ARCH
PORTFOLIO VOL II
JERRY RODRIGUEZ
Over the years, I began to recognize that creativity is a gift and design is the superpower. The way I see it is that if I can think it, the idea can be brought to fruition. My over-arching idea is that everyone has their unique vision and everyone’s perception becomes their reality. Through this vision of redirecting the importance of societal equity within architectural education, we can fuel the designers of tomorrow with the necessary resources to assist and provide quality design that will allow people from marginalized communities to gain a positive relationship within their neighborhoods and their surrounding built environment. As a future architect, I view myself as a person who brings dreams to reality and mainly formulate my design ideation around the experiences I have lived these past 23 years. In the next 10 years post-graduation, I want to use my architectural knowledge to design temporary moments that convey how architecture is how we create temporary ‘worlds’ and leave the users inspired by the meaningful experiences that happened in the space. Not everyone has access to design a building, and if there were an alternate path for me, I believe it would be to focus on designing stages and fashion runways to demonstrate alternate paths for architecture students while they reach licensure status. The root to create this optimistic societal change begins with using architectural education as an opportunity to bring different socioeconomic groups together and address how equity can shape the built environment. Architecture should emphasize how humans inhabit and experience the built environment of everyday. Jerry Rodriguez, Print Lab Graduate Assistant M.ARCH Class of 2024

The proposal presented was to convert the utilitarian farm structures into a Destination Brewery Biersilo Brewing Co. is a destination craft brewery that takes a grouping of abandonded grain silos and are converted into a in-house brewery where local grain can be milled, fermented, into a classic beverage, then be bottled, packaged, and distributed while also providing a destination that would bring visitors from all over the Midwest, along with tourists who want to submerse themselves into Midwestern working culture. This urban development proposal aims to revitalize the community of South side Chicago and highlight the authenticity of black culture through a series of design goals that will encourage the community and the city of Chicago to bring the “urban buzz” while giving back to this historic region that has been marginalized. Using collective community input from 7th ward meeting as framework color coordinated strategies highlight design goals & spatial relationships. The concept behind the urban planning of this corridor was inspired from Southside Chicago being the birthplace of Jazz and the deep roots of music that runs through the city. The planning of the corridor would comprise of different architectural “notes” being placed to create a rhythm throughout the corridor along 95th Street.

The Gateway Community Center “The Wisconsin Latino Chamber of Commerce unveiled designs for its future business incubator called “The Gateway.” The 15,000 SF facility in Fitchburg, WI, will include classrooms, a commercial kitchen for training and food preparation, retail, and entrepreneurial spaces. Shive-Hattery Architectural Intern, Jerry Rodriguez, says, “I can’t express how much it means to be able to represent my culture and give back to the Hispanic community through design.” Rodriguez helped design the Tu Empresa business incubator where entrepreneurs will learn business skills and strategy in the state-of-the-art facility. The commercial kitchen, called Tu Cocina Food Hub, will serve as both a food preparation classroom and a resource for food businesses. The Gateway will also offer space for entrepreneurs to store equipment as they grow.” Excerpt from Shive-Hattery

Hip Hop Xpress Design + Build Project “The Hip-Hop Xpress is an internet-connected mobile classroom, recording studio, and performance venue that links communities across our state through a variety of programmed events and outreach initiatives. Inspired by George Washington Carver’s Jesup Wagon, Xpress travels to parks, community centers, schools, universities, and parking lots to spark connections among different generations, highlight Black cultural legacies, and invite young people to try new activities, all inspired by Hip Hop and its antecedents. Our team undertook a multi-year process of engagement with various community stakeholders, hosted participatory design charrettes, and toured the emptied bus to test a variety of functions. Three primary needs emerged from this process that helped shape WKH LQWHULRU FRQ¿JXUDWLRQ D JDWKHULQJ VSDFH IRU collaboration, a long multi-purpose workbench, and seating booths for more focused work. We envisioned the interior as a scaffolding that can evolve over time.” - Lead, Professor Kevin Erickson (not pictured)
