Before - South Face
Existing one story house in Eagle Rock, California. A classic fixer, waiting for an architect to arrive on the scene.
After - South Face
The existing cypress tree was captured inside of the front courtyard. Triple panel sliders allow the front rooms to open to this new patio space, kept cool by the sheltering tree. Mobile slatted wood panels enclose the space and can be locked together at night, allowing the doors to be kept open and the breeze flowing through the interior.
Before - West
Existing house was built in 1954. Wood framing, slab on grade, perched at the top of a hill.
After - West
Roof Deck
Rather than removing the tree in the front yard it was enclosed behind the retractable facade
Vaulted Ceiling
The red steel columns of the moment frame are left exposed, expressing the hidden structure while implying a separation of the space.

Home Office
Sliding glass doors reveal a pocket courtyard open to the sky filled with giant bamboo. The pocket courtyard acts as both a light well and a thermal chimney to draw warm air up, pulling cool air into the house.
Kitchen
The interior walls were removed and the roof reframed with post and beam structure and steel moment frame, creating a single large space.
Kitchen
The recycled wood ceiling passes from inside to outside to become the floor of the second floor box, as revealed through the clerestory glass.
Kitchen
Limestone floors and a recycled wood ceiling flow through all the spaces, connecting them.
Details
Deep cut outs create illuminated niches. The niche off the kitchen has built in office. A half bath is concealed behind a rolling white glass door hung from barnyard track. A rectangle of chalkboard paint creates a place for notes.
Bedroom
Long rectangular windows at the ceiling and floor bounce light into the room from different directions.
Carved Walls
Illuminated niches are carved out of the walls. Windows with clerestories are shaded by deep overhangs. A low rectangular window at floor level gives a unique view of the plants.
