Spring 2014 Final Projects

Copenhagen, Denmark

Located in Scandanavia, Copenhagen is a city that has existed in many forms for centuries. A famous port and nexus of culture, host to Jan Gehl and Hans Christian Anderson, this city has been at the forefront of art, music, science, and exploration in Europe for centuries. Today, Copenhagen is one of the greenest cities in the world, with a large portion of their population biking to work, even in winter. They invest in wind energy, new technology, and are often called the happiest people in the world. Older styles of construction are omnipresent in the city, from the common Canal Homes to classical architecture. This is a city that both dwells in the past and defines the future. A project exploring ways in which people may be brought together in new ways, while celebrating all cultures as well as the self, would thrive in a city where such things are already a daily occurance. The atmosphere created by the Danes is extremely conducive to the holistic aims of the project.

Freetown Christiania

This is the burough within Copenhagen where the site and project are actually located. While it was originally ramparts to the old city in the 1700’s, it eventually fell out of use and became abandoned, despite being closely placed to many of the city’s great attractions. In the 1970’s, the empty land and broken buildings were taken over by counter culture advocates, hippies, and people who felt they didn’t quite fit in with normal society. Today, it is a small town within a town, an eccentric location full of architecture sans architects, nationally famous music festivals, a huge abode for artists, and a haven for people to go when they want to live outside of the normal strictures of society. In short, this is the ideal place to found aSpire. The ideal of breaking down borders and moving past our preconcieved notions exists here in droves. The amenities provided in the tower would bolster the community of Christiania both financially and as a place of gathering.

Hygge, the Gift

aSpire seeks to accomplish its goals not by being solely a new construct for the people of Copenhagen, a traditional program may be great financially, but the relationships between people and cultures extends far beyond that. This tower is a vessal for Hygge, the Danish concept of coziness, good times, warm among friends. Enjoying an aesthetic moment in time with people dear to you. To create this among strangers is the goal of the project, and it is accomplished by providing a juxtaposition of trials and sanctuaries for groups as they struggle to reach the top of the building. It is, in short, an enclosed environment that fosters cooperation and communication between people who would otherwise not come to know each other. Rooms that need multiple people to open a door, cross a passage, activate lights. Scattered floors with calm resting places, views over the entire city, comfortable and warm environments. A last ascent to the top. The relationships that bring us together, time and experience with people, is created through the experience of this building.

The major precedent for my tower design is the Tameer Towers currently under construction in Abu Dhabi. A 73 story building with a seven star hotel, adjacent residential towers, and assorted commercial and residential programming. Most striking is that the tower straddles a canal, which leads boats into a private marina owned by the project. This is accomplished through a combination of clever work with cores and the balanced integration of diagrid structural systems. The two feet of the tower meet high over the water, forming a flying sky lobby, and the tower continues up. My own project takes this programmatic element and applies it to the Hygge gift of Danish culture and the qualities of the ramparts of Christiania. Resting on two seperate footings, the tower is initially commercial and mixed use, straddling a landscaped area that begins as an open space and narrows as you move through the structure. Instead of a marina, you come to a secluded peninsula, hosting a quiet landscape and places for contemplation. Like the marina, you may only access the space through the path provided by the building, and the eccentric structure is held together with dual cores and a diagrid structure. For my podium level, several levels of floors were pushed back to create a massive public space that is both outside of the building and beneath the diagrid supportive structure. This provides places for people within aSpire to gather, hold public events, and observe Christiania in action.

The dual footing, passage to the hidden peninsula of the project

The summit, where one engages in the ritual of the fire. During their climb each person keeps a small peice of paper with them, recording their doubts or trepidations. Once at the apex, they may place the paper in a small fire, burning away those feelings. To be reborn, one must first slay oneself.

Near the end of the tower program we have a reduction, and thus sharpening, of experiences. The last ascension is a simple spiral stair, entirely closed off, yet open to above. Weather and light may enter, and they become more noticeable the higher one climbs. This is a transition space, from an absolute void of the senses moving ever closer to the last experience.

The curtain walling on the upper portions of the tower change out of necessity. We are now so narrow that horizontal members jut out and can be unbalanced visually. The solution is the installation of vertical finned curtain wall systems. This allows for a reduction in overall solar gain when desired, but also follows the form of the building.

The use of a diagrid in the construction of the spire was paramount, it is the only method of construction that can afford the structure appropriate support as it tapers into the sky. Minimal space is used on interior walls, allowing the occupants to have as much space as possible, even in the thinnest parts of the building. Diagrids are also extremely efficient, using less materials that traditional construction. This can save money during design, let the tower remain lighter than it otherwise would have, and by virtue of these it can be built higher. This was taken to the extreme in aSpire.

On the open wall of the public podium, louvers are included to manage the incoming southern sun, which can be intense during the summer months. Fully maneuverable, these may be rotated vertically to block a majority of the light, or left horizontal for clear views. User controlled curtain wall accessory.

In the lower levels, aSpire is a mix of various program. There are two footings, but both share complimentary functions and are open to the public. Restaurants, offices, shops, and entertainment make up the bulk of the podium level. At the tenth level, this culminates in a massive semi-enclosed space; outside the building yet inside the diagrid. The hub of activity within the tower, every level and amenity can be quickly reached from this point, or you may simply take your time to enjoy the views. Here the tower is bifurcated. Continuing up the facade looking over the podium are offices and select businesses. On the far side facing north is the bulk of the residences. The core in this section is dual-faced, serving each, yet keeping them seperate. The final program of the tower resides in the spire, where the experiential programming dominates.

Lateral Loads

Gravity Loads The first diagram shows lateral wind loads, and how they’re absorbed by the diagrid before being transfered to the core, and then the piles. The second diagram shows simple gravity loads, with the wieght of the building being supported both by the core, as well as the diagrid structure. The third diagram is the largest floor within the structure, showing that each point farthest from the core has at least two exits for fire egress. All subsequent floors, being smaller, also fall into the safety bubble. The fourth diagram is marking the footing and piles, showing them moving through the layers of sediment to the bedrock below. The last diagram is calling out the location of the passage between the footings, allowing people to reach the hidden peninsula and meditative areas of the site.

Below, concept of what aSpire would look like from the Church of our Savior, on the outskirs of Christiania.

Footing and Piles

Passage Through

The sole way to move from the public face of the intervention to the secluded peninsula on the other side, the Chasm is a sensory refresh. Open and bright at the entrance, as one passes through it they are pressed in by the walls and made small by the rapidly elevating ceiling. The last steps open onto a grassy slope leading down into a deeply reflective area. Mostly woods and paths, the sole true feature of the peninsula is a pool, immeasurably deep, where one partakes in the Water Ritual. Grounding the sky from a distance, and gazing into you from it’s edge, this half of Aspire is centered on the pool. Rugged land, reflective water, the design is focused on introspection and clarity.

HOLIDAY! (guided positive protest)

Stages of a Social Movement It’s not about changing the heart of Chinese culture, but nurturing its positive aspects and encouraging a more vibrant, expressive self.

In A Practical Strategist, activist-educator Bill Moyers describes the phases a society goes through in order for change to manifest. He also notes the level of activity of different groups within the society. This inspired the definition of my gift as a weeklong event to be housed by the tower. This is the “process of (x)” from the narrative map. From it also came an idea of program as a cyclical process of change.

The site, People’s Square, was chosen for it’s prominence in the heart of old Shanghai. With the PuDong skyline of dominating the international image of the city, The People’s Tower will represent the noncommercial, “big feet”* version of city life. The intent is to crowdfund the tower, inspired by the new skyscraper of Bogota. Analysis (above) calls out elements to be kept and celebrated versus ones to be replaced. *term adopted from lecture by Kong Jian Yu

MUAY THAI MUAY THAI IS THE MARTIAL ART OF THAILAND. BEYOND BEING AN ANCIENT FORM OF COMBAT, IT HAS CARRIED THAILAND THROUGH CENTURIES OF STRUGGLE AND CHALLENGES AND IS THE HEART OF THAILAND AND ITS PEOPLE. IN ITS MOST HONEST FORM MUAY THAI EMBODIES ALL THAT IS GOOD AND PURE. IT IS A PHYSICAL AND MENTAL RELEASE AND CHALLENGES THE SELF TO FIND THIER SPIRITUAL CONNECTION TO THE EARTH.
