Winter Hair Care Tips Oh the weather outside is frightful!! As the temperatures continue to drop lower it is important to take care of your hair more than ever. Here are some tips on how to care for your hair during these freezing winter months. DRY AND FLAKY SCALP A change in the weather can cause the scalp to peel. During the winter months there is less humidity in the air, which can make your scalp dry. If the peeling is constant and you have other symptoms such as large flakes and itching you may have dandruff. If you have dandruff you will want to use a medicinal shampoo or deep cleansing/clarifying shampoo. FLAT / LIMP HAIR When the temperature drops to single digits and negative numbers we have no choice but to bundle up and put a hat on. This could cause our hair to become flat and limp. Before you start layering up with all your outerwear make sure you style your hair in a way that adds body. When you wear a hat it creates heat, which will have the hair hold the shape its in. So if you styled with extra body it will hold that body even after taking the hat off. For extra volume use a root lifter such as Scruples Direct Volume. This will lock in the volume and keep your hair looking gorgeous. STATIC IN THE HAIR Static happens when the hair picks up an electrical charge from the dry air, which is primarily in the winter months. The winter months have less moisture in the air which makes everything from our hair, skin and nails more dry. To combat static you will need to switch to a more hydrating shampoo and conditioner, use ionic hair tools and more deep conditioning masks. You can also add a deep conditioning treatment to any hair service when you go to the salon. These treatments will add moisture and shine to your hair and all under fifteen minutes.

DULL HAIR Between the dry air and the rough temperatures our hair can become lack luster in the winter. Also, the combination of our styling tools , hair color and products can put a toll on our hair. You don't have to stop doing these things to your hair, but you will to be more proactive and preventive to ensure that your hair still glistens and remains healthy. If you shampoo everyday you will need to switch to a more conditioning product to make sure you are not striping the hair of moisture. If you blow dry regularly you will need to add more heat protection to your routine so prevent split ends, dryness and breakage. Mist a heat protection spray such as Moroccan Oil Thermal Protection spray on to your brush to fight off dryness. If you flat iron everyday rub regular olive oil onto the plates of your flat iron once a week to keep hair from getting too dry from the heat. CURLY HAIR PROBLEMS Most curly haired vixens like to style their curls when they are wet. However, during this time of you try not to leave with wet hair because the dampness will turn your curls hard and stiff. When styling squeeze out excess water with a towel and then flip your head over and use a diffuser. Even if you did this for just five minutes you will see the difference with your curls and they will not lock up once you get outside. Celebrity stylist and curly hair expert Quidad advises the following for getting the most out of your curls during the winter months: 60 Degrees and Above: You're good with gel. Choose a moisturizing formula with botanical extracts that works with the humidity to hold the shape of your curl. 59 to 41 Degrees: This is the best temperature for curls. Go for a non-silicone-based gel or mousse 40 Degrees and Below: Curls can go stiff unless you choose a styler that softens. Pick a moisture-rich conditioning creme. Most importantly is to keep your tresses hydrated. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water, taking your multi vitamins and/or supplements and most importantly using products that will provide your hair nourishment and heat protection.

Valentine’s Day Outfit Remix: Day to Night Valentine’s Day is here again! It’s the day where Cupid is floating around waiting to strike with his arrow of love aimed right at your hearts. Whether you are going to celebrate with some friends, family, or have a romantic date you are probably wondering what to wear. To help inspire you, I’ve created a Valentine’s Day look that can be transformed from day to night with a few simple tweaks to complete your outfit!

The Day Look For the day look, I wanted to keep it elegant but troublefree. This black and white printed dress from Mandee worked impeccably. It has a classy length with the end of the dress falling a little over the knees. Black and white is such a timeless color that can be worked around countless styles. I paired this printed dress with modest low heeled pumps, which succeeded in giving the dress the slight daytime swanky element. These pointy toe pumps are Jlo brand for Kohls and they have charming little gold detailed studs. They are cute and inexpensive, which is such a good combination. I added my glasses to the daytime look to give it the “geeky” and urbane feel. With my hair picked up it really worked well together. The finishing accessories to the day look were a simple infinity necklace from Primadonna and a black and gold tote from JustFab. Ladies, keeping it meek but chic works well for a daytime look.

The Night Look Transforming this dress for a night look can be very simple with just a small amount of fine-tunes that make a vast transformation. Adding a pop of color against the black and white print will surely make you stand out. I changed the heels to red pumps. Red is such an audacious color and will definitely match the Valentine’s Day theme while also giving your outfit a romantic feel. I changed the purse to a clutch to convert the outfit into an “outfit of the night” and to keep the pop of color theme in red. This envelope sized clutch from Forever21 did just the trick. Another tweak was adding a statement necklace. A statement necklace can transform any outfit. I let my hair down and took off the glasses. What’s more, I added a brash red lip which makes the look much more exciting. Simple components transformed this look and gave it an instantaneously tasteful factor for a night time ready look.

It’s all in the details ladies, and modest particulars can make over your get-up from day to night! Whether its adding accessories, including color, or differentiating the style in your hairdo, or even choosing to go with a self-effacing and bold lip color; any of these subtle changes can transform your outfit from one feature to something utterly like chalk and cheese. Don’t underestimate the power of the little things in your wardrobe.

Finding Fashion After Motherhood Last year, I started looking for the perfect contrast jacket. But after I had a baby in June, all of my needs and wants fell to the wayside. Fashion was no longer a motivation to get me up in the morning when I used to work as a full-time reporter. I’m a stay-at-home mom now, and on most days during this wretched arctic winter, my outfits are anything but chic. I feel like a snow

troll, trapped in the house and bundled in spandex and cotton that absorbs myriad baby excrement. Then in January I saw a beautiful picture of JerseyFashionista Editor, Lillie Morales-Torres wearing a gorgeous contrast Pimkie jacket from Paris, and it motivated me to go back on the hunt. I was searching online last week when I fell in love with a Walter Baker trench coat with vegan leather sleeves, a popular item worn by the Spencer character on a television episode of “Pretty Little Liars.” From that point on, in my spare time during nursing sessions, I scoured the Internet to find one - and find one that was not the original price, which was $228 on the Walter Baker website. Holy Lord, I couldn’t spend that much without feeling the guilt of how many diapers that would buy. But I did have money from Christmas gifts to allow myself a “mommy” treat. Thing is, it is sold out everywhere. At Macy’s. At Saks. Ebay had one for $175 and it was an extra small. That wasn’t happening. Then, I came upon the nursing mothers’ Shangri La of fashion. I found a picture of the trench on a website for a new, online boutique, www.shopburu.com, “Handpicked Ready-To-Wear For Breast-Feeding Moms & Beyond.” The clouds parted, the ice started to melt. I couldn’t believe I found my jacket on an online store for women just like me. And it was $114. Why was this such a miracle find? After almost eight months, I’m still exclusively breastfeeding my baby. I can’t wear complicated clothing, but I still want to feel confident and look stylish. Bu Ru’s mission is to help new mothers and those who are nursing find ready-towear non-maternity clothes that will be comfortable and fashionable, the kind that will last when I am beyond this period as a new mom. Founded by Morgan and Brett Hutchinson, the site launched on Sept. 24, and was inspired by their 15-month-old daughter, Olive, as well as Morgan wanting to find fashionable clothing for pregnancy and motherhood. “I couldn’t find anything I liked. The mom lifestyle in general requires a completely different set of clothes,” Morgan says. The shop, which supports all

mothers whether they formula-feed or breastfeed their babies, carries easy access clothing, chic elastic waist pants, and washable wear, Morgan says, as well as “must-have” items such as wrap dresses, blazers, and leggings and stretchy pants. Some of the designers whose lines are carried by the shop are working mothers, such as Rebecca Minkoff and Mara Hoffman. Other lines there include David Lerner, Rachel Roy, Corey Lynn Calter, and L.A.M.B. by Gwen Stefani. “Sometimes what moms completely stop buying is that special piece,” Morgan says. “We try to find special pieces that are baby friendly, and get them

from play date, to office, to date night.” That’s how I felt when I got my trench. It might not seem like a big deal to the general public. But in my little mommy world, it was the special piece that put the stride back in my step. It also helped give me a boost of encouragement to continue breastfeeding. Sure, most of the time I don’t want to put in the effort to dress up. Then after being in the house for so many days, I have to go to the supermarket, and it’s like I’m going to the Grammys and I bust out the black pleather blouse and three pendant necklaces, aching for any excuse to get back into my groove. When I called Bu Ru to ask about the trench, I bonded instantly with Morgan, and she took the time to talk to me about life as a new mother, and how it can be difficult to feel sexy and glam when you’re drained, sleep-deprived, and adjusting to your tiring yet rewarding new role. She had only two of the trenches left, sizes small and large, and in Olive. Somewhere in the middle of our halfhour conversation, she was kind enough to have one of the employees, who was about my size, try the jackets on for me. Because I lost the baby weight and I thought a more snug fit would look neater with a trench, we decided on the small. I feel great in it, and it’s the perfect cover up for breastfeeding on these chilly days. I can’t dress up the way I used to every day, and that’s more than okay with me. My first priority is taking care of my son and it can’t be done right if I’m worried about spit on my clothes, or the baby grabbing a piece of jewelry. But I still want to be me, I still want to look good, and I still want to feel good. I can’t spend money like this on myself every week. But just because I’m a mom and still want to maintain my style doesn’t mean I have to look like Peggy Bundy in my leggings. I am so grateful for this experience and for Morgan who helped me make my first big “mommy” purchase. Blessings come every day: the fact that the oil hasn’t frozen in this dreadful weather, we have food in the refrigerator, and most of all that my son is healthy and thriving. But this was such a nice thing I could do just for me: a nursing mom, a wife, a writer, a woman.

Getting to know Nadia Kay... JF: What inspires you when it comes to... music? modeling? acting? NK: I love performing and while on stage, having the audience connect with my music gives me the best feeling on Earth and inspires me to keep creating!! As far as modeling - I get really inspired by colors, textures, and also the shape of designs and how they fit. I love form-fitting clothes that can easily transition from day to night with a simple addition of accessories, an exciting shade of nail polish or lipstick, a cool belt or a sexy pair of heels. Recently, I have been doing a lot of acting, which is super cool because I went to acting school in my early twenties, and now being able to apply the technique to my work allows me to take my skill to the next level. My biggest inspiration is the work of Scarlett Johansson, Nicole Kidman and Marilyn Monroe. JF: Where is your accent from? NK: I was born in Odessa, Ukraine - a beautiful city-resort on the Black Sea. I moved here with my family when I was 7, that’s twenty years ago. I first lived in North Carolina for a few years, but having come from a big city, it was very difficult to adjust there. I moved to NYC at 18 and the rest is history. JF: Tell us about your feature in Keanu Reeves’ new action thriller ‘John Wick’ NK: I’m playing the lead character’s girlfriend. It’s a small role but I got to shoot a few scenes with Keanu Reeves - so that was quite an experience. We shot at a beautiful Aire Spa in NYC so I also got a chance to chill, soak in the hot tub and get pampered in between the takes. JF: What is the most exciting moment you have experienced in your career? NK: It’s hard for me to tell, because I get excited at every single job I do. I really love what I do, so the satisfaction that comes with makes every day a great day. I love concept photo shoots, I love trying on new looks and playing different characters. I’m also working on my 3rd album and experimenting with different sounds and even voices. So stay tuned! JF:What is your ultimate goal? NK: My ultimate goal is being happy, doing what I love, living my life day by day and enjoying every step of the way. I’m blessed with having found the love of my life who makes my journey even more meaningful.

Where’s My Libido? During a recent girls night out my friend says “I think my libido got lost in space!” Most women don’t live like the sexually provocative characters on Sex and the City and many often experience significant downtime in the bedroom. The complaint of lack of libido or desire is one that I hear about on a regular basis. I hear it from my patients who are in their 20’s through my post-menopausal patients. The fact is that almost every woman at some point in their life experiences a decreased sex drive. Surveys show that sexual dysfunction, defined as low libido, slow arousal, difficulty reaching orgasm, and painful intercourse, occurs in 43 percent of women. There are many reasons for this decrease. Smoking, diabetes, depression, thyroid dysfunction and menopause are just some of the causes of low female libido. Recently a patient came in, almost tears, “Dr there is something definitely wrong with me; I have no desire to have sex”. This was a big change for her. She had enjoyed a healthy sex life with her husband for 10 years and now felt absolutely no desire or fulfillment from intercourse. During her full evaluation we did discover that she had a hypoactive thyroid gland. In order to define female libido, you first have to understand the basics of libido. In its simplest form, libido means sexual desire, but there are few things in this world that are that simple! Female libido isn’t a simple matter of becoming aroused and maintaining that feeling to reach orgasm. Aside from the physicality of sex, it involves tricky things like hormones, emotions, and psychology. Women require a proper balance of all these things just to become aroused in the first place, never mind achieving orgasm. True to their gender, female libido is a more complicated then male libido. There are still mysteries of the female body that continue to elude the medical community, and the study of female sexuality is one of those uncharted medical courses. Men have had sexual enhancement products for years to aid them in their sexual desire and performance. For the reasons discussed above it is difficult to come up with these products for women. Female libido relies heavily on emotional factors – with love, self confidence, and an emotional connection with their partner being big ones. Psychologically, if a woman’s head isn’t in the moment, then her body can’t often fill in the gaps. Physiologic arousal requires a surge of blood flow to the vaginal areas to not only heighten desire, but also make it easier to achieve a powerful orgasm and satisfying sexual experience. When all of these things work at once, it can result in one of those Harry Met Sally moments!! Sometimes all you need is to get past one of these

47

factors in female libido to kick-start the rest. The good news is if you are experiencing a drop off in your desire there are things that you can do. If it is a sudden change then I would recommend a full physical and gynecologic exam. This would help rule out a medical cause. If you are on a combined estrogen/progesterone contraceptive i.e. pills or the ring they can sometimes effect your libido as well. That is not to say that you should stop what you are currently doing but perhaps you could explore other options with your physician that may not affect your libido in the same way. If you are postmenopausal your decreased libido may be caused by physical and hormonal changes to your body. A discussion with your gynecologist about treatments for vaginal dryness and atrophy, hormone replacement therapy, and/or testosterone cream may be helpful. Sometimes an over the counter lubricant can be enough to take away some of the discomfort caused by vaginal dryness. There is no great medication that women can take to help with sexual dysfunction at this time. Multiple studies, with Viagra, looking at many aspects of sexual dysfunction show no improvement in a woman’s sex life. A recent study of 66 women, ages 23 to 65, with sexual dysfunction for an average of six years, found that Wellbutrin SR may be an effective treatment. Approximately one third of women experienced doubled interest in sexual activity, sexual arousal and sexual fantasies. Although Wellbutrin SR is an antidepressant, the women in this study did not suffer from depression and they did not have relationship difficulties. More studies are needed to support this preliminary data. Some women have gained benefit from behavioral therapy to help increase sexual arousal. Such therapy is aimed at enhancing sexual fantasies and focusing one’s attention on sexual stimuli. For women in on-going relationships, the therapist would also look into the possibility of communication problems in the relationship, or lack of sexual stimulation by the woman’s partner. With that being said for all of us life, including work, children, marriage, financial stresses, can lead to a loss of libido. Try to re-kindle the sensuality in your relationship. This doesn’t necessarily mean just making the effort to plan a “date night” with dinner and a movie. Try being more spontaneous, maybe plan a one night getaway without the kids, or do something you enjoyed together when you first met. You can even stay in light some candles, open a bottle of wine, take a bath together, try giving your partner a massage, and take the time to focus on each other.

Get a Natural Glow with Organic Spray Tans Winter gets so cold and boring. It leaves us counting down the days to summer. When we think of summer, we think of a nice warm tan. It not only compliments our skin, but our summer wardrobes too. But with busy work schedules, many of us don’t get enough Vitamin D so we opt for things like tanning lotions or even worse tanning beds. Many consider organic spray tans to be just a new and improved version of the traditional spray tan. Some of the components that can be found in a traditional spray tan include dye, oil, alcohol, perfumes, and various chemicals. An organic spray tan is free of each and every single one of these things. This is the main difference between an organic spray tan and a traditional spray tan. An organic spray tan is definitely an excellent choice for anyone who wants to experience the benefits of spray tanning, but who also does not want to be affected by the chemicals used in spray tanner. This may vary according to where you go for your spray tanning needs. In general, most places will charge you about the same price for an organic spray tan as they would for a traditional spray tan. The average of both types of spray tans is about $60. If you can pay about the same amount of money for an organic spray tan as you can for a regular spray tan, it makes more sense to opt for a more natural solution. Why expose your skin to chemicals and poor smells? Organic tanning also doesn’t leave you ompa lompa orange. When done correctly by a certified tech and licensed esthetician, you can achieve a gorgeous bronze look. Bella Organici provides the most natural all organic tans. Often they offer spray-tanning machines only but some salons have added an airbrush-tanning technician to their list of services. Hotel spas often offer airbrush tanning as well. Hair salons have found it beneficial to add this service to their menus. Many mobile airbrush-tanning businesses have developed as a result of the high demand for this service. These technicians will service you in the comfort of your own home.

De-clutter Your Life By Lillie Morales-Torres

We know it all too well; spring cleanup. It’s that time of year when the season begins to change and you want to liberate yourself of any excess baggage in your life. From car to closet to home, there’s much to be tossed and given away. Here are some fun tips to help you get started. 1) Pile It Up- Make three piles: Toss, Gift, Keep. Who says TV doesn’t teach you anything? I learned this from the show Clean House on the Style network and believe me it works! Toss the junk, give away what you don’t use, and keep what you love. 2) Contain It- Use storage bins or contains to keep your messes in check. Label the containers indicating what’s inside. For ex. Cables, art supplies, holiday décor; etc. documents such as bills, warranties, and manuals. 4) Shelve It- Use your wall space to shelf items like books, board games, clothing, or smaller containers. 5) Jar It- Put those old mason jars sitting in your cupboard to use. Store small things like paper clips,

Good money-management skills are a must have. If you don’t have a household budget today, start one. A fashionista needs to know where your money is and where it is going! In order to know how much you can spend on a new home, you need to analyze what you can afford to spend. This might include cut backs on clothes for all of you shopaholics out there! Once you have your current finances figured out, make up a fake budget for homeownership. Find out how much homes cost in your area and how much your mortgage payment will cost. Then, factor in higher utility bills, homeowners insurance, property taxes, homeowners association fees, and maintenance and upkeep costs, as well as higher commuting costs if you're thinking about moving to a neighborhood farther from work. If you simply cannot afford the increased expenses that come with a house, it's never a good time to buy — no matter what's happening in the real-estate market. Traditionally, to get your foot in the door, you'll need a down payment worth 20% of the home price. That means for a $250,000 home, you'll need $50,000 upfront. Sure, there are ways to get around that steep requirement with zero- or low-down loans, but those options will cost you. You may have to pay extra for special mortgage insurance or take out a piggyback loan with a much higher interest rate. With the slowing housing market, having that 20% down payment becomes even more important because you'll start off with some equity in case you have to move earlier than expected. "In the early years, you aren't building any equity with the mortgage payment. Buying a home is a long-term huge financial commitment, so you'll need regular cash flow to cover those monthly payments. If you're in school, plan to go back to school, have a less-than-reliable job or plan to start a family, you need to take a good look at your future financial abilities. Will you be able to make your mortgage payment 3 months from now? How about 3 years from now? Some couples can afford the house when they're both working, but if a kid comes along and one wants to stop working, then they might have an issue.

h o m e o w n e r s h ip ? If you have enough cash on hand to cover three to six months of your living expenses, you'reone step closer to being prepared for homeownership. Just in case something happens to disrupt your steady income like a serious illness, a layoff or even a natural disaster that keeps you fromworking; you want to make sure you can still afford to make your mortgage payments until you can get out of your rough patch. Lenders like to make sure you'll have enough money each month to pay your dues. So before they'll give you a mortgage, they take a look at your debt-to-income ratio. Usually speaking, they want to make sure your monthly housing costs, counting principal, interest, taxes and insurance, will be no more than 33% of your monthly gross income; and that your total debt payments, including your mortgage, credit cards, student loans and auto loans, will remain below 38% of your total pay. So if you have large outstanding debts, it's a good idea to try to pay them down before applying for a mortgage to make sure you can qualify for as much money as you'll need. This also means you should avoid taking on any substantial new debt six months to one year prior to your purchase, or you may throw your ratio off. So, it may be best to drive that clunker for a little while longer, or put off charging that European vacation.

Winter Fabulous Let’s face it; the cold season just makes us want to throw on our sweats, add on layers, and head out the door. Mother Nature is not playing this winter season with its brutal cold fronts and back-to-back snowstorms. Let’s just say the Polar Vortex is here to stay for a while. Pulling off a summer look is simple; maxi dress with sandals and you’re out the door. However, when we’re faced with cold temperatures it becomes more of a task to stay warm AND stylish. Here are three tips on how to look chic even when you’re forced to bundle up. A good coat is a base piece for your winter wardrobe. It’s what’s inside that counts, but when the temperature drops, stylish outerwear matters. Investing in a statement winter coat will keep you warm and modish. When looking to purchase a statement coat, look for something that’s stylish but useful, warm but not bulky and trendy but convenient. It’s all about details like bold colors, prints or patterns and embellishments like fur that will help your coat make a statement. This double-breasted printed coat from Joyce Leslie is sensible and fashionable without breaking the bank. You can never go wrong with your basic black and white hounds tooth print whether it’s for a daytime or evening look. A hat is a big winter accessory. Hats do so much more than keep your head warm; they can help you make a fad declaration and help you originate a new style. Something as simple as a hat can glam up your winter outfit by giving it the finishing touch you’re looking for. With so many styles, from fedoras to wide brim hats, it’s impossible to just choose one. One of my favorites is this black winter floppy hat from Joyce Leslie. Whether you want to keep your head warm or just hide from the winter flurries, it will give you that voguish factor you’re looking to add to your winter apparel. Don’t forget fabulous footwear. Like these black thigh high Forever21 boots, for example. Definitely show stoppers! They’re adaptable as they can be paired with tights, jeans, or skirts. There are plenty ways to wear these boots without having to comprise your warmth for the winter. All you need is some aggrandizement to make a fashionable statement. So many designs and details for you to choose from, such as a buckle, zipper, or even thigh high length like I sported in my winter look will add that fab element to your winter look. Don’t let these low temperatures, bring your wardrobe down or make you look unfashionable. Yes ladies, it’s brutally cold outside but you can win this battle against Mother Nature. When you look good, you feel good, and we all can do it no matter what the season. Follow these three winter fabulous tips, and you will be flying out the door looking as pretty as an ice princess.
