Suburbia Transformed 2.0 Award Winning Entry
This design employs an earth sheltered home integrated within the surrounding landforms, community, and habitat. Balance between these features produces Original Home a home which is more efficient and sustainable than is typical of suburban lots. The new building promotes sustainability through use of on-site materials, earth sheltering and the deconstruction of the preexisting modular home. Recombining original components in a new arrangement permits maximal energy conservation through passive solar orientation. Energy savings is further reinforced by utilizing locally sourced and reused materials.

This aesthetic mirrors James Rose’s ideal of creating a garden to be “sculpture that is large enough and perforated enough to walk through.” The design joins the complementary sculptures of garden and home into a single experience; melting away the opposition between them. The ideal of connection flows beyond the structure by involving the neighborhood through a shared network of trails, retention ponds, and natural habitat. This enhances the equilibrium of inhabitants with nature and each other, leading all to a balanced and sustainable existence.

Nearby bus stop and recreational bike trail offer incredible opportunities to connect the site to a larger community. The under utilized disturbed field in the client’s lot could be revitlized to mutually benefit the native habitat and the community surrounding it.

The environmental restoration from a dammed river basin will increase area of human interaction with the site by opening up a dynamic environment which will change volume, shape, and size from day to day.

The intention of this concept is restoration of the proposed site closer to the conditions found during the preindustrial 1800s. Today the lake is a design based on stagnation. A dam literally and figuratively imprisons the energy and essence of this place. By lowering the dam this design embraces, rather then controls the ever changing conditions of a flood plain bring back the natural cycles of water to the environment .

Gowanus Canal Brooklyn, NY The intention of this concept is based on an essay written by Pierre Belanger; Landscape as Infrastructure. In it he challenges us to utilize the landscape as a piece of multifunctional infrastructure which combines normally segregated departments of water, waste, transport, and other structures. My design employs Belanger’s ideals of, “Synergies between land use, synchronization of material volumes, and sequencing of land transformations over time”.

All design intentions are connected to the ecological history of the canal as a brackish salt marsh. The combined infrastructures provide a new ecosystem and protection for the surrounding communities from rising flood waters. The importance of this objective was made abundantly clear during the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. In addition, waste systems are organized as material exchanges between the uplands and lowlands of the Gowanus landscape through street and building demolition and construction. These actions provide a substrate for new landforms and vegetative regime that could enable the canal to become a storm surge buffer.

B Storm water systems are now connected to the new landscape infrastructure, disconnecting them from the aging and over taxed combined storm and sewer systems. Integrating them helps to solve the issues of a combined storm/sewer system (CSO). A problem which has plagued this community for decades. It halts the out fall of raw human excrement into the Gowanus Canal by utilizing naturalized landscape as a piece in the infrastructural puzzle of Brooklyn.

Conceptual garden design for a local high school on Cape Cod. The intention was aesthetic improvement of the nearly void space found at an importance entrance to the school. Plant material focuses on interest during the school year not summer enjoyment. This was a planting design project for the horticultural course, “Creating the Urban Eden”. Our design criteria was focused on a space to be enjoyed by the students and staff of the Industrial and Labor Relation School along with providing ample space for large functions. My planting plan was chosen from 45 others to be used as the model utilized during meetings with the administration and facilities leaders for discussion of design changes and final approval. The finalized plan was installed by the class over a period of two weeks.
