When I walk through town, I like to greet everyone with a “Hello” and ask, “How are you?” The response is usually just as cheery: “It’s a great day, and how are you, Pat?” What a nice thing to know that almost everyone you come across in Loomis is a friend or fellow business owner. Loomis families are deeply involved in their community, schools, fundraising and all the different sports that make it easy to be a part of our children’s lives. Through the years, local kids mix and mingle at these events and at surrounding schools so they get to know and grow up with each other. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities that help form a community bond. When my family and I came to Loomis, it didn’t take long to become PTC president, Girl Scout troop leader, swim team president, members of the Chamber of Commerce and assist with the remodeling efforts at the Blue Goose Event Center. New projects and the need for volunteers pop up all the time, giving new and current residents a chance to invest in the town. So, come to Loomis, shop in Loomis and you might end up staying in Loomis where it’s Christmas year round.

ABOUT THE CHAMBER The Loomis Basin Chamber of Commerce has been promoting local businesses for the past 55 years. With 235 members ranging from brick and mortar shops and restaurants to home-based businesses, the Chamber helps members network together as well as connect with customers.

“Customers are more likely to do business with a company if it’s a member of their local Chamber of Commerce,” says executive director Jennifer Knisley. “Networking, advocacy, and increased visibility are all valuable benefits we offer our members at an affordable price.”

Membership benefits include networking and professional development at monthly mixers, educational workshops and seminars, local print media promotion, member-only direct referrals, monthly newsletters, and even ribbon cutting or grand opening ceremonies for new businesses. The Loomis Basin Chamber of Commerce is also a member of CalChamber, a state-wide organization which serves as an additional resource for businesses and employers. The Loomis Basin Chamber of Commerce helps businesses with their online and social media presence as well. The Loomis Basin Chamber also serves as a de-facto visitor’s center, providing telephone and visitor referrals. “I get all different kinds of calls about what’s happening, ‘where do I get this?’, “where do I go for that?” Knisley said. Members can also display promotional material at the Chamber office. “We’re a small Chamber, but we’re a very active Chamber,” she said. “We let people know that you’re there. TOWN INCORPORATED IN 1984 Over the past 165 years, the community of Loomis has transformed itself several times over. From its humble beginnings as a Gold Rush camp to agricultural nexus and finally to its incorporation as a town in its own right, Loomis has adapted with the times while still maintaining its small town charm. The Loomis community exemplifies its motto: “A small town is like a big family.”

After the Gold Rush died down, settlers turned to agriculture to secure the community’s economic foundation. The area’s Mediterranean climate lent itself well to fruit ranching. Loomis-grown peaches, plums, cherries, pears, apricots, and other fruit were shipped to markets as far away as New York, Chicago, and other eastern cities. Out of the 14 original fruit packing sheds, two currently remain on Taylor Road in downtown Loomis. HISTORY OF THE LOOMIS BASIN EGGPLANT FESTIVAL If you’ve lived in the Loomis Basin for some time the chances are you know the history of the Loomis Eggplant Festival and have the answer to the question, “Why Eggplant?” It all started 27 years ago with Tom and Judi Bentzien and Skip Wright, local business owners with a sense of humor. They needed a fun event. According to sources they researched for festivals and the joke was “all the good fruit and vegetable festivals were taken.” So why not eggplant! They grow in 100s of shapes and sizes, boast many beautiful colors, and chefs love to cook with it.

Seventeenth century by Thomas Jefferson. The flowers of the eggplant are similar to those of a potato and tomato and the edible part of the plant is a large pear-shaped fruit like a berry. While the original idea of the festival may have been half serious and half poking fun at fruit and vegetable festivals, the Loomis Basin Chamber of Commerce supported the festival project with two serious goals. The first, to attract people from beyond the Loomis Basin, and to promote the local business community.

Twenty-Seven years later the event still has free attendance and parking. This couldn’t happen without our volunteers, businesses, and sponsors. Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts assist with contests, parking, and clean up. Taylor’s and Blue Goose Fruit Shed, McLaughlin Studio and many local entertainers give of their time and parking spaces. Before the first Eggplant Festival in 1987, there were two very important annual events in Loomis, which were the Loomis Community Days in May and the Del Oro Band Spectacular in the 3rd week of October. Over the years the Chamber has combined the community days with the Loomis Eggplant Festival. Each Eggplant Festival begins its opening ceremonies with the Del Oro Band at 9:00 a.m. Why should you come? This is a chance to visit old friends and new friends. The Festival is full of fun; food, entertainment, and a wonderful opportunity for people new to the area to meet members of the historical society and our many community groups. Love or hate it . . . Call it a fruit or vegetable . . . This is one festival not to be missed.

LOOMIS ART LOOP MAY 09, 2015 A small group of Loomis Basin artists decided to open their studios on Mother’s Day weekend to share art and the fantastic beauty of the Loomis area. Deliberately keeping the number of studios small they can easily all be visited in a few hours. They invited artists working in a variety of media to join the studios so all those taking the tour can find their favorite form of art.

SALUTE VETERANS ON MEMORIAL DAY AT DEL ORO HIGH MAY 25, 2015 A ceremony to honor those in the military services who have died for, and serve, the country is a joint effort of the Legionnaires and Del Oro students. At the ceremony’s end, refreshments will be served and the community will have a chance to visit and personally thank veterans for their contributions.

RED, WHITE & BLUE VETERANS DANCE MAR 07, 2015

The annual fundraiser helps raise money for the Del Oro High School band and is used to purchase equipment, uniforms and support competitions such as the Del Oro Band Extravaganza.

The 5th Annual Red, White & Blue dance recognizes American Armed Forces and Veterans. All proceeds benefit Sierra College “Boots to Books” and Gold County Chaplaincy.

EASTER EGG HUNT APR 04 2015 And they’re off! Kids of all ages scramble to grab as many candyfilled Easter Eggs as their baskets can hold. The Loomis First Assembly of God hosts the annual Loomis Easter Egg Hunt at H. Clarke Powers Elementary School. Loomis’ Thursday Night FamilyFests run throughout June and July. The free weekly event at the Train Depot Plaza features live music, local arts and craft vendor booths, mobile food trucks, and a kid’s zone.

EGGPLANT FESTIVAL OCT 03, 2015 Michelle Wong of Roseville takes home a few Japanese eggplants from Willow Creek Ranch’s produce booth at the Loomis Eggplant Festival. Since 1987, Loomis’ annual Eggplant Festival has been the Chamber of Commerce’s crown jewel of festivals. Culinary delights from ice cream to burritos feature the purple vegetable. Live music, good food, plenty of local vendors, and lots of kid-friendly activities make it an enjoyable time for the whole family.

The Loomis Basin Brewing Company is a family owned and operated microbrewery with a local cult following. Father and son brew masters Jim and Kenny Gowan, who have nearly 40 years of commercial brewing experience between them, opened up their own brewery 4 years ago. “We’re very hands-on. We handle the product from A to Z, even as far as packaging it into bottles. We run it all,” says owner Kenny Gowan. “Our tagline is ‘Always fresh, always local.” And as locals whose roots go back several generations, the Gowan family appreciate their home town support, opting to first release their products at their own tasting room on Swetzer Road in Loomis. “It’s kind of got a cult following now; it’s kind of a high demand product. So we release it here at the front door to make sure my town and my locals have the first crack at it,” says Gowan.

Owner and brew master Kenny Gowan has over 15 years commercial brewing experience. His company, the Loomis Basin Brewing, offers their brews at their tasting room on Swetzer Road in Loomis before distributing it out to local retail outlets, restaurants, and bars in the Placer and Sacramento County area.

The Loomis Basin Brewing Company also handles their own product distribution, eschewing the large corporation route. Their 9 different bottled beer products can be found throughout Placer and Sacramento counties at Bel Air, Rayley’s, Whole Foods, and Nugget supermarkets.

HIGH HAND Loomis’ High Hand has a little bit of everything. Located in the heart of downtown, in the restored Loomis Fruit Growers Association’s fruit packing shed on Taylor Road, the retail facility started out as a nursery in the spring of 2004. It now houses a restaurant featuring farm-fresh local ingredients, an art gallery, two local wineries, antique shops, an olive oil shop, a rug shop, and a flower and gift market. Local Loomis owner Scott Paris wanted to create an inspirational destination experience for out of town shoppers and locals alike. “Everything we do, you have to be able to see it, feel it, and be drawn to it,” he said. “We love what we do.”

FLOWER FARM Located at the intersection of Horseshoe Bar and Auburn Folsom Roads, the Flower Farm is situated on ten tranquil acres in Loomis. Nestled within the orchards and gardens is a farmhouse turned seven-room bed and breakfast inn and a converted barn that now serves as an elegant event venue ideal for weddings, corporate functions, and other celebrations. The property also boasts a nursery, gift shop, Casque Winery tasting room, and a cafe that features fresh and seasonal produce grown on site. “It’s a very busy piece of property with a lot of fun stuff going on,” says owner Annie Bowler. “We farm the land so we have many kinds of fruit trees here. We use that produce in the cafe, but the mainstay of the property is the farmhouse that was built in 1905. INDIAN CREEK COUNTRY CLUB

Originally a farmhouse built in 1905, the Flower Farm Inn has a seven room capacity and is situated on ten acres of tranquil orchards and gardens. Guests can choose from three cozy flower-themed rooms of four private cottages on their scenic grounds and enjoy a home-cooked breakfast in the farmhouse’s sunny dining room.

ADDITIONAL THINGS TO DO IN LOOMIS

Since 1968, the family owned and operated Indian Creek golf course has been a beautiful and affordable way to spend an afternoon. Located in Loomis on Barton Road, the public 9-hole course is a par 32 challenge, with several water hazards thrown in for good measure. “It’s good for beginners and people who want to improve their short game,” says general manager Gary Crets. “It takes 5 hours, sometimes 6, to play 18 holes and many people don’t have that kind of time. You can do this in one and half or two hours. So it’s very convenient.”

The family owned and operated Loomis golf course features a 9-hole course, putting green, driving range, and lessons, all at an affordable price.

Five time LPGA tour winner Patty Snyder and PGA Class A Golf Professional Mark Hatala are both available for group or private lessons.

SECOND BLESSINGS THRIFT STORE Second Blessings Thrift Store located at 6440 King Rd. in Loomis came into being 4 years ago as a result of our concerns regarding the downturn on the economy which was affecting families. We wanted to help people in our community who were having a hard time. We felt if we could offer usable, slightly used goods for sale at low prices, then in turn use those funds to establish a way to offer families assistance with their day care needs and issues in order for them to have the freedom to persue job opportunities or further their education, then this effort would be useful. So far we have established a successful business in our small shop on King Road. We have wonderful items for sale, including nice fashions, collectibles, books, toys etc. Our inventory changes daily as we receive donations from the community. We are open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Friday and Saturday.

There is something quite magical about soda fountains. They were once the popular gathering places for thousands of towns and for many generations of people. They were frequently the centers of attraction for drug stores across America. Soda fountains were where people shared sandwiches, milk shakes and banana splits.
