Post Swim Hair Care Swimming is an amazing workout for your body, but it can cause of a lot of damage on your hair. If you swim regularly, your hair can become dry and damaged leaving you with swimmer’s hair. Swimmer’s hair develops because of the constant exposure to the chemicals in the pool such as chlorine and bromine. These chemicals react with the sebum and oils (that are there to protect your hair) and your cuticle becomes exposed. Once the cuticle is exposed, other chemicals to react with your hair especially copper compounds, which can leave your hair with the never flattering greenish tint. If you are swimming outside, damage from the sun’s ultraviolet rays will break up the bonds in the hair leading to damage and split ends. Chlorine also affects the pigment molecules in the hair, which can lead to hair color becoming lighter or color fading. But not to worry, you can still splash around because we’re going to help you prevent swimmer’s hair and how to treat it. The best way to prevent swimmer’s hair is to keep the pool water from soaking into your hair. The best way to prevent this is to wear a swimmer’s cap. These can be purchased at your sporting goods store or online. However, limiting your hair’s exposure to the water will help too. Try not getting your hair wet but wearing a bun or high ponytail, but it is important to note that the occasional dip in the pool here and there will not damage your hair. Also, if you cannot shampoo your hair after swimming the best option is to rinse your hair with fresh water to remove as much as the chlorine water from your hair as you can. Follow the rinse with a good leave in conditioner to seal your ends and keep them moisturized. If your hair is just colored or permed it is highly recommended to keep your hair away from the pool water for the first week of having that service performed. This

goes especially true for blondes and those with Brazilian keratin treatments. The chemicals in the pool water can alter the appearance and color of these two services so be very careful how much you are exposing your hair too if you have get these services done. There are also special shampoos that you can purchase that can help prevent swimmer’s hair and these include a clarifying shampoo. One of my personal clarifying shampoos is Scruples Clarifying Shampoo. If you have color treated or keratin treatment in your hair I recommend Moroccan Oil Clarifying Shampoo as it is sulfate free and will not affect your chemically treated hair. You can use these shampoos once a week or after you swim. Also make sure to be using a hair mask one to two times a week to bring back the moisture back into the hair. I also suggest getting a good leave in conditioner that you can use after the pool to keep the hair hydrated and protected. In addition, there are UVA/UVB Hair sprays that are designed to protect the hair against the sun rays and prevent color fading. An amazing hair car line for active swimmers is the Malibu Swimmer’s Water Action Wellness Shampoo and Conditioner. Our hair is our best accessory and also takes the most abuse. By following these simple tips you can get an amazing workout or enjoy being pool side and still have gorgeous locks.

Spring has sprung and with that comes getaways, vacations and Spring Break! Traveling these days comes with a lot of rules and regulations on what products you can bring, how much, the size etc. So, here at JerseyFashionista we have taken the guesswork out so that you can have your glam bag and get through security with no problems.

Tips to Pack Beauty Products Like a Pro Stefanie Savino

Tip #1: Make a list First step is to assess your situation. You ask yourself questions such as: “How long am I going away for?”, “What will the hotel have that I do not need to bring?” etc. If you are going away for more than ten days I suggest purchasing your shampoo and conditioner and bringing it with you in your suitcase. I put all beauty products in Ziploc bags to ensure that if there is any spillage it does not get on my clothes. If the choices of hair care products do not bother you than feel free to use the products that the hotel will provide. Most hotels will provide shampoo, conditioner, body wash or bar soap, and lotion in the room upon your arrival so these items are not necessary when packing your toiletry bag. In regards to hot tools this is where you really have to decide on what you are bringing. For myself I do not like hotel blow dryers … they have little to no power, have no concentrators on the nozzle so my hair frizzes and I just love my Elchim blow dryer I take it everywhere. You can double check with the hotel to see if the room comes with a blow dryer and then decide from. To cut down on items decide the temperature and climate of where you are traveling to see if you will really need and use your flat iron and/or curling irons. It is also important to note should be traveling outside the USA to bring the proper international outlets so you can use your hot tools. Tip #2: Decide What You Are Going to Bring Remember most hotels do have a store therefore you do not always need to weigh your suitcase with products such as tanning lotions, sunscreen, etc. This all depends in what you like to use, your budget and what you feel you need. Decide what makeup you will want to bring. You do not need to bring everything!! Think about a basic day makeup look, which usually consists of tinted moisturizer, mascara, liner and some bronzer. For your night look bring some darker, matte shadows to add some drama to your eyes, and a blush. A lipstick and two glosses is all you need. Try to bring dual-purpose products such as a highlighter that you can use as an eye shadow and blush. Tip #3: Remember the TSA 3 in 1 Rule TSA only allows 3.4 ounce or less bottles (100ml) of all liquids, aerosols, and gels that are enclosed in one quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag per passenger to be carried on board. In other words, unless you are packing your beauty products in your checked luggage, you need to purchase travel-sized products or refillable plastic containers. These containers are sold everywhere from Target, Bed, Bath and Beyond, and the Container Store. Tip #4: Samples Now is the perfect time to go to your local makeup counters or Sephora and ask for samples of beauty products you wish to bring with you. They often have fragrance samples; mascaras and lip products that you can bring that are very small and great for travel. Remember to pack smart, pack what you really need and want and that there are stores there should you not be able to fit something or you forget something. Use multi – purpose products and pack your products in between your clothes and away from items that can puncture holes such as shoes or combs. Most of all remember to have fun and enjoy your trip! “Weight loss is a journey, not a destination.”

Meet Jackie Shaheed: Business Woman. Wife. Mother. Teacher. Jackie is no ordinary woman. She has an inspiring story and an incredible journey to share. We nominated this amazing mommy to feature in honor of Mother’s Day. Shasheed struggled with her weight her entire life. After the birth of her third daughter, she found herself at 375 pounds and with health issues. It was then, she realized she needed to do something. Jackie decided to get a personal trainer, nutritionist, and join Weight Watchers. While she was able to loose 100 pounds, she became bored with the same old routine. It was Jackie’s trainer who encouraged her to try different exercise classes. One Zumba class later and Jackie was hooked. 7 days per week, sometimes twice a day- and 100 pounds less. Her love for Zumba was so great, she became a certified instructor in 2009. And that was only the beginning of Jackie’s journey. From shedding her old clothes on the Oprah Winfrey Show, being featured on the Today Show, and leaving her job to start her own FitPalz business; Jackie Shasheed is unstoppable and that’s why we thought you too should get to know her... JF: What made you get into Zumba?

33

Jackie: I was of the machines at the gym, so I joined a different gym that offered group fitness classes. I love to dance so I tried Zumba and it was definitely love at first dance!! I never felt the hour pass and I was soaking wet when I left. JF: Do you do any other type of work out or dieting? Jackie: I try to stay away from all processed food and eat clean now. I also strength train at least once a week. I am a personal trainer as well so I’m usually busy training others so I have to make sure I make time for my own workouts. JF: What was your inspiration to loose weight? What did you find most difficult/challenging about achieving your goal? Jackie: My family was my inspiration to lose weight. When I was 200 pounds heavier, I could barely get off the couch to play with the girls or to do anything. My father died of a heart attack when I was younger, so my motivation was to be healthy so I can be a part of my girls lives. The most challenging was the daunting amount of weight I needed to lose and I felt like it was never ending. I took it in 50 pound increments rather then looking at everything I needed to lose. Even after reaching my goal I can’t believe how much I have to continue to work to keep it off. So it’s very true, weight loss is a journey not a destination. JF: What advice would you give someone wanting to loose weight? Jackie: At FitPalz I coach my clients everyday. And in order for someone to want to lose weight they first have to want it and believe they can do it. Then I support them with all the tools, learning about why their bodies react a certain way when they don’t eat healthy and the importance of fitness in their lives.

JF: What has been your greatest accomplishment as a Zumba instructor? Personally? Jackie: Because if my personal weight loss journey becoming a Zumba instructor means so much more because anyone I am able to inspire anyone with a weight issue. I have helped so many people who never thought they could do it lose weight. Zumba has provided me with that outreach to be able to touch so many peoples lives. Also, I have helped several become instructors, even my daughter just got certified and is teaching and will hopefully continue to lead a healthy lifestyle. JF: How do you balance staying fit, running a business and a family? Jackie: Multi-tasking is an understatement!!! My husband travels constantly so I am always juggling. My family is my priority, and owning my own business is so overwhelming but so satisfying that I am truly blessed. I work so hard to juggle and balance and I think what helps is setting goals and keeping myself organized with what needs to be accomplished. With my business I was so involved with helping others lose weight that I forgot about myself and in 2013, I gained back about 20 pounds!! I made it a priority in January 2014, to focus on my own health again and I’m so happy to say I have lost that weight and an really working hard to maintain and to never lose sight of my own health. So many women often do for others and forget about themselves. But what I have learned is that if you take care of yourself and you are happy, then you can do for your loved ones.

Drop a Lemon In It

Looking for a fresh tasty way to spice up your water and give you good health benefits in one? Just add a lemon. The lemon contains natural vitamins that are helpful to things like your immune system, digestive system, and even your skin! It helps with gas, bloating, acid reflux, indigestion, cramping, and more. Lemons kill bacteria, for this reason when drinking lemon water; your toxins are cleansed (through peeing!). It’s best to have a full glass in the a.m. to help you start your day. You can drink a cup in the evening too after dinner. I take mine at room temperature but it’s best when warm. Add cucumber slices and it’s even healthier! This combo contains many of the essential vitamins and minerals the body needs in order to function. Lots of vitamin C and nutrients that help aid inflammation such as arthritis and rheumatism, and dry skin. It’s a cheap way to keep you beautiful and healthy inside out! 1 glass of water 2 thin slices of cucumber 2 thin slices of lemon Drink it at room temperature or chilled for a refreshing drink in the summer! Got extra lemons & cucumbers? Here are some ideas… 1) Keep a full pitcher in the fridge 2) Place the cucumbers on your eyelids to reduce bags and under eye circles 3) Give yourself a mani/pedi with lemons (use them to scrub your hands/feet, leaves them extra clean and soft!)

Are You Wearing the Right Bra Size? Are you among the 80% of women wearing the wrong size bra? Wearing the right size and style of bra not only provides comfort and confidence to women, but also promotes breast health, Essential Bodywear's bra fit Specialist provides you with the help you need to decide on the right fit you need to add wonders to your figure. Here are some Quick tips to help you figure out if the bra you are currently wearing is the right size for you. 1. The band of your bra should always fit snug around you. If you can put more than 2 fingers between the band and your back the size is too big. FYI that is the number portion of the bra size. 2. When you purchase your bra you should always wear it on the hook that is farthest out. If the bra you are wearing is on the tightest hook right out of the box it is at least 1 size too large. That way as you wear the bra you will get longer use by making it tighter over time. 4. Your band should not be riding up your back so that you need to keep pulling it down (YOUR BAND IS TOO BIG). 5. Do your straps fall off? If they do did you try to adjust the length of them (I know that seems obvious) if you have not try making the length smaller. 6. Ok now this is the part we all cringe over THE CUP size... if you answered yes to any of the questions about the band and you are wearing a bra that band is too big guess what ladies when the number gets smaller the cup (letter ) is going to go up. 7. If you are bulging out of the top of your bra and look almost like you have more than you should the CUP is too Small. I know what you are all thinking " I have always worn a size ___ fill in the blank " but if you answered Yes you may not be wearing that size any more. As women we are always very conscious of those darn Numbers on our Clothes, on the scale, and calories of our food. I am asking you not to worry about the size on the bra because no one is ever going to come up to you and say let me see the tag and nothing feels better than looking your best and the key to that is the right fitting undergarments and NO ONE ever needs to know what the label says. Looking Fab for Less After a long, cold winter, it’s really great that the enjoyable weather has finally arrived! Recently, I visited one of my favorite shopping destinations TJMaxx in order to peruse the isles and score fashionable deals. Like most women, I appreciate quality merchandise, but I appreciate it even more when what I’m looking for is on sale! I was immediately drawn to this gorgeous Maxi Dress in hues of blue and sand by Cynthia Rowley. The maxi-dress style is a piece that can be dressed up or down with the addition or subtraction of accessories. I chose to wear this gorgeous seascape necklace by Charming Charlie and I think it added a whimsical touch. I also accented my look with a gold braided belt, it adds a Grecian feel to the outfit and it also adds dimension. By pairing the dress with sandals or heels you can change the feel of the look. On this particular day, I chose an embellished sandal. If I had been attending a dressier occasion, I could easily have paired this dress with my DVF cross strap heels. To add a classic touch, since there was enough going on with the dress and statement necklace, I opted for a cream quilted chain handbag for a slightly elegant feel. A swipe of lip gloss and a dash of my favorite Urban Decay Naked Flushed bronzer and I was ready for the sunshine filled day!

Her family knew she had to be sent to dance school and she has been dancing ever since. Sienicki has had an exciting journey as a performer coming out in shows including America's Got Talent, Superbowl XXXIV, Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Dancing With the Stars, Project Runway, America's Got Talent, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Ellen De Generas Show, The Martha Stewart Show, Live! JF: Describe yourself in 3 words. CS: Spontaneous, adventurous, fun JF: What inspires you? CS: Everything around me gives me inspiration, especially nature. The sky, the moon, the stars, a rainbow, flowers, the ocean, the wind, etc. Nature is just so beautiful and powerful. When the sun is out and you feel the rays across your face or when you are on the beach standing in the ocean and you feel the strength behind every wave that crashes at your feet. It's a beautiful thing. It makes me appreciate so much. Nature can always nurture and revitalize you. JF: What advice can you give others in the performing arts field? CS: Doing anything in the arts whether it's dancing, acting, or whatever else, is never an easy career choice. You have to be a very strong person to take on all the criticism and rejection that comes with picking this career choice and doing what you love. You have to stay strong, you can't let someone's opinion keep you from achieving your goals. You have to remember that someone's opinion is just their opinion and not everyone else's. You have to constantly work hard, stay determined, practice constantly and just always give 100% and do your best. JF: What is your ultimate career goal? What has been your most exciting moment in your career? CS: I don't really have an ultimate career goal. I have accomplished a lot in my career already and am so thankful for that. I constantly strive to be the best I can be and just let the pieces fall where they may. And I have been extremely fortunate and lucky in that department. I just do what makes me happy so that I can feel fulfilled and enjoy life to it's fullest.

Spring into Fashion By Mariela Rodriguez & Lillie Morales Spring is here and new styles have arrived. Not sure which way to go to stay on trend? Let us guide you into spring fabuoulisty!

Spring Colors

Pastel colors like lilac, coral, pink, yellow, green, and blue are colors to choose from for your clothes this season. If you’re not into pastels, neons are also in. And you don’t need to go head to toe with pastels or neons. You can use accessories paired with neutral colors like black, white, even denim.

Shoes

Lizzie platform sandal, Mulberry

53

2014 has brought back chunky platform shoes and heels of the 70’s. Nervous about trying them out? Don’t be. Platform shoes are actually more comfortable than stilettos and they come in all heights. From flats to heels, there’s a style for everyone. It’s always good to try new things, you might just love them!

Crop Tops

Yes, you can wear this. No matter what your size, the crop top is for all. Showing your navel is not required. Simply show some skin between your waist and rib cage. You will have a classic look. Pair it with a high waisted skater or pencil skit, overalls, or high waited jeans. Crop tops come in solids, floral prints to stripes.

Similar to the crop top, you can also purchase the bustier top. Both bustier and crop tops are perfect tops for a warm day in spring and certainly for the upcoming summer season. Just like the crop top, the bustier top can be worn with a cardigan, regular small jacket or the famous crop jacket. Have fun with it by mixing patterns and textures.

54

Outerwear

The cropped jacket is a new jacket style that is a perfect jacket for the spring. You may remember this style as the “bolero” jacket. Wear it in the day or at night. The trench coat is a classic timeless piece every fashionista should have in her closet. Black, Khaki, Olive or even in pastels this season. Other must have spring jackets are a denim jacket and a moto jacket. Your outerwear can really pull the rest of your look together. Whether you’re wearing a plain white tee and boyfriends jeans or a little skater dress, what you pair it with always adds to your outfit.

Nails

If you enjoy a fun mani, tis the season to rock some pastel and neon colored nail designs. Every fashionista knows nails today are as important an accessory as your bag or shoes. Not into the whole nails as art thing? Try a neutral color and limit to one nail design on one nail per hand.

55

High Wasted Bottoms

A high waisted harem or loose fitted bottom is all the rage this season. Pair with the crop top, a tube top, or even a sheer top. Perfect for resort wear and nights out on the town.

The Tea length skirts are also in style right now. No short skirts this spring, ladies! Try on this type of skirt, it’s really flattering to all figures and there are different styles to choose from.

Spring Break Getaways The anticipation of Spring Break! It doesn't only have to be a break for the kids, we can have fun too! Have a family of your own, no reason to miss out. Try out some of our awesome ideas for a much needed Spring break getaway. Adventures Unlimited: For those of us who need a break from the snow and we had a lot, heading south may be a great option for spring break. Florida has beautiful beaches, theme parks and sights to see. If you want to do some family camping and ziplining, head over to Adventures Unlimited in the Pensacola area as one of my friends suggested. Amelia Island, Florida: is the destination with something for everyone and educational attractions like historic Fort Clinch that the whole family can explore together. The island is rich in history, but if your kids aren't looking for a history lesson on their Spring Break vacation, skip it and head straight to the beaches. There are plenty of opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, fishing and kite-flying on Amelia Island's shores. After the beach fun, head over to Fernandina Beach for shops and restaurants. Great Wolf Lodge: This indoor water park is a BIG hit with the kids. There are twelve Great Wolf Lodge’s around the nation so you can pick the destination of your choice. It’s quite a massive waterpark with slides and pools for every child, young or old. The whole Great Wolf Lodge experience is amazing. As soon as you walk in the doors you feel like you’ve walked into a North Woods Cabin. It’s all fun stuff, but not as fun as the main attraction… the water park. Cherry Blossom Festival: Pink is the New Black in Washington, DC! The National Cherry Blossom Festival starts and lasts until April 13 and even includes a special Blossom Kite Festival. Every year in early spring, the 1,678 Japanese Yoshino cherry blossom trees ringing Washington’s Tidal Basin and surrounding area near the Jefferson Memorial and FDR Memorial burst into bloom with their white and pink flowers. The whole phenomenon really is beautiful, as the color of the blossoms changes from pink, when young, to puffy white, when mature. Blooming only lasts for a few days, but there are other fun events planned as part of this fun festival.

57

Boston: Here's your chance to see a baseball game in the oldest major league stadium still in usehistoric Fenway Park, if you can get tickets to see the Champion Red Sox play. You will enjoy Boston because it's so easy to time travel back to the 18th century on the Freedom Trail and back to the 21st century! It’s a definitely bona fide fun trip with many things to do such as museums like the New England Aquarium, the Children's Museum of Boston, the Boston Museum of Science and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts with its many family art workshops. Niagara Falls is always a popular destination and you can visit two countries in just a matter of minutes! On the Canadian side you can find entertainment in the form of wax museums and arcades on Clifton Hill. Head down to the Falls and take in the incredible views and learn about the incredible history in the area. Mont Tremblant: Did you ever want to travel to a different country for a long weekend? Hmmm…Oh where, oh where should you go that won’t kill the budget and satisfy the entire family, or a girls’ weekend (oh heck, a mommies’ weekend), or a romantic getaway to celebrate a special year without the guilt of being away from the kids for too long? There are many options to be adventurous in the great outdoors of Mont Tremblant such as hiking, cycling, kayaking and the list can go on. Mont Tremblant Resort is a versatile resort that can accommodate a family adventure, an anniversary weekend or a girls’ getaway. Puerto Rico: is the island getaway for those looking for Latin culture without needing a passport. Puerto Rico also offers many unique activities to entertain a family from its beautiful beaches, historic fortresses, rain forest canopy tours, bio-luminescent bay, and contemporary art galleries. Riviera Maya, Mexico: a Caribbean haven with postcard-perfect waters! Consider Xcaret, a Disney- esque "Eco Maya" theme park, features snorkeling, butterflies, cultural activities, and more, and XelHa, another park, also has excellent snorkeling. There is a variety of activities to please everyone! Turks and Caicos: this Caribbean nation is known for its pristine beaches and high-end resorts.

Caring for Your Greatest Accessory It’s been proven that by brushing twice a day and flossing daily can keep the dentist away! You can add years to your life by taking these precautions and prevent disease or tooth decay. What is Plaque? It’s a soft, sticky, colorless film with bacteria that attaches to the surfaces of the teeth. This accumulation of bacteria, if not removed properly, may lead to gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gums. Gingivitis is known as the first sign of trouble (red bleeding gums). The accumulation of plaque turns into tartar (hardened plaque) and it destroys the tissues and the bone that support them. If not treated by a dentist and hygienist, you can lose your teeth. The signs of gum disease are not always easy to detect and can be painless at times. The earlier trained dental personnel address the gum disease; the chances are that you will get to keep those pearly whites for a very long time!

Born in Cuba, Hilda is a Dental Hygenist with over 25 years of experience in the dental field. She currently works in Elizabeth, New Jersey and resides in Bergen County with her husband and young son.

To Prevent Tooth Decay & Gum Disease, Follow These Simple Steps: . Brush properly after every meal using a soft bristle toothbrush. Clean the outer and inner surfaces of each tooth. Angle the toothbrush in a 45° along the gum line, brush gently in a circular motion. Brush the chewing surfaces of each tooth and with the tip of the toothbrush, clean behind of each front tooth. Do not forget to brush your tongue! . Floss daily preferably at nighttime. Use about 18’’of floss, leave and inch or two to work with, wrapping the floss around the index and thumb of both hands gently insert the floss between the teeth and clean beneath the gum line. The benefits of brushing and flossing are endless. Having a beautiful smile is one of them. Remember, your smile is your best accessory.

Hair Salon Review

by: Lillie Morales I recently had the pleasure of visiting Brush Salon in Long Branch, NJ. Creative Director, Jason DeSantis, kindly invited me to experience the salon’s services. It was a fun day of pampering and beautifying my locks. Only a 40 minute drive from the parkway for me and I was at Brush. I was greeted by the friendly receptionist and Jason as soon as I arrived. The salon’s decor is a mix of industrial and vintage chic style. The colors are warm and inviting. Jason explained to me who would be working on my color, cut and style. The two ladies, Jade and Jeanine then introduced themselves to me and began the process. Jade, the colorist, explained the type of product she was using. She told me the color would give me a nice shine and infuse healthy ingredients into my hair. I didn’t have to wait as long as I usually do for the color to set in. I sat for a few minutes and spoke a little more to Jason about the salon which he explained will be expanding in July. Brush Salon is committed to the relentless pursuit of creativity, style, and service. Client experience and establishing positive relationships is very important to Brush. Next, I had to have my hair rinsed. The woman who washed my hair was also very friendly. She gave me a great head massage while washing my hair I must say! I also have to say I’m impressed that she managed

not to get me wet aside from my hair. Every salon I have ever experienced manages to get either my face, neck- I have even had my back wet. Not a nice feeling. I also liked their turban technique. Instead of knotting the towel on your head, they fold it in a way that creates a little towel turban. Everyone at Brush was very welcoming and friendly. I was offered refreshments plenty of times by the rest of the staff. Last, Stylist Jeannine gave me a cut and style. She asked me which way I like to part my hair, if I was ok with the use of styling products and more. Both Jade and Jeannine talked to me about the products Brush uses made by Kerastase. Jeannine is expecting her first baby so we had lots to talk about (mommy stuff!). I was excited about having my hair cut by a pregnant woman. My mom always told me if a pregnant woman cuts your hair, it will grow! The end result was great. My hair never looked so shiny and healthy! Jason gave me a set of Kerastase to use at home. I can’t wait to try it! I want to thank Brush Salon for such a nice experience. I am very happy with my hair color, cut and style. The staff was very kind and generous. I look forward to working with Brush Salon again. If you are in the NJ area, I highly recommend this salon. Tell them JerseyFashionista sent you
