A Bengali-language article of Jerome D'Costa, published in the 'Pratibeshi' weekly of April 3, 1988, gives the background of Islam being touted as the state religion of Bangladesh during the Presidentship of Hussain Muhammad Ershad, the Jatiyo Party leader. This article, drawing instances from some other Islamic state-religioned countries, tries to show what could be the fate of the minority communities (Hindus, Buddhists and Christians) in Bangladesh if Islam really becomes the state religion.
