Workshop Descriptions Thursday, November 12th
TH1501 Learning The Basics of Watercolor
9am-4pm TH1504 Big Brush Watercolor Landscapes
9am-12pm
Instructor: Mario Robinson $249 + Paint Fee ($17) = $266 Medium: Watercolors Skill level: All Sponsored by: Jerry’s Artarama
Instructor: Sterling Edwards Medium: Watercolor Skill level: All Sponsored by: Savoir Faire
The class will include a demonstration by the instructor, which will address color mixing, materials & how to avoid common mistakes. Students are encouraged to bring their own photo reference, which can include portraiture, landscape, still life, etc. Please draw your subject & stretch the paper, prior to the class to save time.*
In this three hour workshop, Sterling Edwards will explain and demonstrate how to paint an expressive watercolor landscape using mostly 1”, 2”, and 3” brushes, including the stiff bristle brushes that he designed. Sterling has been teaching this method of painting in his coast to coast and international workshops for years and has received rave reviews from his students.*
TH1502 Landscape Painting In Oil or Pastel Instructor: James Sulkowski Medium: Oil & Pastel Skill level: All Sponsored by: Sennelier
9am-4pm $249
Students can bring their own favorite photo to class and learn the principles of painting Light as it moves through Space and Atmosphere! Color progressions, skies, water, clouds and more will be taught and demonstrated. These are the concepts of the famed Hudson River School . Sennelier products are recommended for both oils and pastels in an assortment of colors, 12” x 16” up to 16” x 20” canvases or pastel papers, assorted brushes, oil painting medium and odorless paint thinner, paper towels and easel.*

TH1505 Soft as Velvet Florals
$129
9am-12pm
Instructor: Linda Kemp $129 + Kit Fee ($15) = $144 Medium: Watercolor Skill level: All Sponsored by: HK Holbein In this new program we will be exploring Holbein’s selection of specialty opaque watercolors. These soft, velvety-smooth colors are ideal for creating gossamer veils and creamy, exquisite passages that simply can’t be achieved with transparent pigments alone. You will also learn how to simplify your favorite flowers and use negative painting strategies to block in forms and establish patterns of meaningful shapes.*
TH1506 On Our Way To Real Portraits
9am-12pm
Instructor: Dan Nelson $129 Medium: Charcoal Skill level: All *AT RETAIL STO RE *
We all know that we should be doing our portraits from LIFE, not from photographs, but most of us have to endure a number of steep learning curves on our way to that lofty pinnacle of artistic achievement. Learning to capture a likeness is one of the most daunting of those curves. Dan Nelson has been chipping away at this cliff-face for many years, and has come up with some key foot-holds and grab-ons for scaling this wall.*
www.artofthecarolinas.com
TH1507 Jumpstart Your Imagination! 9am-12pm TH1510 Rendering the Elements Instructor: Kathie George $129 + Kit Fee ($10) = $139 of Nature Medium: Mixed Media
Skill level: All
In this fast paced class, Kathie will demo for the first hour or so: pouring, powdered dyes, fiber painting, monoprint, weaving, mirror image and other techniques. Then, in the remaining time, you may choose to concentrate on one project - or try them all! This high energy class will give you tons of ideas - all you have to do is go home and get started.*
9am-4pm
Instructor: Joe McGurl $249 + Paint Fee ($17) = $266 Medium: Oil or Acrylic Skill level: All Sponsored by: Jerry’s Artarama Rendering the elements is one of the most difficult aspects of landscape painting -- how to make a tree look like a tree and a cloud look like a cloud. To solve this problem, Joe has developed many techniques to replicate in paint the characteristics of the objects found in nature. This workshop will focus on more skillful use of the palette knife and brushes, manipulating the paint by varying its viscosity, and introducing the participating artists to a few unique tools that Joe has found extremely useful.*
TH1508 Drawing the Portrait from Life 9am-4pm Instructor: Paul McCormack Medium: Pencil Skill level: Intermediate
$249
Here is your opportunity to learn the primary foundation for all portrait work. This course is specifically designed for the portrait artist that seldom works from life or perhaps has been too intimidated to try. It is Paul’s belief that only by working and studying from life an artist will be able to tell truth from lie if the need to work from photographic reference arises. With instruction on the proper use of angles, plumb lines and relative measurement, students will learn how to acquire correct proportions in order to achieve a likeness of the model. With the inclusion of rendering techniques and the use of powdered graphite and denatured alcohol, you will learn how to draw and render form in a realistic fashion.*
TH1509 Develop Your Own Personal Color Scheme Instructor: Bob Rankin Medium: Acrylic Skill level: All
TH1511 Abstract Expressionist Process 9am-4pm Instructor: Joseph DiGiulio $249 + Paint Fee ($17) = $266 Medium: Acrylics Skill level: All Sponsored by: Matisse
Join Joe for this all day acrylic workshop where you will explore the four basic elements of line, shape, color and texture, and their use in abstract compositions. He will introduce you to his “process” in developing a well composed acrylic painting on canvas. Learn to create compositions using, transparent, dark and opaque colors to create positive and negative space as well as dramatic contrast in your work.*

A Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, award winning pastelist, Diana Coidan, has been an accomplished and experienced full time professional artist for over twenty five years. Although she works in many mediums, working in soft pastels is her most expressive, offering her the rich color, variety, and immediacy to paint her award-winning pastels. A Business College graduate, Diana retired from an administrative position to pursue her love for art. Self-taught and after many painting/pastel workshops with well-known instructors, she discovered her own pathway to expression in pastels and developed her own signature style with strikingly realistic results. Diana’s paintings focus on movement with various sky/cloud formations, rhythm of the sea in its many forms, marine life, or the like, all evident of her unconscious attraction to blue. Recognized by many well-known jurors in local, regional, state, and national level exhibitions, Diana has been awarded place and purchase awards for many of her pastel pieces. Her work can be found in private and corporate permanent art collections in the Raleigh area including Duke Health Raleigh Hospital and Wells Fargo Corporate Office permanent art collections. Judy Crane www.judycrane.com Judy is an avid oil painter, plein air painter, and workshop instructor. She has been a full time professional artist for over 20 years. She has studied with many wonderful painters like Kevin McPherson, Camille Przewodek, and Susan Sarback, and several of the Plein Air Painters of America. All of these artist instructors have influenced her work and helped to shape her into the artist and teacher she is today. In her teaching she tries to impart to her students what she has learned from the many instructors that she has studied with over many years. Judy is generous with her knowledge and strives to help each student individually as much as possible. She teaches a plein air style that is quick and yet deliberate. The focus is on shape, value, color and design. Her workshops “loosen up” the “tight” painter, placing emphasis on what is really important in a painting rather than the details. She has a teaching DVD, “Reflections of Nature,” that is available. She has traveled and painted in “plein air” on location in France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and many areas of the US. She paints in a manner that lets the viewer see the subject as the eye sees a scene, not in photographic focus, but with atmosphere and depth of field. She captures the sophisticated; lush colors of nature and of our man made environment, and presents them in a believable and exciting way. For the observer her work conveys a feeling of “being there.” Her works are included in many corporate collections, including SAS Institute, Glaxo Smith Klein, Duke University Medical Center, and Progress Energy. Her paintings are also featured in numerous hospitals, hotels and banks as well as many private collections.

Sterling Edwards www.sterlingedwards.com Sterling Edwards began painting at age twelve and has been actively engaged in art most of his life. Predominantly self taught, he has experimented with most mediums and has found that water based mediums such as watercolor and acrylics offer the greatest opportunity to express himself as an artist and offer the most flexibility. Over the last ten years Sterling has developed an expressive and interpretive style of painting that ranges from stylized and impressionistic to total abstraction. He still enjoys painting traditional landscapes however, and finds it a nice balance for his more creative paintings. In 1993 Sterling began teaching his style of painting at workshops throughout North Carolina where he now resides. As his reputation as an accomplished watermedia artist and teacher rapidly grew, he was requested to conduct workshops in neighboring states. Today, Sterling’s workshops are attended by hundreds of people annually throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He was a featured artist in the fall 2001 issue of Watercolor Magic Magazine in an article titled, “Ones to watch” and has been featured in numerous newspaper articles. In 2007 Sterling designed and introduced a signature set of watercolor brushes and a watercolor palette that are marketed internationally. He is a co-founder of the Rusty Nail Painters, an international invitation group of professional artists that meet every two years for an intense week of painting. In 2010 he was awarded signature membership status in the esteemed Transparent Watercolor Society of America. He is the author of the North Light book, “Creating Luminous Watercolor Landscapes, a Four Step Process”, published by F+W Publishing Company and is a contributing artist in numerous other magazines and books. Today Sterling’s book, signature line of products, and instructional DVDs are marketed worldwide. Dick Ensing www.dickensingartist.com Dick Ensing, owner of the Dutchman’s Loft studio, paints in the tradition of the French impressionist. With Cades Cove and the surrounding countryside as his inspiration; Dick says, "landscape painting in the Great Smoky Mountains is a real experience, because the light in the mountains is filtered by the atmosphere, causing the colors to have a prismatic effect. This creates a mood that captivates the feeling and beauty of Gods’ awesome power.” As the 5th generation grandson of the legendary Dutch painter Adrian VanDer Werf (1659-1722), Dick values his heritage, as Adrian was the most famous painter of his day and achieved a high level of academic perfection in all his work, even surpassing Rembrandt, who died when Adrian was 10 yrs. old. Dick has studied art with Robert Brackman, Madison Ct., William Schultz , Lenox Mass., Herb Abrams, Washington Ct., and portraiture with Illona Ross, Smithkin, N.Y. He has taught art at Arrowmount School of Art, Walters State College, and given workshops at many colleges and art leagues. Presently Dick does workshops for Jerry's Artarama, Cheapjoes Art Supplies and the Dutchmans Loft. Along with Dicks’ other accomplishments, he has a degree in engineering and plays jazz as a hobby. I grew up traveling the world and living in faraway lands with my family. I visited museums across the world, and soaked in images of the landscapes I was fortunate enough to travel. My art developed out of these experiences, with an eye towards texture and abstraction. My paintings have a minimal and literal landscape element, while I try to capture and convey the textures of life. The experience of painting is a great escape from the complexities of life, and I always find myself creating an abstract scene of peacefulness, relaxation, and calmness. . I’m drawn to water, the sea, the ocean, and these feelings show up in my abstract landscapes. I paint with oils and wax medium, on canvas, gessoed hardboard, and paper. I’m able to create multiple layers of translucent colors, and through the process of scratching, distressing, and dissolving, I’m able to capture depth and feeling within the painting. With each painting, I start with no end game. I allow the painting to develop and see where it leads.

Carol Nelson is an award winning mixed media artist from Colorado. Her work is characterized by vibrant color, strong brushwork, and abundant textures from a variety of mediums and collage materials added to her work. Carol loves painting realistically in oils, but her main creative outlet comes from working in acrylics and mixed media. Early in her art development, Carol took numerous workshops with master artists, but it is her willingness to experiment with paints and materials that has led to the development of her mixed media techniques.

Dan Nelson www.dannelsonart.com If you combine three parts painter, two and a half parts musician, a pound or two of inventor, and a heaping tablespoon of show-off… you just might come up with a Dan Nelson, Art Adventurer Extraordinaire. Dan made his living for decades as a freelance illustrator, winning competitions in everything from street painting to sand sculpture. At the same time he began mesmerizing audiences by producing 8-by-10-foot masterpieces in the streets and parks of Raleigh, North Carolina, his hometown. Besides setting up his plein air easel anywhere from California to France, Dan spends much of his time doing Live Art Performances in cities large and small, painting at festivals, concerts, and fundraisers. He has painted for the NC Symphony, the Carolina Hurricanes, IBM, Glaxo Smith Kline, and many of the major Corporations across the Triangle and beyond.

James Sulkowski www.jamessulkowski.com
Mario Robinson www.marioarobinson.com Robinson’s finished works bear a close affinity to the masters of the realist tradition, Andrew Wyeth and Thomas Eakins. Containing few references to modern life, Robinson’s work has a timeless and universal quality and exhibits a turn- of- the- century aesthetic. The images he chooses, which refer to a bygone era where solitude and reflection were abundant, also provoke frequent allusions to the paintings of Winslow Homer and Edward Hopper. Beginning in 1994, Robinson’s work began to extensively incorporate rural subjects primarily located in Alabama. Each subject is very personal for the artist in both selection and execution. As the work progresses, his relationship with the sitter develops and a uniquely personal story begins to evolve. Robinson frequently depicts subjects framed within the context of their daily lives. The underlying narrative counters sentimentality and serves as the underpinning for his figurative images.
Mario’s Workshops: TH1501, FR1501
He studied for two years at the Pennsylvania Academy of fine Arts in Philadelphia, Carnegie Mellon University and most notably at The Art Students League of New York with master painter, Frank Mason. It was during his five years of study with Mr. Mason that Sulkowski learned the concepts and techniques of the great masters. In 1979, Mr. Sulkowski, in collaboration with his twin brother, Joseph, was commissioned by the Saudi Arabian government to paint two murals, five feet by twelve feet, commemorating and depicting two important historic highlights of Saudi history. One, the Scientific and Mathematical Achievements of the Saudi Arabians, and two, The Ikhwan Revolt of 1929. These large canvases were completed in 1980 and hang in the King Abdul Aziz Naval Museum in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. In 1994, James opened the SULKOWSKI ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS in Houston, Pa., where he teaches the concepts and techniques of classical painting. Mr. Sulkowski continues to exhibit widely and is currently represented by: DASSIN GALLERY in Los Angeles, GODWIN & LUNDQUIST FINE ART GALLERY in Massachusetts, and SULKOWSKI FINE ART GALLERY in Canonsburg, Pa.
James’s Workshops: TH1502, FR1502, SA1502, SU1502
Mike Rooney www.mikerooneystudios.com Mike Rooney prefers painting outside to a comfortable studio. Bugs, bystanders and bad weather are just a few of the inconveniences he endures to capture the colors and nuances of his coastal subjects. He has painted in one form or another since childhood, and was once a sign painter and airbrush artist. Rooney also teaches painting workshops up and down the east coast and in Italy. Painting in oil, Rooney’s subject matter varies, but he loves to show the effect of light on water, boats, and the beach environment from the salt marshes of Cape Cod and rugged coast of Maine, to the mangroves and turquoise waters of Key West. Mike is also a painting instructor teaching up and down the east coast and abroad. He has also filmed several how-to DVDs on painting with brush and painting knives. The blurs of color Mike Rooney paints on-site are recognizable as boats, beach houses, and seas and they desire the great outdoors as much as the painter himself.

She is the founder of ACT, Artist Changing Tomorrow and was a part and invitation group of 50 artists and one of the three watercolorists whose works toured as part of the national museum exhibition, “Sea to Shining Sea.” Ms. Vernon’s paintings are a unique presentation of traditional watercolor on Aquabord.
