Dedicated to Muggs, one of the good guys

muggs was the best.

A 24lb Boston Terrier with enough character to fill a stadium. He made friends everywhere we went and even had his own hashtag on Instagram — #muggssf. When cancer struck him suddenly it was a tough pill to swallow. Over the years I’ve lost my share of friends and family, it never gets easier, loosing a child? That takes it to another level. I remember, clearly, holding this little pup in my hands at three months old. He taught me so much. He made the world better. He was one of the good guys. Managing his decline was it’s own challenge, as the stress of it slowly built up I began looking for outlets and I stumbled upon this hobby of mine. I always had a few old toys hanging around the studio and one day while walking

Muggs I noticed some strange shrubbery in the park and thought it would make a sweet landscape for an old Star Wars toy I had in my drawing studio. After our walk I ran excitedly over to the park with a Stormtrooper riding a Dewback and shot the first #jbusinesstoy. What started off as an impulsive experiment has now amounted to a series of over two hunderd photos to date. The whole process is quick, I don’t over-think them. Generally I carry a toy or two around and when the subject, scenery or lighting inspire me I throw a toy down, level off the phone and steal a tiny moment that nobody else saw. The coolest part is creating a story that just a few seconds previous didn’t exist.

The project continues to evolve through experiments with various technologies and methods. I don’t really go for any one style, taking chances interests me way more. The trick of it is to keep shooting and capture the singularity of a moment frozen in time. Muggs passed away shortly after the series began. This book is a collection of the first 30 photographs in the order they were published on Instagram with the original locations and text for each one. All were taken with an iPhone 4 or 5. Thank you for having a look. Feel free to say hello on Instagram and thank you Muggs for being part of my life. —jerry business, february 2015

I drove my ‘77 Lincoln to the Pleasure Palace. Two six packs of Schlitz, 5 packs of smokes and an orangutan named Rosy. Sure, we talked for a while, she told me more than I needed to know about her family. We joked, we cried. In the end our connection was real. Our good times suddenly turned to a blur. I awoke at 5:52 to find Rosy gone. I ran down the hall in a frantic rage, out the front door of the palace only to see the tailights of a rust colored ‘69 Camaro with duel glass packs disappear over the horizon. pleasure palace

After the Rapture I jumped in my turquoise 1964 Lincoln with suicide doors and then headed as far from civilization as I could. The city streets were no longer safe. By the time I ran out of gas I was far down a dirt road by a pond somewhere in the High Sierras. I knew that I had to keep going but I needed a few minutes alone with her. I lit a half cigarette I found in the ashtray of the right rear door. As the smoke invaded my lungs I whispered thank you and goodbye. Turning abruptly I grabbed my survival backpack and then started walking, Never looking back. post rapture word of sin

Black Friday was too intense for the Hulk. The droves of shoppers were driving him deeper into madness. The only solace was the puppys and kittens in the window of Macy’s. As he watched the young innocent life forms frolic he took deep breaths and regained his composure. macy’s

With my cafe racer in tow I drove my 68 Cougar to the Plastic Jungle to set a new land speed record. The air was hot and the scene was cool. Red vinyl seats stuck to my sweaty skin as I made the final approach to unload the bike. She started first kick and I revved the engine while plastic leaves genuflected in the breeze. I was ready to make this happen, to go faster and look cooler than any man had ever gone or looked before.
