Local authors produce an anthology employing writing as a way to heal from abuse means for women to work with their own emotions. “I originally started writing as a way to find my coherent narrative,” said Klatzker. “Now, writing is something I need to do as much as I need to eat breakfast.” Since it can take a lifetime to heal the trauma of past abuse, directing women to access their own innate creativity gives them skills for developing lifelong resilience, Pullen said. This collection is currently the only anthology available that focuses on the experiences of average American women rather than spokes persons, celebrities or women in third world countries. “These women have chosen to take the vast emotions domestic violence leaves behind and channel them into the oldest art form: story,” Pullen said. “It is the art of literature out of pain.” Pullen teaches Insight Journaling TM and is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Creative Writing after working for twenty years in the field of alternative healing.
“The questions in the group reading guide also serve as writing prompts for creating a journal that deconstructs the red flags, and lays bare the denial that often augments the fear of ending abusive relationships,” Pullen said. “The stories in this book convey hard-to-find understanding about what it takes to transition to safety and how to take pain and use creativity to move into a deeper, more fulfilling relationship with life.” The Write to Heal Abuse Anthology is the first edition drawn from an annual writing contest. New Trends in Shopping for 2015 - Courtsey of StatePoint
Whether it’s a husband buying yoga pants for his wife, a daughter looking for fly fishing supplies for her dad, or a childless uncle looking for gifts for nieces and nephews, consumers tend to stray from their retail comfort zones when shopping for loved ones.
Luckily, such strategies are beneficial to customers and retailers alike, and there are some key trends to watch out for in the coming months and years.
Many consumers, particularly millennials, turn to a retailer’s website first before going to a physical store to So how do retailers make make a purchase--and they sure one-time shoppers find are expecting that the locatheir local outlet and retain tion and hours, as well as current discounts and pro- cause of an incorrect adthem as customers? motions, will be readily ac- dress listing. importance of their crucial information being up-to-date at the local level, you can expect to be a better-informed and more efficient consumer. These days, online research drives many consumers purchasing decisions. As more brands catch onto the importance of this trend, consumers can expect that
their online searches for a particular retailer will trend less toward an online directory listing (with potentially obsolete information) and more directly toward a retailer’s locally tailored website. Why Shop Vintage? AUBURN IS A VERITABLE CANDY STORE OF VINTAGE SHOPS AND IT HAS CAUSED SOME TO ASK “WHY?” WELL, HERE ARE A FEW REASONS:
By Deleste Magda
VINTAGE IS ECO-FRIENDLY It’s good for the environment. Who can argue with that? Buying and wearing vintage clothing is currently one of the hottest ways to recycle. An estimated 1-2 million tons of post-consumer textile waste per year are thrown away and end up in landfill sites. When choosing vintage you are doing your bit to help the earth by discouraging the production of more throw-away fashion. VINTAGE HAS HISTORY I love the feeling that vintage clothing has a past life, it makes it mysterious. When you buy a vintage dress, you are not just getting something that already traveled thousands of miles and had several loving owners in their past. It is simply fascinating to wonder whose life each piece was a part of before it became a part of yours. VINTAGE IS UNIQUE Have you ever walked into a party and realized you were wearing the same dress as another girl? I hate this very common social misfortune, I go mad. With vintage you are 28 - February 2015
Old is the new new
sure you’d never see someone else wearing the same dress. Each item is a “rare” piece of clothing. VINTAGE IS A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION There’s no better place to borrow than from the classics! Lots of the fashion world’s top designers are influenced by past decades. Some borrow many of their styles straight from vintage pieces. It’s extremely common for a designer to find a vintage dress, make a pattern from it, and sell it as their own. Industry insiders have always been hip to vintage and for good reason. QUALITY We live in a society of mass production. Clothing factories, mostly in 3rd world countries, produce the most in the shortest amount of time possible. Their philosophy is: Quantity over quality. As a good friend always says, “it’s like fast food fashion”. This is not the case with vintage fashions. Back in time, clothing was made with superior expertise. If you examine most vintage pieces you’ll notice greater attention to detail in textiles, patterns, stitching, etc. Vintage fashions were designed to last and were sewn by hand. Why pay so much for cheap quality? Buy vintage.
VINTAGE IS AN INVESTMENT There will never be more 1950’s wiggle dresses, or 1970’s high waisted bell bottoms jeans made. Because they become harder and harder to find with time they become more valuable as they grow older. It’s basic economics. Vintage is money well spent. VINTAGE EVOKES NOSTALGIA Why not wear a bit of nostalgia. Playing dress-up is still fun. Create a new character with a unique vintage look right out of the movies, create a dialogue, walk down the street singing in the rain and be seen. You can indulge yourself, be Rita Hayworth or Twiggy, Brigitte Bardot, Jean Seberg or Grace Kelly. VINTAGE IS COLLECTABLE As I mentioned earlier, the beauty of vintage clothing is that its value is made to last. Unless you are spending a small fortune on Haute Couture, your clothes lose their value the second you take the tag off. How many pieces of new clothing can you buy and expect them to keep their value? Now, yes not every vintage piece is a collectable, but many are. You can spoil yourself sometimes and collect from any designer, style or era. Classic will remain in-style. PERIOD. There is no doubt about that. The fashion world is a vicious circle; it goes around again and again, so everything old becomes new again! Vintage can be worn anywhere, on any occasion, that’s the beauty of Vintage. Mixing and matching new with old, classic with funky. Fashion is made to be fun. Vintage is made to be inspiring. A Publication by Gold Country Media

When it comes to professional success, the way you present yourself in the workplace should complement the quality of your work. Whether you’re looking to advance your career or simply make a great impression, you can refine your office look and style. Take everything into account, your wardrobe, your accessories and your workspace.
How to Dress for Success in the Workplace WARDROBE: You may not have the top job yet, but the old adage holds true – dress for the job you want, not the one you have. If budget is an issue, don’t sweat it. Online coupons can help you score great deals at mass market retailers. Additionally, discount department stores often sell designer labels at a fraction of the cost. Be sure to press your clothes even if your office is business casual. Invest in an iron and give yourself a few extra minutes in the morning to ensure clothes are wrinkle-free. Every season, go through your closet and set aside clothes that no longer fit, are worn out, faded or out of style. Donate these clothes and make room for new ones.
ACCESSORIES: Rocking the basics can make a great impression at meetings, conventions and other professional events. Show employers, colleagues and clients that organization is important to you by carrying a planner and business notebook. These products not only keep you organized and track your story, but can act as a highly useful accessory to your professional style. Whether you’re looking to stay organized by the day, week or month, a planner won’t just help to improve your image; it can also help remind you of upcoming deadlines so you stay organized.
WORKSPACE: Take ownership of your workspace. Your desk, cubicle or office is visible round-the-clock, even when you are off-the-clock, so make sure it makes a great impression. A few personal items are welcome in most workplaces. Just be sure any personal photos of friends and family that you display are tasteful and appropriate. Lastly, display a stylish wall calendar on your cubicle or office wall to keep important dates in view. Or if you prefer, a desk pad calendar gives you the same view of your busy month ahead. You want colleagues to know that not only do you have a full plate, you know what’s on it. By fine-tuning your look, you can help yourself reach your professional goals and look great doing it. 32 - February 2015
Update your wardrobe By Katherine Katches
T
rends are ever changing and many women like to stay current with what is on trend without breaking the bank. One of the simplest ways to update your look is with accessories. If you buy clothing in a solid color, just by changing out your jewelry, purses and shoes you can have a whole new look with the same clothing year round. To quote the famous model Heidi Klum, "If you only have $100 to spend on an update, spend it on jewelry." Adding jewelry to your every day wardrobe can make all the difference in 34 - February 2015
