Both its interior performance hall and its grand exterior were innovative in their time, but with the growth of ASU, it has become stale in its daily connection to student life. Encore is an architectural addition that evolves the social significance of Gammage by transforming its program into a nodal point of gathering, where performance and irrigation are joined to create an unconventional outdoor venue. The interior stage that is normally limited to nights of large productions, now extends outside the building where it is framed by a theatrical backdrop composed of digital, textile, and natural features. The space offers an imaginative new platform for students and performers to inhabit.

Encore is an explorable tower that hosts a cyclical water collection and irrigation system. The immense downspout collects large amounts of water from the desert monsoons, which is then stored and distributed to a variety of small water features and planters. The green wall is created by a series of hanging gutters that trickle water down to vines below. This dynamic system hangs on wires that are attached to the large “curtain” facade, taking inspiration from the counterweight rigging system used to fly scenery, props, and curtains on and off a stage. As water runs down the gutters, an imbalance in weight creates a bobbing movement between all the members, giving the space a dramatic presence.

Sika Futoro I n t e r n a t i o n a l A i r p o r t Te r m i n a l Semester: 4 t h y e a r, F a l l / 2 0 2 1 Instructors: Kobina Banning Brian Ballard Software: R h i n o 3 D , I l l u s t r a t o r, P h o t o s h o p , E n s c a p e Project Location: Kumasi, Ghana For the last three decades, Kumasi has experienced exponential urban growth, resulting in an informal, chaotic, high-spirited city. Sika Futoro addresses the growing need for international travel while rooting itself in layers of sacred culture and instinctual uses of the tropical environment. Both the name and design of the building came from a commonly used textile motif that means “gold dust”, representing the pride and vibrancy of the people who call Ghana home. This international terminal extension embraces the potential to boldly introduce the Ashanti Kingdom to visitors, to become a shining icon for locals to call their own, and to positively influence the necessity of city-wide urban redevelopment.

The phenomenological forces of the tropical location shape the terminal, with a naturally cooled open-air greeting hall and a modular roof system that provides needed shade and indirect sunlight throughout the day. The wide roof catches rainfall like a leaf, and directs the water to an intricate drainage system,

funneling into a series of bioswales that cut through the building, around the site, and back to the local streams. This system enables nature to frame the bright colors and geometric patterns that cover the interior and exterior of the terminal, making Sika Futoro an unforgettable hub of air travel.

Little Sparks Reggio Emilia Preschool Semester: 3 r d y e a r, S p r i n g / 2 0 2 1 Instructor: Elizabeth McLean Software: R h i n o 3 D , I l l u s t r a t o r, E n s c a p e Project Location: Phoenix, Arizona The urban fabric of downtown Phoenix is quickly evolving, with mid-rise housing filling in the gaps of historic neighborhoods that now house bustling boutique shops and restaurants. Little Sparks Preschool nestles into this context, finding its home in an adaptively reused firehouse built in the 1930’s. The earthy brick materiality is contrasted by the addition of colorful glass, playfully integrated into each space. The architecture encourages an acknowledgment of time past and sparks the imagination for whats around the corner. Curiosity and community are central to the Reggio Emilia pedagogy. This influenced an internal flow and exterior connection that are interwoven to give the children multiple perspectives and a daily awareness of the outside world.

The concept of “raised neighborhood gardens” was developed to address this issue, focusing on maximizing horizontal, outdoor walking distances, outdoor balcony spaces for each unit, and communal indoor living spaces on every level. During a pandemic, each floor becomes its own island neighborhood, where residents can safely interact with one another and remain active within their small community. Horizon Gardens takes inspiration from the existing historic building on its site and the hot desert climate, but the concept can be adapted to accommodate any location.

The structure was born over a series of transformations directed by the verbs: “separate”, “repeat”, “scale”, “skew”, and “reflect”. The result is a 4-story monument that reflects and facilitates the mental journey needed for healing and restoration. The lowest level is dark, cool, embedded in the hillside, and secluded from the outside world. The next two levels contain small alcoves with various views tightly framed by the sandstone and weathered steel materiality of the structure. The final level ascends to a pinnacle platform, large enough for only one or two people, with an unbroken view of the sky and valley below.

A Summer in Italy

During the summer of 2021, I had the opportunity to work at an architecture office in Rome, Italy. Throughout my stay, I had a daily task to select a building, read about its history, sketch its floor plan, and then explore it physically. Photography became an empowering tool in this final step, leading me to explore new angles, find obscure details, and ask deeper questions. At the start of the summer, I wrote down: “CAN SYMMETRY AND VARIETY COEXIST?” After exploring both the iconic and the everyday buildings of the city I came to find that these two principles contribute greatly to the palimpsest of Rome. The visible layers of history found in the built forms contain both classic symmetrical patterns alongside more organic, unestablished growth, creating a sense of depth I’d never observed before. This enriching experience has left me with a passion to deeply research and understand the history of a place throughout the architectural process.

Frame of Mind

The journey into action sports photography has taught me several valuable lessons, that I have found applicable to all creative endeavors: BE PATIENT. Between the athlete and the surrounding environment, there are many factors that must line up for a successful shot. Being anxious or in a rush leads to negative energy and missed opportunities. BE AWARE. All of these critical factors are the possible ingredients of a well composed image. Weather, lighting, angle, proximity; conscious awareness of these elements creates a broader scope of utilization. FOLLOW YOUR INTUITION. Listening to your gut is where personal style develops, an aesthetic that can grow into a recognizable trademark. I gravitate towards capturing expressive details, whether at the apex or a transition, that showcase the style of an individual.
