A Bengali-language feature of Jerome D'Costa on the post-1971 war devasted area of Shankari Patti, a predominantly Hindu area of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The feature tells of the destruction of historic old buildings, absence of the regular but peculiar sound of conch-cutting, and the looting of the possessions of Hindus by Bihari Muslim collaborators of the West Pakistani occupying army. It also tells of how the Shankari Patti Lane was renamed 'Tikka Khan Road' by these Muslim usurpers, who recently fled the area with the independence of Bangladesh. (Iroically, Tikka Khan - a West Pakistani Army General - was known in occupied Bangladesh in 1971 as the 'Butcher of Dhaka.') Finally, the writer expresses his confidence that Shankari Patti will one day return to its old glory.
