WIAA Interlochen tower survey was performed by the technical committee at the suggestion of Paul KA8HIB. February, 2004 Poor weather conditions postponed the 2004 elections.

The 2004 Swap-­‐N-­‐Shop had 300 paid attendees. 14 persons took VE exams with an 83% pass rate resulting in six new Technicians, one Tech Plus, and one General.

Swap-­‐N-­‐Shop 2013 Report Well, the CARC did it again. Another great swap for 2013. Attendance was down a little with 207 paid admissions but those who w ere there seemed to have a good time. Many items were bought and sold with many interesting eye ball contacts.

Things got underway with the gathering at the Elk's Club for dinner and conversation.

Those attending included N8UUJ, W8PIT, N8WK, K8CAK, N8RRR, W8TVT, AA8SN, K8RCT, N8OUZ and son Julian, W8VPC, and W8DW & NB8LZA from Saginaw. Brian N8TC and Jon N8UL were there for another party but stopped by our tables to say “hello”.

About 7 PM we moved over to the swap site to set up tables and chairs. N8QX was there to set up his PA System. Others helping out included N8WK, KJ4KFJ, K 8RCT, N8RRR, W8TVT, K 8RCT, N8OUZ and Julian. Then there w as the Weaver Family. (What a group) Steve KB8RDI and daughters Autumn and Alyssa w ere out helping with the tables and chairs. Autumn was actually crawling under the stage area pulling out the carts loaded with tables and chairs. Lisa KC8EXD was getting the kitchen in order for the next days activities. Everything was set up and in order by 8 PM.

The kitchen crew included the Weaver family (KC8EXD, KB8RDI, Autumn & Alyssa) and Nancy KB8VEH, Paul KD8UYM, Janet N8RRR, and Deb KD8RTE. They served coffee and rolls throughout the morning. Also available w ere hot dogs and sloppy jobs and all kinds of pop.

Hope AA8SN and crew did their usual good job of administering VE Exams. Assisting her was K8RCT, W8QKP, N8HKQ, and KE8KX. They had twelve people that took various tests. Two people passed the technician test and six were successful with the general exam. Congratulations to all.

We had many door prizes that were passed out. People from the IRA Link Repeater System w ere there and donated some tickets for their June Swap & Shop. ARRL donated some gift certificates for door prizes. Prosoft Plus donated a CD on a Dxpedition. W8AMZ donated a G5RV antenna. The club purchased a soldering station and a UV 5 R dual band HT w hich were the main door prizes. The HT was won by N8TNT of Traverse City.

Special thanks to the clean up crew. They include the entire kitchen crew listed above. Also involved was KC8ZAP, KJ4KFJ, KB8RDI, Autumn & Alyssa, N8OUZ, W8REJ, and Eric KC8CLP. With their fine help we were out of there by 1 PM. (Super Job!) That's my report. I hope I included everyone who took part. ‘til next year.

I was over at the gym at 6 AM to unlock the doors, plug in the coffee pots and turn on the lights. The first one to arrive was K9JP. By 7 AM many others were there to set up their tables. Most of the tables were occupied. We only had three “no shows” from those who had reserved tables.

We had three commercial type vendors which included Theresa from Prosoft Plus, Radio Shack from Gaylord and W8AMZ Amateur Radio Products (Antenna's) from Muskegon.

The CARC re-­‐organization as a 501 (c)(3) non-­‐profit has been completed. Ward reports that as of 2/25/2013, the IRS has approved the status.

So – it is official!

The Cherryland Amateur Radio Club’s now carries 501(c)(3) status.

CARC General Meeting Location Change Imminent Changes in the policies adopted by the Governmental Center require the use of monitoring personnel during use of the building after business hours. These new security and safety measures would result in a several-­‐ hundred-­‐dollar-­‐per-­‐month financial commitment from the CARC to continue holding meetings at the Governmental Center.

The CARC Board is currently researching other options, and the City has extended three extra months with no charges in order to help ease the transition. If you have suggestions, please contact a CARC Board Member.

Currently being considered as a primary location is the Salvation Army at 1239 Barlow St. in Traverse City.

2013 CARC Election Results At the January 22nd General CARC Meeting, Elections were held. Positions up for election were President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Cherry Juice Editor, and Board Member (3 yr).

Jerry Gorrell, W8WFN, Silent Key Glen Arbor -­‐ Gerald Gorrell, 74, of Glen Arbor passed away February 13, 2013.

Gerald was born May 1, 1938 in Charleroi, Pennsylvania to the late Creed and Helen (Hollis) Gorrell.

On April 4, 1959, Gerald married his high school sweetheart, the former Janice Ann Coulston in Dearborn.

Jerry honorably served as a member of the United States Naval Reserves 1956-­‐1968, working in communications. During his time in the service, he pursued and received a degree in electrical engineering from Wayne State University. He had a 35 year career as an Electrical Engineer for the Ford Motor Company where he was responsible for the issuance of numerous patents. Jerry became interested in amateur radio in high school, a passion that continued throughout his life. He was very active in the Traverse City/Leelanau area Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) and the Radio Amateur Crivil Engineering Services (RACES) and has QSL/contact cards representing his vast array of communications from all over the world.

For the past 19 years, he and Janice have enjoyed retirement in Glen Arbor.

He was active in the Glen Lake schools as a math and science tutor and served on the scholarship board. Jerry was also active in the Glen Lake Artists. In his spare time he built furniture, loved the o utdoors and could repair anything from appliances to automobiles.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 53 years Janice, daughters Lynn (Joe) Siciliano of Dearborn and Susan (Ken) Baker of Dearborn, grandchildren Anthony, Alexandra and Maria Siciliano and Grace Baker, brother William (Barbara) Gorrell of Bellaire, MI, and brother-­‐in-­‐laws Dale (Patti) Coulston of Suttons Bay, MI and Wayne (Marilyn) Coulston of St. Clair Shores, MI. A memorial service is being planned for summer 2013.

Memorial contributions in memory of Jerry may be directed to the Cherryland Amateur Radio Club of Traverse City.

Tom Schoonover, K8BTE, Silent Key From the Benzie Amateur Radio Friends website, http://benz-­‐arpsc.org

It is with heavy heart I have to announce the passing of Tom Schoonover, K8BTE. He was a torch in the ARES/RACES group here in Benzie County. He held Emergency Coordinator position working tirelessly with the fractions of public service and the local hams. He was in Arizona with his wife Mary and children Doug and Annete when he passed. Tom was a life member of the ARRL and supported it’s many programs.

Rob W8REJ will spear head a memorial fund to engrave a brick with Tom’s call, to be installed at the ARRL’s terrace.

A small donation will help make this possible.

Grand Traverse County Health Department Open House Yours truly was fortunate enough to tour the newly completed Health Department building for Grand Traverse County. Why is this important? The new building houses a brand-new, nicely equipped EOC (Emergency Operations Center).

Of particular interest and worthy of note is that TBARG was offered use of space and equipment in both the ancillary room of the EOC area and also offered a site for the new TBARG D-Star repeater system on 443.3125+.

The repeater is currently on the air now for testing at a location North of Traverse City.

The new EOC at the Health Department was designed for fluid and efficient response to informational flow and protocol adherence. The large room with desks is the main EOC area, with stations for each operational area of jurisdiction during an event. If you notice the red doors toward the front of the room, they lead to an area where there is a desk and cabinet designated for TBARG use and radio operators.

I am sure there will be many further updates on the use of this location and reports on the progress of the new TBARG KD8OXV D-Star system when it is installed at its new permanent location, which is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the hardware.

SKYWARN

Severe Weather Network What is the TBARG Skywarn Program?

The TBARG Skywarn program works in conjunction with the National Weather Service in Gaylord during sever weather events by providing critical information about severe weather and potentially saving lives. The data will also help forecasters with storm movement and location.

How can I help?

During sever weather nets will be activated on the W8TCM 146.86 repeater. A warning tone will be broadcast and an alert message will inform you of the status of the storm. When nets are activated a net control station will take certain information about the storm, (movement, rain fall, lightning, tornados, ETC) for more information on nets and protocols visit our web site at www.tbarg.org and look for the Skywarn link.

What do I need?

To participate in Skywarn nets you must take the Basic Skywarn training provided by the national weather service. The second thing you will need is a 2 meter (vhf) radio. Depending on what county you live in the net might be on the 145.390 repeater in Leeland, or our primary repeater 146.860.
