SHIKUMEN, one of the most classical local traditional residential building type in Shanghai, still own its identity in the history of Shanghai. It is a hybrid product that combines western and Chinese residential construction tradition. MingDeLi is such a typical ShiKuMen residential community in Jingan, which is used to be French Conssension during the last early twenty centries. In Summer 2018, one of my best friends commissioned me to renovate the room on the ground floor with a patio in MIngDeLi, a historical Shikumen neighborhood. one of the most requirement is to design an addition as a bathroom for the unit she just bought. Since the original apartment was already occupied and separated into serval units by various residents. The initial idea is to create a porous surface on the patio. Both entry of the living room and bathroom should have operatable windows and doors to ensure natural light and ventilation to penetrate the deep interior room. The functional fixtures were carefully layout from the entry to the end of the room. The design of lighting also plays as a spatial divider in this one whole room.

Area: 62 m2(Working space) + 47 m2(exhibition gallery)
M50, located on Mogan Shan Road, is a historical industrial campus and then transformed into a contemporary art campus. There is an original tenant called Ruipin Vision who would like to share the rent and space with my client, Sarah, in L shape space in one of the buildings on the M50 campus. Sarah owns a professional film developing & scanning store on Taobao and I was one of her clients when I was in college, playing with film photography. Sarah came to find me in 2018 before I am going to the United States and commissioned me to renovate the space. Therefore, how two divide the space to accommodate these two group users is the main problem that needs to tackle. A translucent wall is introduced to divide the exhibition gallery and workspace. Sarah owns the east side entry area on the ground floor and the mezzanine. For the workspace of both two tenants, the printing and film developing fixtures are the main focus and then the operation space is left based on client's requirement.
