Mission of the Department of

University Recreation mission statement Our mission is to provide a wide variety of quality recreational programs in a safe and secure environment that enhances the social, mental, and physical well-being of the entire university community. As a result, the Department of University Recreation performs a vital role in the recruitment, retention, and education of students and personnel.

Facility Management The primary areas of responsibilities are scheduling, supervision, maintenance, membership recruitment, security of the HPER Building, and open recreation activities. Examples of open recreation activities include: weight lifting, swimming, racquetball, and basketball. HPER memberships, guest passes, locker and towel rentals, racquetball reservations, and modern fitness equipment are available to qualified students, faculty, staff, and alumni. In addition, the recreational facilities of the HPER Building are available to various organizations for special events.

Open Recreational Activities The HPER building offers a wide array of recreational spaces for the University of Arkansas students and HPER members. These areas include the pool, racquetball courts, ping pong tables, jogging track, climbing and bouldering walls, and fitness center. Facility Management also has gyms available for basketball, badminton, or volleyball depending on the court setup.

Equipment Rentals The HPER Service Center houses all recreational equipment available for member checkout. Recreational equipment is available for same day check out only. Members need to bring their HPER ID to the Service Center if they want to check out equipment. The Service Center also sells day lockers. The Service Center has the following equipment: basketballs (men’s and women’s), volleyballs, pull buoys, kickboards (small, medium, and large), aqua joggers, hand paddles, racquetball racquets and balls, ping pong paddles and balls, badminton racquets and birdies, and jump ropes. All items require a student/HPER ID.

Room and Facility Reservations

The HPER Facility and usable spaces within the HPER are available for reservation and rental by university and non-university groups. Spaces available for reservation include gyms, the natatorium, dance studios, conference rooms, and multi-purpose spaces, classrooms, racquetball area, student lounge and computer labs.

University Recreation Sports Complex

The 9-acre sports complex is utilized by the Intramural Sports Program for most outdoor activities. The intramural section of the complex includes multipurpose fields, two sand volleyball courts, and 10 horseshoe pits. The multipurpose fields can be converted into four playing fields for flag football, soccer, and ultimate frisbee or two softball fields. Located near the intersection of Razorback Road and Mitchell Street, the complex can be reserved for various activities including: sand volleyball, horseshoes, flag football, soccer, kickball, softball, and ultimate frisbee.

Special Events The Special Events program provides opportunities for leisure, education, socialization, fitness, and fun through a variety of alternative events. All events are FREE and on a drop-in basis. Registration may be required. Past events have included Campus Fitness Walks, Dive-In Movies, African Dance Lessons, Disc Golf Tournaments, Sand Volleyball Tournaments, Cookouts, Bike to Work Commuter Challenge, and Campus Scavenger Hunts.

University Recreation HYPE Night HYPE Night is an annual event that shows all University Recreation has to offer. During HYPE Night the HPER is open to ALL faculty/staff, students and the community. See everything from the climbing wall to the fitness center. Every room will have a different activity for you to try out from indoor cycling to airbrush tattoos to inflatable obstacle courses! Club Sports The Club Sports program provides opportunities for individuals who share a common interest in a specific sport to enjoy the benefits of a group experience. Clubs are regulated by program and university policy but retain the characteristic of self-administration and self-regulation. Members assume roles within the club (member, officer) and are called upon to assist in all aspects of club operations.

Fitness/Wellness The Fitness/Wellness program exists to provide a diverse selection of quality recreational activities where individuals can pursue fitness, wellness, and leisure opportunities that enhance their personal development and establish habits for a healthy lifestyle.

The Donna Axum Fitness Center The Donna Axum Fitness Center features selectorized weight machines, free weight equipment and assorted cardiovascular equipment. Collars, belts and headphones are available for checkout. Group Exercise, Mind/Body, and Aqua Aerobics Each semester brings a fresh and comprehensive selection of group fitness classes. Studio classes such as TurboKick, Group Cycle, and Hip Hop Cardio are sure to challenge all fitness levels. Yoga, Tai Chi, and Belly Dance engage both the mind and the body. Aqua Aerobics are also offered as a non-impact alternative to studio classes. Please refer to the complete schedule of classes and registration procedures before attending. Personal Training and Fitness Assessments University Recreation can help achieve fitness and exercise goals through the use of the Personal Training and Fitness Assessment program. Certified student trainers guide participants through exercise programs, providing instruction, motivation, and personalized attention. Massage Our featured Massage Therapist, Jennifer Nesbitt, is available on established days and times during the week and on weekends. Offered techniques include hot stone and deep tissue massage. Clinics and Special Programs UREC is proud to host national certifications in areas including group fitness and personal training. Instructional Programs From dancing and martial arts to massage and swimming, Instructional Programs offers something for everyone. Classes are a great way for students and HPER members to learn new skills or refine existing ones, all while meeting new people. Pre-registration for Instructional Programs is required and is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Learn to Swim University Recreation offers Learn to Swim lessons for both youth and adults. Offerings are for swimmers of various abilities ranging from beginner to intermediate. These classes are for new and/or apprehensive swimmers. Lessons introduce breathholding, rhythmic breathing, floats, glides, and basic arm and leg stroke combinations. Youth lessons focus also on water adjustment skills: moving in water, front/ back floats.

Red Cross Certification Classes University Recreation is proud to offer Red Cross Certification Classes including Water Safety Instruction, Learn to Swim, Life Guard Training, and CPR/First Aid, all of which do not require a HPER Membership or Guest Pass for Enrollment.

Lifestyle Classes Lifestyle classes offer participants an opportunity to try a new activity or refine recreational activity skills in areas such as dance, martial arts, or activity-specify training. Examples of class offerings include Swing and Ballroom Dance, Lap Swim Training, and Juggling. Participants in lifestyle classes must be a HPER member, or may buy a guest pass for each visit.

Intramural Sports Intramural Sports is one of the most popular student activities on the campus of the University of Arkansas. The program is designed to provide students, faculty and staff an opportunity to participate in athletic and non-athletic recreational activities in a fun and safe environment while promoting physical fitness, social interaction, and campus involvement.

The more than 40 intramural activities are organized on either a team, dual, or individual basis and include flag football, racquetball, sand volleyball, slow pitch softball, bowling, dodgeball, and much more. Each intramural league and tournament sport is divided into three leagues of play: Men's, Women's, and Co-Rec. Intramural Sports are a great way to meet new people and stay active at the same time. Whether you enjoy structured leagues or tournaments, this is the place for you!

Outdoor Connection Outdoor recreation can make your day, and even change your life. It enhances the campus community by organizing diverse adventure activities while offering extensive leadership opportunities. Join us for fun and exciting adventures, learn and refine skills, and make new friends as you explore all that the outdoors has to offer! Our purpose at the Outdoor Connection Center is to meet the outdoor educational, recreational and developmental needs of the students, faculty and staff of the University of Arkansas. Trips and Clinics The trips and activities are offered to currently enrolled students and the university community. The majority of seminars, clinics, and workshops are open to the general public; however, a higher fee may be assessed for non-university participants. There are two fee categories for University participants: Students and University (Faculty, Staff, and HPER Members). For all off-campus activities, participants must be at least 17 years of age and acknowledge that the safety of the group takes precedent over the individual’s perceived needs. Attendance at any pre-trip meeting is mandatory.

Equipment Rental When checking out equipment, please completely fill out the rental form and pay with a check, cash, Visa/MasterCard/Discover, Razorbuck$ or a University cost center number. The Outdoor Connection Center can supply your outdoor needs offering equipment for your biking, camping, canoeing, outoor sports or water sport needs. The Outdoor Connection Center has boats, stoves, sleeping bags, tents, personal flotation devices, and a myriad of other new equipment. Come visit the Outdoor Connection Center and let us help you “go outside and play” in the beautiful forests and streams of Arkansas!

Bike Shop The Bike Shop currently offers mountain, road, and cruiser bikes for rent, free bike assessments, a full service repair shop, and parts and accessories that are available for purchase. The Outdoor Connection Center is making the University of Arkansas campus and the city of Fayetteville more bicycle friendly. Please join us in keeping our campus, city trails and roadways green. Bouldering Wall The Bouldering Wall is located in the HPER Building, Room 102 (Outdoor Connection Center). Only individuals with a valid UA student I.D., HPER memberships, or valid guest pass may use the Bouldering Wall. There is no charge to utilize the Bouldering Wall. Shoes and chalk are available for check-out at the Bouldering Wall at no additional charge. All equipment is for use on the Bouldering Wall only. Climbers are welcome to use their personal climbing shoes.

Climbing Wall The Outdoor Connection Center Climbing Wall is located in gymnasium 1 of the HPER building (Second Floor). The wall is made of red rock climbing panels, providing the ultimate “real look” in rock wall structures. The wall design includes: Full vertical length chimney, roof overhang, negative and positive pitches. A total of 13 belay stations keeps climbers of all levels challenged and entertained. All climbing equipment, including harnesses, belay devices and climbing shoes, are available for check-out at the wall at no additional cost.

FUSED Program The FUSED Program assists groups in communication skills, team building, leadership development, trust and conflict resolution. Whether it’s a teambuilding activity at the climbing wall or a float trip on a river, the OCC strives to provide a positive growth experience for any group.
