Suffering from bonetuberculosis or hipdysplasia and often forgotten by their parents. All the portraits are from the Maitland Cottage Home, Cape Town, South Africa. Like AIDS the incurable disease bonetuberculosis claims many victims in South Africa. It causes the bones in the back and legs to grow together. Children suffering from bonetuberculosis often can’t walk or even sit. Without help, they only lead an existence of lying down. By orthopedic surgery it is possible to make physical corrections in order to improve their quality of life. Unfortunately the distortions are sometimes in such a way that only through amputations relief can be given. After that they have to learn to live with tools such as crutches or wheelchairs (if any are available) which allow them to maintain their mobility.
When visiting Cape Town, South Africa Jeroen Jongeneelen met two guys who did a traineeship physiotherapy at the Maitland Cottage Home. Encouraged by their enthusiasm he visited the hospital to entertain the childeren with his camera. In the end this resulted in a beautiful series of black and white portraits.
