W

Welcome to the Annual Van Norman & friends Production Sale

ho would have thought that the embryonic plan Charlie Van Norman and I put together on the plane between Dallas and Salt Lake in May of 1992 would have exceeded even his and my wildest dreams as we are now bringing you the 20th Van Norman and friends Production Sale. Sadly Charlie did not live to see his dream realized and when he passed away in 1996, Bill Van Norman and I, under the guidance of Charlie’s and my treasured friend, Susie Reed, started exploring the idea of bringing the dream to reality resulting in the first Van Norman and friends Production Sale in September of 1997. And as the saying goes, “the rest is history.” The past nineteen years have seen many changes both in our personal and business lives; however, we have not wavered in our commitment to bringing together some of the best breeding in the industry combined with the vaquero traditions of taking a horse through specific phases of training from a callow two year old to a seasoned bridle horse by age seven or eight. Our goal from the beginning has been to showcase quality animals. We go to great lengths to ensure that you are being presented with the area’s best. It is our intent to offer horses that adhere to the best of ranch standards. Most of the bloodlines represented are among the very best in the industry for ranching and working cow horse. Many of them have been raised and trained on local ranches, which contributes to the development of many beneficial attributes that are unique to ranchraised horses. Horses that live in a natural herd dynamic—as nearly all of the horses we offer are—are healthier mentally and physically. The high desert environment of the northern Great Basin features terrain characterized by rocks, brush, fast- moving mountain streams, steep hills, badger holes, and of course, barbed wire—all of which contribute to the development of a mount who knows how to take care of himself and of you. For the last few years, this sale has focused on modifying its selection by decreasing breeding stock and increasing riding horses. This purposeful change is in response to the industry’s ever-changing needs. In order to achieve that goal, we have had to expand our circle to include horses from additional guest consignors. With that in mind, this year, more than ever, you are being offered a wider selection of riding horses with exceptional value that you won’t find on every corner. This is truly a select ranch horse sale. We invite you to tour the catalog, visit us online at www.vannormansale.com or on Facebook to view videos and more information. If you can’t attend the sale in person, you can participate on line at www.horseauctionslive.com for live video streaming and on-line bidding. And as always, if you have questions, please feel free to contact the consignor or the sale management. Either way, we look forward to spending another gorgeous Nevada blue weekend with you in mid-September!

Freckled Lil Pepto, a 2005 red roan stallion is our latest star. “Preacher” is a really well-proportioned stallion with an amazing temperament and oodles of cow. He is as comfortable in reined cow horse shows as he is weaning calves in the fall or branding calves in the spring. He was trained and shown to several victories by Flint Lee who has to fight with Sharon and Cowboy to get him back to prepare for show season. Both Sharon and Cowboy love to ride him. He is that neat of a horse. Needless to say he is showing a lot of promise as a reined cow horse, a dependable ranch horse, and as a sire. Colts are eligible for the Nevada Stallion Stakes.

“Happy Feet” came to us in a big package when we bought his dam. He has been raised on the ranch. We were happy with him as a colt and he showed a lot of talent, so we kept him for a sire. So far, we are quite pleased with that decision. Happy Feet has been ridden by Michael Vipham and Cowboy. He is another really useful horse in our ranch world. This horse has been exposed to all ranch work including working cattle, roping, and a circle horse. He has been great at all of those jobs and he comes by his ranch name honestly! Our main purpose for him, though, is to further enhance our breeding program. You get a sneak preview of what’s to come with one of his two year olds in this sale. He isn’t a real big horse, but he doesn’t know that, and makes up for it with his great mind and equally great disposition.

“Shiney” came to us as a yearling from Carol Rose . He is a grandson of Shining Spark. Shiney was trained for a couple years with Flint Lee. We needed to get him into our breeding program, so we brought him home and started riding him on the ranch. He has been exposed to all phases of ranch work and he shows a lot of promise in a world new to him. He is very cowy, great on which to rope, and just a pleasure to ride! In a year or two, he is going to be a great all around horse both on the ranch and in the arena. His first colts hit the ground this spring! They are colorful, and as babies seem to have good minds. You get a sneak peak of his offspring at this sale and will be seeing many more of his colts in the future.

“Pistol” embodies the old chestnut, “Dynamite comes in little packages!” He is not very big, but he makes up for his lack of size in power, athletic ability, and heart. He was the Nevada Stallion Stakes Open Snaffle Bit Champion in 2009 and won the 4-year old event at the Harney County Fair. He was 4th in the Nevada Stallion Stakes in 2010 and Reserve Champion Two Rein at Kalispell, MT in 2010. He is definitely making his mark in both the Shelman and Bunch breeding programs. Standing by private treaty. His first colt-Pepinics Lil Playgun aka Pete recently sold in the Shelman Summer Sale for $17,000 as a five year old. Cory’s daughter Sydney and son Cory use him to brand calves. He is passing his great disposition on to his colts and like many Playgun-bred colts, they tend to be bigger than their sires.

This is an excellent up and coming sire out of a top producing Van Norman bred mare and by Sophisticated Catt (a three time AQHA world champion with lifetime earnings over $192,000 in cutting.) JP Colonel Blackcatt is very cowy and super quick on his feet! He possesses many substantial Colonel Freckles personas including trainability, good bone, a nice big eye – to name a few. Plus this guy is built to stop. He is very smooth and pretty. Ty started JP Colonel Blackcatt and quickly decided to further his training. In 2012 the young sire was in reined cow horse training with Clayton Edsal. He has been shown at local stock horse events with plans to finish his training into the bridle. Now back at the ranch, the upcoming feature horse is pulling double duty as a sire and a stock horse. This horse doesn’t have the size to be an ideal head horse, but no doubt has everything to make a perfect heel horse, reined cow horse, and ranch horse.

Van Norman Quarter Horses bought this horse from the Lapkes in Iowa in 2009. He had a brief but promising career in working cow horse and reining, accumulating 45.5 AQHA points and qualifying for the World Show. Due to an injury, he never proceeded with his show record. Peptos Playboy is an outstanding horse, not only on his papers – but in the arena and on the ranch as well. Along with using him at ranch rodeos and branding competitions, Ty also began heading and heeling on him which he took to with no problems. Six-year-old Anna was riding him on the ranch – now ten – she shows him in youth stock horse classes. He is gentle, kind, easy to be around and behaves like a gelding. At 15.2 he is strong, cinches deep and is stout on a rope. His first foals for the program are just now in training with favorable results. HE SELLS AS LOT 81!!!

Her dam is a good-minded mare that was ridden on the ranch demonstrating above average traits which qualified her a spot in the broodmare band for years to come. She is a good traveler with an easy going personality. Horses from her lineage have had a long history in the Van Norman breeding because of their versatility—great ranch horses, kids horses, rodeo competitors, rope horses. Her sire has earnings in the NRCHA and is a proven ranch sire. In addition, he even has some barrel horses out there by him when crossed on running mares. His sire is a newer addition and this is his first foal crop for the program. Ty has been heeling on him and reports that he is a hard stopper. Ty is riding a four year old gelding by him that is a big, stout, easy going nice horse. “Pistol” carries the heritage of the Van Norman Horse program: the loved and revered Colonel Zippo Pine lineage and out of a mare with old Van Norman bloodlines that has produced many nice ranch horses herself. Ride him or breed him or both!

Peppy Jugs is a nice big mare, good bone and a good back. This mare traces back to some great ranch horses that have been used in the Great Basin for generations. She was acquired from a friend getting out of the breeding business who had used her for many years as a broodmare on a ranch in Nevada. Although she hasn’t always been in the Van Norman program, that family of horses fits right in with the goals to produce dependable, cowy ranch horses. This mare has the size and color to produce some eye-catching colts. In foal to JP Black Cat for a May/ June foal.

Gunna Smoke / Wild Wild Wilma

This mare has been raised outside in the rocks and brush. She has that Colonel Freckles disposition and the athleticism of Smart Little Lena. You can’t miss!!!! She will have about 50 days riding by sale time. For more information as we get closer to sale day, call Ryan in the evenings at (208) 868-3278.

This is a hard mare to part with. She has been a great producer. All of her colts have some substance to them and are laid back as you can get. They usually have a lot of color. She is easy to be around and puts that same demeanor in her colts. Good boned, decent sized and still in great shape to continue to have colts for quite a while longer. Currently in foal to Peptos Playboy for a May/June foal.

This is a bred-up filly on the cow horse end of things. Shawn and Mindy Goemmer own the sire and use him in their program, and he is turning out some nice horses for them. The dam was bought from the TS ranch and seems to be a good-minded mare with a good back, good bone and some size. This filly moves around with ease and can really stop and turn. She has a lot of potential to go in many different directions.

JESSA CASH REMEDY

Nu Cash / Illustrious Remedy

This is a filly that is hard to let go of. The dam was trained and shown as a working cow horse, bought with the intentions for Ty's daughters to compete on. The sire is a really nice working cow horse that Dave Thacker has been campaigning. This foal shows promise of being a powerful performer. She moves around easily and uses her hindquarters naturally in her stops.

This is a super catty colt. He is pretty sensitive and wide-awake. He is by a Bert stud Matt Mori owns and out of a mare raised by Bill Van Norman. Matt reports that he has had some nice siblings to this guy. He should be good-minded with a big motor; the kind you have to be patient with in the early years — but in the end will have an exceptional horse that just gets better with age. He will have 60 or more rides on him by Mike Vipham.

Wow! What a hip on this colt! The dam has some old familiar bloodlines to ranch horse enthusiasts. Shining Blue Spark, owned by Goemmer ranches, is a fairly new stud for them, and they really seem to like him so far. Shawn says that his foals have been some of the easiest to halter break that he has ever had. This is a nice colt, and will surely make a nice mount.

If you are looking for a mare that's going to produce a good traveling, ride all day kind of ranch horse with some size and a nice disposition, this might be what you are after. With her pedigree, this mare would probably produce nice rope horses as well with size and good backs, feet and bone. Dave Thacker put 30 days on her as a two year and said she was nice, gentle and easy to train. She has had an injury at some time and steps a little short behind but does not seem to affect her. She is in foal to JP Colonel Pistol for a May/June foal.

CHARLEY TUTOR

Docs Roan Tutor / Charleys Tiny Hugs

Nice colt! He has lots of confidence, learns quickly, is very athletic and gentle. Should mature at 15.2 hands plus. He is a grandson of I’ll Be Smart and his dam is by a NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion and out of a Van Norman bred mare. Should make a great ranch or rope horse. He has a scar on his right hind foot, but has never been lame.

This is “Squirt.” He was one of the first foals born this spring. His dam is a faithful producer of good-sized using horses no matter what she gets crossed on. The sire is coming on strong as a heel horse - watches a cow and has a lot of rate. “Squirt” should be a do-anything type horse.

This guy has class — well-built with a lot of expression. He is a sensitive horse with plenty of life — not a good beginner’s horse. This cross should be an award-winning recipe for a really nice mount. Her dam is representative of much of our program over the past 20 years, and her sire has figured into that program as well. She is sorrel now but I think will turn gray so have registered her that way. Her dam’s full brother has been used at both the NFR and PBR the past five years roping bulls and steers. He is very tough on the end of a rope.

This is a young bridle horse that is ready to go. He has been used on the ranch to calve heifers, brand calves, sort pairs, doctor yearlings, work the ally and load trucks. He is kind and willing. Not one to be humpy. Just the good all around, no nonsense using kind.

Red Bandana Two / Red Straw Image

Take a close look at this outstanding stallion prospect. His sire has excelled in NRCHA events, and his dam is Van Norman foundation blood, authoring an ongoing line of great horses. Wranglers Starlight is a leggy horse with a ton of stop, speed, cow and athletic ability. He excelled as a rope horse, reined cow horse, ranch horse, with the speed for a barrel horse. Wrangler seemed to put his stamp on all his offspring — so no doubt this guy shares a lot his traits. He will have 60 or more rides on him by Mike Vipham.

This is an opportunity to purchase a mare with a trustworthy lineage that you can ride or breed. The dam is a classic Colonel Zippo Pine protégé — super kind, dependable and user friendly. To boot, this mare is in foal to reference sire JP Rolling Thunder for a May/June foal. Thunder foals are good ones. "June" stands 15 hands, has good bone under her, a gentle disposition, and is well started. She did not receive as much riding as some of the other horses her age from the Van Norman program, but she has a nice foundation on her that will be easy to build on.

DIAMOND LADY DOLL

Hadleys Legacy / Sonnys Char

This filly is defined by her name — elegant and stylish. This is one of our best from this year’s crop. Her dam has produced several sale toppers. They are very talented and versatile — cut, rein, rope, ranch-and then breed her when you are through riding her. A lot of potential here!!

This has been a good mare. Ty has two geldings out of her that have both been good traveling horses — the kind you enjoy making a circle on to gather cattle. They make great ranch or rope horses. This is a pretty roan filly with some chrome. She is an eye catcher! This is the first foal of this cross, but her half-brother is a super nice riding gelding, and the dam herself was nice to ride. She is good-minded and very willing. The Blackcat offspring have some big, fast moves and are pretty sensitive at first, but have quieted down with a little handling.
