Art I Spy A to Z

Art I Spy A to Z

D is for ‌ Dog And isn’t it a very cute dog! I wonder what its name was? This picture was painted before there were proper roads between St Helier and St Aubin, so people often used to walk across the beach. Can you see the lady carrying a basket on her head?

E There are so many things in this painting! But what begins with E? Can you see any elephants? How about an eel? Do you need a clue? The answer is the name of the thing artists lean their pictures on when they are painting?

The Artist’s Studio in Hill Street by John Le Capelain (1812-1848)

E is for‌ Easel

Nowadays paint comes in tubes and bottle. When this picture was painted, artists had to make their own paint by crushing rocks and minerals. They used one of these tools, which is called a muller.

This is a mahl stick. Artists rest their arms on a mahl stick to keep their hands steady as they paint.

J Maybe its jumper? Nope that definitely looks like armour he’s wearing. Remember to look all around the painting

Sir Anthony Paulet, 1597 by Marcus Gheeraets (1561/2-1635/6)

Art I Spy A to Z

J is for‌ Jersey Sir Antony Paulet was the Governor of Jersey in 1588. He was a REALLY important man. In real life, this painting is big and would have hung high on a wall, so that he could look down on the people below him. Although he was a very important person, he still had wrinkly stockings!

K View of St Helier, 1833 by Philip Hutchins Rogers (1786-1853) This is a really difficult one! Here’s a clue – k is often a silent letter at the beginning of a word, so you don’t say it.

K is for ‌ Knitting Knitting was once really popular in Jersey. In the early 1600s people in France loved Jersey stockings! But Jersey people were so busy knitting stockings that they stopped planting crops! So knitting was banned apart from certain people at certain times of the year. Men could only knit if they were with their family.

Art I Spy A to Z

L is for ‌ Lily This lady is called Lillie Langtry and she was famous in her time for being really beautiful. She was born in Jersey, so this painting is called A Jersey Lily.
