YEAR 3
A STRIP DISTRICT MARKET HALL
Located in newly renovated Strip district waterfront of Pittsburgh, placement of a market hall would not only reinforce the local produce that streams into the area already, but help bring new customers and businesses into the already bustling waterfront district. This studio focused on introducing structural systems as a core design aspect. The program included 30,000 Sq ft of Market Hall, 20,000 Sq ft of Office Space, and 10,000 Sq ft of Destination Restaurant. My approach focused on emphasizing local produce and fabrication as well as using localized processed wood, steel, and the rolling hills of Pittsburgh, as well as the gentle waves of the Three Rivers as an influence for design and structure.
WESTERN SECTION
DESIGN LOGIC A Market Hall is a destination space, an area of land that denotes a gathering of local produce, people, and social sparks. With that in mind the architecture should enhance social interaction, be an icon for Pittsburgh and its surrounding community, induce awe with structural bravado and natural materials, as well as be a singular entity to maximize the collection of smells, overlapping conversations, and movement frenzy.
01
Gluelam Structure is supported by Super V columns for increased stability.
02
Longitudinal Beams span the Super V Columns, providing main support.
03
Latitudinal beams provide increased stability and a grid to lay enclosure on.
04
Custom Fabricated glass panels are placed at intervals according to the grid
Construction Logic
05
Expanded Metal Mesh is similarly layered to provide sun shade.
06
Final Enclosure
The construction of this Strip District market hall had to remain domestic, local, and adherent to the surrounding community and their roots. Wood was the first and obvious choice due to its earthly roots and ease of use. Thick laminated glulam beams make up the majority of the roof structure and help this market hall maintain its image as a project with local and honest beginnings. Each structural bay of glulam grid is 10ft x 10ft, with super V columns supporting at ever 30ft. The Glulams themselves are upwards of 5ft thick, with 5 laminated layers of prestressed laminated wood.

HISTORY
The Brooklyn Navy Yard is located in New York City along the East River in Wallabout Basin. This was one of the most active and innovative military shipbuilding facilities in the United States. The site was once the anchorage of British prison ships during the Revolutionary War, and resulted in the horrific deaths of an estimated 11,000 American Patriots and prisoners. The U.S. Navy commissioned the Yard in 1801 and continued heavy operation until 1966. It played a crucial role in American naval, industrial and cultural history, re-inventing itself over and over to respond to the military, technological and social forces affecting the United States.

PROGRAM
01 Super V Columns support vertical and horizontal loads, allowing for increased open floor area and usable flexible space.
02 The main space-frame structure is layered atop the Super V Columns, using triangulated Frame Capitals.
03 Secondary Glass layer is applied to the space-frame.
04 Expanded Metal Mesh is applied as the final enclosure.
05 The mesh layer allows for diffused light into the space and better thermal comfot as a passive system.
