Hello friends,
Welcome to the 17th Annual Van Norman and friends Production Sale. Thank you
for your interest in the horses offered in this year’s sale. We especially hope you will be pleased with the line-up of riding horses. This recent focus of the Van Norman and friends Production Sale to feature more seasoned horses reflects the changes that have taken place in the industry and the demand for well-started and broke ranch horses. Please rest assured that each of our guest consignors represents some of the best bloodlines in performance and ranch horse circles, as well as great horsemanship. As always, there is a nice selection of producing horses that are capable of bringing you a combination of old proven bloodlines as well as popular new lineages in the performance horse industry. The breeders in our sale have not been caught up in the hype, or buzz of the new and trendy horses just for the sake of status; rather, the breeders represented in this catalog selectively pick out their breeding stock based on their individual breeding goals .We encourage you to investigate the individual programs of the breeders represented. If you have questions about the history of the horses presented, our consignors would be happy to answer your questions and “talk shop. Sounds like a busy, fun-filled weekend. Looking forward to seeing you all there to make new friends and nurture old friendships. Mid-September is always wonderful in Elko and after another dry winter, spring and summer, we look forward to a weekend dominated by good horses and good people to rekindle our spirits!

The produce of Colonel Zippo Pine have proven to be excellent cow horses. His progeny have been consistent winners at the Elko County Fair and the Nevada Stallion Stakes. They are also being shown successfully in AQHA Ranch Versatility shows. They are extremely good-minded. His colts are eligible for the Nevada Stallion Stakes. Sadly this grand old man who has had such an impact on our program passed away several winters ago. The fact that he still is included as a Reference Sire is testimony to his influence in the Van Norman Sale and beyond.

“Freckles” was shown in the Novice Division at the Snaffle Bit Futurity in Reno, Nevada, in 1990 and tied for third in the herd work. He is very athletic and full of cow. His offspring have been shown in the Nevada Stallion Stakes and the Elko County Fair where they have always been in the money. His colts have excellent dispositions and willing attitudes. He was champion stallion at the 1997 NEVADA STALLION STAKES. Freckles is no longer settling any mares, but his influence on our program will be with us for many generations.

We kept this horse as an eventual replacement for Colonel Zippo Pine. He carries a lot of bone and muscle and is very athletic for his size. He has a super disposition and is a true gentleman. I think he will prove to be one of our better stallions as time goes on. We rode him as a two-year old and it was a tough call to put him into the breeding program rather than continuing to ride him. Thunder now has the task of perpetuating the Colonel Zippo Pine legacy and is very capably assuming the role of the Van Norman Quarter Horses senior stallion.

Van Norman Quarter Horses bought this horse from the Lapkes in Iowa in 2009. He had 45.5 performance points in working cow horse and reining. He was an AQHA world championship show qualifier, but due to an injury, he never proceeded much more with his show record. He has been shown at some local working cow horse shows, but mostly he has been used on the ranch, at ranch ropings, and some team ropings. He excels at everything, and has such a gentle and kind demeanor. He stands 15.1 hands, strong, good looking, and very trainable.

Van Norman Quarter Horses bought Wrangler in August 2011 from Lacey Livestock of California. He has won over $40,000 in NRCHA, NCHA and NRHA events. He placed 3rd and 5th at The World’s Greatest Horseman event. He is an awesome heading horse and some of his get are doing well in barrel racing competitions. His full brother is Starlights Wrangler owned by Dell Hendricks – an accomplished reining competitor. He has the size, disposition, and conformation necessary for a good ranch horse. His first foals for this program are on the ground, and they show his same speed and agility. He is a proven performer in reined cow horse, cutting, and reining, as well as a ranch sire. Van Norman Quarter Horses is very happy to have him.

Freckled Lil Pepto, a 2005 red roan stallion is our latest star. We call him “Preacher.” Preacher is a really well-proportioned stallion with an amazing temperament and oodles of cow. He is as comfortable in reined cow horse shows as he is weaning calves in the fall or branding calves in the spring. He was trained and shown to several victories by Flint Lee who has to fight with Sharon and Cowboy to get him back to prepare for show season. Both Sharon and Cowboy love to ride him. He is that neat of a horse. Needless to say he is showing a lot of promise as a reined cow horse, a dependable ranch horse, and as a sire. Colts are eligible for the Nevada Stallion Stakes.

No need to hype this pedigree. It speaks for itself. As a sire Nick produces athletic attractive colts with lots of action and brains. They seem to very versatile. One of his sons is successfully running barrels with Paty Raine in California. Others are on ranch payrolls and surely earning their keep. The oldest colts are now five so he has a long way to go. Nick is full of cow.. to relieve his boredom away from breeding season, he keeps his pen free of intruders by working the blackbirds and ravens who foolishly invade his space. He is affectionately referred to as “The Mustang” because of his long mane and tail and often scruffy appearance.

He was 4th in the Nevada Stallion Stakes in 2010 and Reserve Champion Two Rein at Kalispell, MT in 2010. He is defintely making his mark in both the Shelman and Bunch breeding programs. This is “Tuco.” We got him a year ago out of Oklahoma because he was bred similar to our stud Bert Bottom. They have been in a drought also. He was pretty starved out when we got him so he is a bit of a late bloomer. He is super gentle and the easiest colt I have started for a long time. He will have around 45 days riding by sale day and some of those will be by my 10 yr old son.

This gelding has the breeding to be a good performance horse. Ty has successfully shown both his sire and dam in stockhorse and reined cow horse events. This guy was a late colt, so he doesn’t look as mature as the other colts born the same year. Not real splashy – but he is going to be a good dependable using horse.

Ty started calling this horse “Swamp Rat” a couple of years ago because he was so easy going in the muddy bogs during calving season. He has mostly been ridden by the hired cowboys. In that time, he has seen a lot of miles and has had numerous calves branded and cattle doctored on him. Very laid back, never bucked or acted broncy. By the time he’s 9-10 he may make a kid’s horse! Height: 14.2

Socks is good looking and flashy. He was started as a 2-year old and has been ridden on the ranch. He’s been to a few brandings, has some cow, and wants to stop and turn around. Scar on left hind cannon bone and front left pastern. Will stand 15.2, 1250 lbs. when done growing.

Coolee was a small 2 year old so was started late and has been brought along slowly which has paid off as she is good- sized now. Playguns are slower to mature but have carved out a niche in ranch versatility and working cowhorse competitions after their four year old year. Pendelton is a good sized five year old gelding who has done it all on the ranch. He has been ridden by Malachi so he knows how to travel and handle a rope. He is a gentle, all around good using horse who could have a place in the roping arena or just as a solid dependable ranch horse. Has that rare grullo color to boot!
EIGHTY SIS
Eddie Eighty / Peppy San Sis
This little horse is stout, willing, kind and quiet. He has handled all the work on the ranch with ease. I have used him to gather, brand, wean, and sort. I have necked big soggy calves and heeled some light yearlings on him. He has had a lot of riding. He has a couple of scars but nothing to worry about.

This is a pretty filly. We started our first set of colts by Peptos Playboy this year. They all want to stop and use their hind end – move around easy and change leads with ease. This filly is likely no exception. Her mother has been shown in some stockhorse classes and is an extremely cowy mare. This filly has the potential from both sides to be an outstanding stockhorse.

This is your chance at a young well-trained versatile mare! She has been shown in California in some AQHA cow horse shows and is a huge stopper. As a bonus she is good to use on the ranch to brand, gather, doctor, work cows on or do anything that may come up. Take her to the roping arena where she should handle either end easily. Anyone looking for speed – take a look. She is bred to run on the bottom. Colonel Freckles on the topside gives her some superior disposition potential to go along with the speed. Again, 775-756-6508 (home) or 775-934-7404 (cell) or e-mail at mrsbunch@rtci.net
