norman at (775) 397-2132.

This double-bred Bert gelding is from Little Young Bert’s last foal crop. This horse was consigned to last year’s sale, but we were not able to bring him because he was sick. He is doing great and now he’s ready for a new zip code. He is well-balanced, has a willing disposition, and snap in his step. He should make a good ranch or rope horse.

He is a traveler and can cover a lot of country. I have used him in team brandings and ranch rodeos. He was registered as a buckskin but has turned brown.

Talented head horse, winning a saddle and countless jackpots. Our 13 yr nephew started heading steers on him this winter and was pretty solid for him. Bred to run, he runs to cattle quick inside or outside, rates well too. Jack is gentle and good to be around but is no dead head. He is very aware of his surroundings. SR Chex MovinOn is a big boned gelding who is going to have good size to him. In the past, this cross has produced gentle, easy going, good minded colts. We see the same potential with this horse, but as sale time draws nearer call (775) 934-2494 for an update. He is being started by Bergen Haney. Current on shots.
Mucho Leo Bar / Mountain Storm
This is a solid gelding that is gentle enough for about anyone to get along with-everyone from an 8 yr. old to adults. We’ve been heading steers on him all summer and will take him to some jackpots before sale time. Has had lots of calves branded off of him & is good for any ranch job. Call Pete at (208) 739-5604.

If we did “black type write-ups”, this one would take up most of our space. This pedigree shouts performance!! This filly is cute, smart, and extremely athletic. I don’t think she will be very tall, but as Randy would always say, “dynamite comes in little packages”. Her mother showed a lot of potential before an injury pushed her prematurely into broodmare status. Linda at (775) 934-7404.

“Corona” was raised on the ranch. She has been my main ranch horse for the last couple of years. She is such a sweetheart, super gentle! She is great to rope on, great outside. She’ll go at anybody’s pace. She is turned out with geldings. This mare could go any direction, with anyone. She is very stout! 15 hands 1150 lbs. Nice roan filly here. Should fit anyone’s program. Her dam was one of Ty’s main mounts up till the time she was in foal. The dam has speed, cow, stop and heart and grit. The sire is known for his outstanding disposition and his ability to pass that on to his foals. This filly ought to be a good cross! For more information, please call Ty Van Norman at (775) 397-2132.

“Dillan” has been used on the ranch gathering cattle and horses in all aspects of ranch work. He has lots of go, lots of cow, lots of try. He is good to be around and shoes well. He has nice big feet and bone. Call (801) 541-9228 for more information.

“Badger” is a nice big, easy going, stout horse! He handles himself surprisingly well considering his size, and can turn around nice. Not going to get any real big sliding stops with him - but he can anchor himself down to stop whatever you have roped. He handles branding with ease. Speed enough to catch a yearling outside and give you a shot. Not a finished bridle horse, but is handling well in a roping bit. Not proven for youth or beginner riders at as this time, but he certainly has lots of potential to finish out as one. An excellent opportunity to own a big, stout horse, with a dependable ranch training foundation. For more information, please call Ty Van Norman at (775) 397-2132.
Diamonds Cutter / Two Eyed Poco Dee
RT is a thick, stoutly made horse that has been used on the IZEE Ranch at Paulina, OR in all aspects of ranch work. He rides in a loose shank bit and neck reins well. He is good natured and is easy to catch, load, and shoe. He is being ridden this summer by my 9 year old daughter Sierra and is a definite “kid’s horse” prospect with competent adult supervision.

This colt comes from a cross that has been great for us. His dam comes from Leroy Horn’s program, with some older bloodlines that are harder to find these days. His three year old brother stood 15.1 as a two-year-old and is now earning his living as a cowboy horse, and his yearling brother was purchased this spring as a ranch stallion prospect. This one should be the right kind for ranch or show, in a beautiful buckskin wrapper.
CROCKERS MISS HARLA Harlans Man / Crockers BitAHoney
This should be a fun horse to ride. He is easy to get along with, likes to go, and has Harlan, Bert, and King Fritz bloodlines. We were fortunate to breed some mares to his sire, and are pleased with the foals. Pacific Cee Command has produced money-earning barrel and rope horses. Maybe this gelding will be one of them.

CHAPAIGNE AND CAVIAR Definitely A Dunit / My Spooky Ote
Foals from this cross have been quick, ready learners. They are alert and sensitive with the kind of athleticism and ability that could easily take you to the pay window. As a saddle horse, this colt’s dam was very gritty with a lot of bottom to her, so there is good ranch horse potential here, too.

How can you go wrong here? Fancy Blue Chex is a well built 2 year old gelding wrapped in blue. As rare as his color, so is his pedigree. There won’t be many more Long Tall Chexan colts available. The dam is out of our old Freckles Nova who was known for really willing, good minded and athletic offspring. We expect great things! Call (775) 934-2494 for an update as sale day gets closer. He is being started by Michael Mori. Current on shots.

Tall, Dark and Handsome, “Boon” has the look and style to be your next reined cowhorse, high school rodeo or rope horse, with the potential to do it all! Work him all day, then go to town and play. He has big moves on a cow and won’t be beat down the fence. Limited showing at local events with ability to go whichever direction you want to take him. Super well put together filly here. Smart, sensitive and animated, she comes from a proven line of ranch horses with celebrated ranch horse qualities. Her sire consistently produces horses with trainable dispositions. Her grand dam was a big stout mare that had a lot of speed. This mare seems to have quite a bit of go, and it is easy to bring the life up in her. If speed events, rodeo, or team roping interest you, take a double look.
