With Cades Cove and the surrounding countryside as his inspiration; Dick says, "landscape painting in the Great Smoky Mountains is a real experience, because the light in the mountains is filtered by the atmosphere, causing the colors to have a prismatic effect. Brenda is noted for her extraordinary ability to excel at portraits, landscapes, florals and animals with a realism that many can only dream of. She shares what she has learned about light, shadows, color, composition, foreground, background, detail and techniques to help nurture that style. Teaching allows Brenda to meet people and travel, two things she enjoys as much as painting. Brenda is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, exhibition chairperson for the International Association of Pastel Societies, a member of the Portrait Society of America, historian for the Great Lakes Pastel Society, member of the Southwest Florida Society, the Salmagundi Club of NYC and the Art Alliance. Ken Muenzenmayer works in acrylics on a textured surface fracturing the painted stroke into minute pieces and creating a visual blending and depth of color to create his paintings. He works in acrylics for their versatility and ready painting surface. They not only lend themselves to transparent glazes, but also, they convey an opaque character that create and enhance contrast. Through his layering of colors, he creates a luminosity, which captures not only the beauty of a landscape, but the spirit of the place as well. Ken Muenzenmayer’s paintings can be found in major corporate and private collections throughout the United States. His strong compositions and unique approach to acrylic painting has earned him numerous top awards.

Meet the Instructors
James Sulkowski www.jamessulkowski.com
Art of the Carolinas 2012
Mike Rooney www.mikerooneystudios.com I love to paint. I have painted all my life. But now I want to paint every single day. My style is very eclectic, never really following a set pattern. I like to go outside without a preconceived method or formula. I approach each painting differently and like to experiment, to shake things up a little. I'm a full-time plein air painter, deliberately choosing the outdoors to a comfortable studio. Bugs, pesky by-standers and bad weather are just a few of the inconveniences I endure to capture the colors and nuances of nature. My subject matter varies, but I love painting outside year round, near the coast from Cape Cod in the late summer, to Key West in the winter, and all points in between. They say paint what you love most. That's the coast, with its boats, marshes and architecture, etc., so I try to be there painting most of the time. I also love Charleston, SC and paint there often too. Sometimes a scene stops me in my tracks and I just have to paint it. This definitely requires a flexible schedule because spontaneity is crucial to a plein air artist. I want to have the ability to determine my own course in life and to paint the world, as I see it, everyday.

David and Eric have continued to provide workshops, presentations, and seminars to teachers, students, and artists throughout the country, and they have coauthored the best selling book, The Journal Junkies Workshop: Visual Ammunition for the Art Addict, published in 2010 by North Light Books.

Cynthia Winika Cynthia Winika is a multi-media artist who has shown her work in museums and galleries in the US and abroad. She is the principle encaustic instructor for R&F Handmade Paints and has been teaching nationally and internationally for over 15 years. She has received grants from the Women's Studio Workshop and the New York Foundation for the Arts. Her paintings and encaustic technical advice are featured in The Art of Encaustic Painting by Joanne Mattera. To view more of Cynthia's work, go to www.chelseaartgalleries.com. I have always been attracted to the saturation, sensuality, and mysterious veiled quality of beeswax based paintings; especially the Fayum mummy portraits. Painting, doing collage work, and printmaking, combined with the use of encaustic technique allows me a way of invigorating and combining these processes. This has led to my current work. I love the way I can subdue or clarify an underlying work by varying the number of wax applications. Layering with encaustic medium, scribing and filling incisions with oil paint to give a dry point look, creating multi-level, layered collages allows me to create a depth under my surface with an archeological quality, expressing the history of the process.
