2020 Jersey Australia AGM

Chris said the initiative continued to pay dividends for the breed.

“Absolutely, it was the right way to go,” he said. “It gave Jerseys recognition and proper representation in the industry; we became a national body and we were accepted as such. We get to places now that we weren’t able to before.

“Trevor leaves a lasting legacy, there’s no doubt about that.”

Chris said Trevor’s contribution continued over the years, including representing Jersey Australia on a number of industry groups and committees, playing a leading role in setting up Dairy House, bringing together Jersey Australia, Holstein Australia and DataGene, and as Oceania vice-president for the World Jersey Cattle Bureau.

And he always does his bit to promote the breed.

“When he comes back from the world conferences, he always says we have the best Jerseys right here in Australia,” Chris said.

During the years of working together, Chris has been impressed by Trevor’s willingness to express his opinion on various topics.

“He’s always out to help Jerseys in whatever way he can. He brought Jersey Australia into reality and should be proud of his role in such a great milestone.” Around the Grounds 2020 AGM

STANDING UP FOR ALL MEMBERS Former Goulburn Valley farmer and Jersey Australia life member Peter Farrell said Trevor Saunders was willing to fight for what was best for the breed and for general members…. and didn’t mind stepping on a few toes.

“History will show the reason we have Jersey Australia is because of Trevor,” Peter said.

“He came in as an outsider and stood up for the general members. He wasn’t from a traditional Jersey background but he had the guts to stand up to some of the older members.”

The process of forming Jersey Australia started at a Federal Council meeting in Queensland. “We didn’t like what was happening and thought the whole structure of the Jersey Society was all fractured,” Peter said.

“After that meeting, we came back to Victoria and started working on the process of forming Jersey Australia, even if other states didn’t want to come with us.

“Victoria changed its name to Jersey Australia and basically forced the other states to follow. We had the main office because the majority of members were in Victoria but all the states had their own societies.

“We put in place a structure that we took to the other states. Trevor was the main driver; It was his baby from the start and it was fitting that he was the first chairman.

“For someone who came from outside the normal Jersey structure, he has done a wonderful job.”

Peter said that Trevor worked well with former executive officer Scott Joynson is establishing the Jersey Australia structure. “He was smart financially and helped put JA in a very good position.”

Peter said Trevor was forceful but smart in his approach and also very passionate.

“Trev was extremely passionate about the Jersey cow and this showed in every meeting we would go to, even industry meetings.

“He came in pretty cold and knew nothing about the politics and he basically took them front on.

“He’d go in hard first, then back off. He’d want the middle ground but would go in his way first, then comes back to that middle ground, which is what he wanted so he always wins.”

Peter retired from farming 12 years ago but maintains interest in the industry, keeping in touch with his former Goulburn Valley Jersey branch members and attending Jersey Australia’s annual conferences whenever possible. Removal of Syndicates
