This is the first part of Jerome D'Costa's Bengali-language translation of the life of Father Charles de Foucauld (1858-1916), who, hailing from an aristocratic family in France, becomes an officer in the French equestrian regiment, an apostate leading a playboyish lifestyle, an explorer in Morocco, and finally a fervent preacher in the deserts of North Africa. In 1916, he was brutally martyred in Morocco.
