Professional Experience
2013 Jerryt.nl Owner. As freelance designer I enjoy the freedom to join assignments who have my interest. It is an opportunity to think broader and work together with other (type of ) designers in teams and join assignments with assignment-specific specialistst. www.jerryt.nl 2013 Must urban design, Amsterdam Assistant designer/ trainee. Supporting role on design and research on declining areas and regional design in The Netherlands. Must is one of the few offices in The Netherlands who is specialized in urban design and integral design. Their wellknown for their researches on national scale and the ability to translate research results to clear graphics. www.must.nl
2013 Fokkema & Partners, Delft Assistant Designer. Task: supporting the three designteams drawing, research and presentation make up in an office specialized in interior architecture. I was involved in different projects on interior design for different headquarters of multinational companies. www.fokkema-partners.nl 2012 Studio Marco Vermeulen, Rotterdam Assistant designer/ trainee. I worked independently on projects in a team of three people, including Marco Vermeulen. We worked on mostly on research and designs for sustainability on a urban level, urban agriculture, the regeneration of businessparks, water security plans in the river delta of The Netherlands and the renewal for a river delta museum. All plans were designed in an interdisciplinary team, each one of us had a different approach or profession, what made us an interesting partner in the design process. Architecture, urban design and landscape design were integrated in all plans. www.studiomarcovermeulen.nl 2011 Plein06, Rotterdam Assistant designer, in a team of four people. The combination of landscape architecture, urban design and planning made this office ideal for designing in complex urban situations and larger areas throughout the city. We designed different parks, a new built factory terrain and diverse countryside housing areas. We worked mostly independent, in case of deadlines or lack on inspiration we joined ventures and discussed/ worked together. A competition I worked on won the first prize in 2012. www.plein06.nl 2010 -2011 BFAS, Amsterdam Assistant designer at Bentvelsen Fleer architecture and urbanism. My main task was to support the urbanism team with drawing, presentations, planning agenda’s, guiding trainees and designing. BFAS is an office specialized in new built areas and Newtown planning for over ten years. The mix architecture and urbanism made BFAS a strong office throughout all stages of the design process. We could deliver master plans and technical information in once. Besides of that we worked also as moderator during the process with different parties. One of the most important parts in these processes was guiding the collaboration with neighbouring people and new inhabitants on one hand and the municipality and landowners/ developers on the other hand. www.bf-as.nl Internships 2010
JUURLINK [+] GELUK and CULD, Rotterdam Trainee/ graduate. Juurlink and Geluk is famous for their solutions and designs in complex urban areas. The interrelation urbanism and designing from a landscapearchitectural approach made them a unique office to work for. When they offered me a graduation project on a regeneration project in Abu Dhabi, I could not deny to join. During half a year I worked for the joint venture CULD with two other offices on the masterplan for Al Shahama in Abu Dhabi. We had to make a growth model for this neighbourhood, counting 25.000 inhabitants. The focus of the plan was to redesign the existing neighbourhood and expand it to house all 125.000 future inhabitants. We worked on three types of plans for the same masterplan: a 2015 minimal intervention plan, a 2030 medium developed urbanization plan and a 2080 high
urbanized area. For CULD I helped on density studies and designing the minimal intervention plan, the 2080 model became my own graduation project where I worked independently on. In fact I worked on two plans at once. My graduation project was published in architecture magazine ‘De Blauwe Kamer’ in 2010. www.jeng.nl 2009 VISTA landscape & urban design, Amsterdam Trainee. Working for this office gave me the opportunity to develop myself in large scale landscape architecture and designing from the underlaying landscape. Retrospectively this office created an awareness to always look with a wider scope then just your study case. They learned me to look to landscape in another way and introduced me in the world of politics and meetings. During these meetings I learned a lot about politics, planning strategies on national and provincial scale. Vista is an extraordinary office which has an big knowledge on ecology, biology, landscape architecture and urbanism. They created crossovers in between all professions, what makes them special. www.vista.nl 2008 BFAS Amsterdam Trainee. A four months during traineeship in an architect and urban design office. I worked on diverse projects with different tasks during this traineeship. It was my first encounter with the practise in the working field. www.bf-as.nl

PROJECT
Competition for primary school cluster
SCALE/ SIZE
Exterior, public space design 1:100, 1:50
ASSIGNMENT
Three primary schools and a day-care want to make a fusion in one new building. In a closed competition I was asked by Thijs van Hees to join for the exterior design. The dense programme made it almost impossible to create nice spaces. All the available space would be needed to create parkingspace. With simple design solutions we tried to make the space more flexible, larger and safe. By creating for example height differences in the paved surfaces we bordered the carspace from pedestrian ares.

SCALE/ SIZE
Landscape/ urban/ regional 1:10000
ASSIGNMENT Competition for the future perspective on energy and energystreams in 2050. Our goal in the competition was to close energy streams by linking areas to eachother. Our plan was based on the knowledge of ARUP engineers we invited during the design process. Our mapping analasys came together with their knowlegde on energy and technical knowlegde. EXPERIENCES Knowledge about energy, energystreams, metabolism on urban scale, measurements on energy efficiency, biobased energy, the value of energy etc. Linking available scientific research data to a designproposal. Research by mapping Relations between different users and exciters of energy
20
In combination with the energy experts of ARUP we came to this final drawing. The strenght of the proposal lays in the use of existing networks and unused strengths and weaknesses in the area. This way of planning would reduce a new investment to a minimum.

2011 BFAS Schuytgraaf veld4 Arnhem PROJECT
Newtownplanning Schuytgraaf, field 4 development
SCALE/ SIZE
Urban/ architecture 1:1000/ 1:500
ASSIGNMENT During my internship I already worked on this project, it became my major project during my intership. Two years later, when I started working for BFAS, this project was still going on because of the crisis. Before BFAS was involved in this project, project architects and developers made several mistakes. They already start building the project before the municipality gave her permission to start building. The project ended up in a mess, the parties who were involved leaved the project and the masterplanners of the overall development of Schuytgraaf had to look for a new team to develop Veld 4. BFAS was asked in 2008 to create a new plan, on the already build sewagesystems and streetfundaments. In 2010 the project was still a mess, money became a more and more big issue, because they had to do the planning and designfase twice. But the designteam went on. BFAS had the mainrole as supervisor and had to finish the project with the projectarchitect and landscape architect in February 2011. During the year I worked for BFAS, this project became more and more my project. I played a keyrole in the communication between parties and I had to devide the tasks in the designteam. EXPERIENCES

Homeless young adults housing project
SCALE/ SIZE
Architecture 1:500/ 1:200
ASSIGNMENT
The assignment was part of the studio ‘Architect as social entrepreneur’. Higher Ground Boston pointed me on the issue of homeless young adults and the fact they have no chance to make the next step in life via work of study. The project goes further than just providing shelter. I should also provide a program so they can grow out of the position as homeless youngster and start being self sufficient.
21 year old male Confrontation with Mother’s new boyfriend about smoking (marijuana in the apartment around younger siblings & jeopardizing the family’s living situation in public housing complex) led to physical fight. The mother of this young man sided with new boyfriend and kicked the young man from the apartment. Now, he is sleeping wherever he can, sometimes putting himself in potentially threatening places.
EXPERIENCES Ingrated design Always think on citysscale Financing strategies
21 year old male Left his home around age 17. Since then his single-parent has been overcome with debilitating illnesses. The sick parent moved in with her siblings only to find out that the sibling sold the house & left the state. His ailing mother now lives in an assisted living home leaving this young man homeless.
20 year old female Left an abusive home at age 13. Since leaving that home, her mother passed away and father is/was serving a jail sentence leaving this young woman homeless. She currently lives with her boyfriend’s family where she still faces similar challenges.
21 year old male
19 year old male His mom has a history of homelessness. After he left the DSS/DCF homes he has since been arrested for a number of charges and the only family willing to take him in has recently been evicted. The family still occupies the house but fears that any day they will be forced out onto the street.
28
Left a home tainted by drug abuse & domestic violence to live with relatives down south. After completing high school he moved back to Boston only to find his father in jail and his mother seemingly ‘disappeared’. Nevertheless, he is back living in the same environment he needed to escape.

NOMADIC MOVEMENTS
MY NEIGHBORHOOD AS A CAMPUS
Monthly movents of youngsters, looking for a place to stay for the night.
What if the neighborhood was your campus? What if the neighborhood could provide you access to the same facilities as the dormitories for the more lucky people in society? How can we create a local shared economy?
29
The term ‘shared space’ is mostly defined by sharing food and the use of the kitchen. Food connects people, cultures lifestyles and could be a way to communicate that. Dining together and preparing food together is important for the social coherence in the building. It is the first entrance in the house. The smell of food can spread via the corridors and invites other people to join the daily dining and cooking rituals. The students don’t have a separate living room, so they will always be using the space.
WHERE DO YOU MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS?
30
The other shared spaces are of course the exterior spaces and corridors. The covered entrances are inviting people to come in and use the entrance to smoke or hang out like in a veranda. The entrances should invite people and introduce the semi public sphere from the streets. The people who live in the building share books, laptops, tools, cooking equipment and bikes. The higher incomes are supporting the lower incomes or students in the building. Their financial contribution to the shared used goods is bigger than the other incomes in the building.
31
ACCESSING AND ENTRANCES
N 0
N 1:200 0
How you access the building and your house is essential for the experience. You have to enter the shared space first, before you come home. But home still should feel like home, a protected area for yourself. This project combines the search for a balance in shared spaces and a mix of lifestyles in the same building.
32

Light is essential in the corridors and the main central space. The openings in the ceilings of the corridors are guiding you to the big central space, that is lighted by big openings in the roof. Light guides you through the building and helps you find your way.

Maybe the direct environment could support the building and youth program not in a financial way only, but also with material donations or smart cooperation like heat exchange. Schools are maybe only used during day times and could provide a perfect study environment after 6 pm. Big businesses and public buildings could exchange heat for instance or donate electricity monthly. The support is not given in money but via another way. Services and materials is what youngster really need. They need to grow back in society and built up a new life from this program. It could be helpful to think of new smart collectives and connections to save costs and expenses. 33

• Personal traffic will increase and be more affordable • Increase of trade and number of consumers • Now the trafficsystems is road related traffic. For personal traffic and cargo, for short distance and long distance. • Bagamoyo harbour will change the focus of the traffic in the city
WASTE • With more traffic, pollution wil increase. • People cook on charcoal • Consumer economy with an increasing middle class incomes will change the products packaging and number of kilos of waste every person produce. • More people more waste
FOOD ACCESS • A different consumer economy with increasing middle class incomes will change the type of and peoples diets • People will eat more meat when there incomes increase • Urban farming will be less important and gradually pushed out the city. • The foodrelation with the countryside will be more important. The city will more and more rely on this relation
HOUSING • With a changing income people will have more m2 per person • The family structures will change with a changing economy, people will have less childeren and on a bigger house and a bigger plot • Coming 30 years Tanzania will have a young aged population
HEALTH, HYGIENE AND SAFETY • Dar Es Salaam has benefits of its position along the coast, but also the disadvantage in terms of floods during the monsoon • Polluted air is mainly caused by the charcoal stoves used at home and the stop and go traffic. Fluent traffic can avoid more pollution • Hygiene: 10% is connected to a sewege

Density studies probided valuable information about landuse and the use of plots during the last century. The oldest plots are the most dense ones. The row of images shows that there was a certain need to expand houses during the last 50 years (since Abu Dhabi discovered oil). The reason for the expansiosn can be found in the familystructures of Abu Dhabi people. They live with three generations family on the same plot, that is why plots have to be adapted and expanded every generation.
The new coastal (Bahia) developments
Build in de late 70’s
60
Another important finding was that Abu Dhabi neighborhoods have 33% percent of unused public space. The big gaps in between plots are mainly used for local traffic. When you give the 33% percent of unused space away for development of excisting housing, a major part of the growth of the city can be caught in the excisting neighborhoods, just with expanding in the unused spaces.
