Proms, Graduation, College and... an Estate Plan? By Christina Hardman-O’Neal Rites of passage for your 18-year-old.
3. A Health Care Proxy and Directive (to manage health care decisions in the event of an accident, hospitalization or disability)
Now, more than ever, estate planning should be a rite of passage for every 18-year-old. Your 18-year-old is an adult, and you, as their parent, have no inherent right to see their grades, talk to their doctors and review medical records and options, access their bank accounts, or speak to creditors and insurance carriers without basic estate planning documents in place. Simple estate planning should start early and must change and evolve as your family builds wealth, enters relationships, leaves relationships, and as the laws and times vary. The most basic and essential estate planning documents for every adult (even your 18-year-old) include: 1. A Will (even if all your child has is a car and a small checking account or credit card) 2. A Power of Attorney (to manage bank accounts, bills, and access college information)
The risks are real. Accidents account for 41 percent of deaths among people between 15 and 24, and motor vehicle accidents alone account for almost a quarter of all deaths of young adults. A properly drafted and executed health care proxy and directive will allow you to speak to doctors, make medical decisions, and consider treatment options on behalf of your adult child. Similarly, a power of attorney will allow you to deal with your child’s banks, colleges, creditors, landlords, and other third parties with whom your child has business dealings. So, even if your adult child is still on your health insurance, still covered by your car insurance and even if you still claim them as dependents on your tax returns and pay their college tuition, room and board, you have no legal right to speak for them or to advocate on their behalf without a power of attorney and a health care proxy and directive in place. In the absence of estate planning documents, a parent might need court approval to act on their child’s behalf through the adult guardianship process
which can be expensive, time-consuming, emotionally draining and complicated, especially if there is a disagreement between parents of the adult child such as with divorced parents. In addition, already existing documents should be reviewed periodically but especially now, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many traditional documents include language about life support and the use of intubation or ventilators, which may not be appropriate if you are diagnosed with COVID-19, as a percentage of seriously ill COVID-19 patients will need a ventilator to survive the virus. So, while we live in very uncertain times, and many things seem out of our control, some things are still in your control and can provide great peace of mind. Certain rites of passage can still go on, even in a pandemic. Virtual meetings, remote communications, and mobile signings have become the norm, and, just like prom, graduation, and entering college, it should be the norm for every 18-year-old to sign a Health Care Proxy and Directive as well as a Power of Attorney and a Last Will and Testament.
HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER KATE ZIMMERMAN WORKS BEHIND THE SCENES SUPPORTING OCEAN SPARTANS By Robert Solomon
(OTHS’s nickname) blood in my veins helps me to connect with the athletes, teams and coaches in a special way.” Athletic trainers do more than treat injuries. Their many responsibilities are outlined in the Five Domains of Athletic Training. These five domains can be summarized as injury prevention, assessment and diagnosis, immediate and emergency care, therapeutic intervention and health care administration and professional responsibility (www.nata.org). Zimmerman also teaches an Introduction to Sports Medicine class, as OTHS requires its athletic trainers to teach in addition to their other responsibilities. “It’s more common not to teach but some do. The Shore Conference is mixed, but most (athletic trainers) don’t,” said Zimmerman. Fall sports teams begin practices in the first week of August and that is when Zimmerman’s year begins. Her year ends the following June, usually with the New Jersey Track Meet of Champions. She then finishes out her teaching semester.
OCEAN TOWNSHIP – High school athletes perform incredibly on the field. Newspaper stories are written about the success of players and/or teams on a daily basis. Fans applaud and teammates congratulate each other day in and day out. However, athletic directors, school administrators, grounds crews, bus drivers and athletic trainers are some of the people behind the scenes that make this a reality. They are the unsung heroes of the high school athletic community. Kate Zimmerman is one of these unsung heroes at Ocean Township High School. Zimmerman has been the Ocean head athletic trainer for the past four years. Her interest in becoming an athletic trainer started as an athlete at OTHS. “I got hurt in high school and spent time in the training room. I realized this is something I could see myself doing; helping people.” OTHS has a Student Athletic Trainer program and Zimmerman was involved in it during all four of her years in high school. “I mostly did it in winter and spring because I was involved in the band during the fall season,” she said. After graduating in 2009, she attended the University of Delaware, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training and then completed an internship there. Her next step was to complete a six-month internship at the University of Mississippi. Her first athletic training job was a per diem position as a master/graduate assistantship at the University of New Mexico. She then went full circle and was hired at OTHS. “I was home on winter break and talked to the athletic trainer. He mentioned that he was leaving and suggested I apply at Ocean,” said Zimmerman. She was initially hesitant to apply but decided to take the chance. She landed the job. Zimmerman is enjoying her return home. “It’s a lot of fun to have that connection to the school. The kids love to hear about my experiences as a student and what it was like when I went there. Ocean is a very tight community and the fact that I have Big Red
Zimmerman is required to attend all practices unless they are held on a Sunday or there is a conflict in the schedule. “I cover most practices on campus,” she said.
Zimmerman also has between five and ten student trainers who assist her. “The student trainers will sit at games and be my eyes and contact me if I’m needed,” she said. Multiple injuries occurring in similar time periods are always possible and a concern. “There definitely have been times when there are multiple injuries at the same time. I have to take care of the most serious one or the one that happens first,” explained Zimmerman. “The coaches are CPR-trained and the First Aid Squad is always an option.” All athletic trainers are trained to stabilize and transport a patient. “I am responsible for all management until they go on the ambulance,” stated Zimmerman. She takes her responsibilities very seriously. “If they are on my field, they are my patient until I turn them over to a paramedic or EMT.” Luckily there have been no life-threatening injuries during Zimmerman’s tenure. “We’ve had hip dislocations and fractures, but I never had to perform CPR,” she said. “I did have to treat a spectator for minor issues.” Athletic trainers are not an island unto themselves. Not only do they work directly with the ath-
Zimmerman isn’t looking to move on from OTHS. “I don’t think so. It is possible, but I enjoy the group of athletes I work with. The hours are long but not as long as they are at higher levels.”
This could be difficult when there are several practices going on simultaneously. “I bounce around or am in my room,” said Zimmerman. “The coaches have radios if they need me. Also, all coaches are certified in CPR and first aid. They carry Emergency Athletic Plans which are also posted on-site.”
When asked what advice she would give to any student considering a career in athletic training she quickly responded, “Try it out. Volunteer. Get involved in high school by talking to your athletic trainer.”
Another concern is practices that are run off-site. One example is the OTHS tri-op hockey team which practices in Wall at the Jersey Shore Arena. “I definitely attend ice hockey (practices) because of all the contact,” stated Zimmerman. Zimmerman is required to be at all home games. “Away games are covered by the home athletic trainer. Football games are the only away games I am required to attend,” said Zimmerman, who also noted that she will attend a home game that is played offsite if it is high-contact such as ice hockey. If there are multiple home games on the same day, Zimmerman has a system in place. “I’ll sit at the highest level (varsity) game or the game with the most contact.” There is no schedule conflict with football, so she is always at those games.
Even with her busy schedule and long list of responsibilities, Zimmerman feels strongly about staying involved and giving back. “The organizations do a lot to advocate and support the profession and I feel that’s very important to be part of these organizations. It has been a great way to make connections. I initially got involved as a student almost ten years ago and I have developed many great professional resources and friendships through my involvement.”
letes, but they also must interact with the athletic director and the coaches. “The athletic director is my direct supervisor for sports and training,” said Zimmerman. “We have a close relationship. Every day I am communicating with him regarding schedules, athletes, parents and accident reports, etc. We also have a lot of communication during the games.” Zimmerman also gets along well with the Spartans coaches. “We have close communication and a mutual respect for their positions and mine. I am one of their biggest supporters of the teams and I try to fulfill their needs.” The NJSIAA is also involved in overseeing athletic trainers and has a Sports Medicine Advisor Committee which helps shape NJSIAA policy. “The committee looks to trainers when reviewing and coming up with policies,” said Zimmerman. “A few examples are concussion protocol and heat participation.” As a professional, Zimmerman participates in the state and national associations. She is involved with the Athletic Trainers Society of NJ and chairs the NJ Young Professionals Committee. On the national level, she is the NJ representative to the National Committee of Young Professionals for the National Athletic Trainers Association. “We are a resource for athletic trainers who are transitioning from college to the workforce,” she said.
Zimmerman is very proud of what she has accomplished, but values how she has affected the students at OTHS. “One of my former students called me and said she was happy to get into a college program. I was excited that someone I mentored is succeeding,” she said. “The best part of my job is working with my athletes on a daily basis. You develop a relationship with your athletes and you like to see them succeed and achieve their goals on the field and off,” stated Zimmerman. With Zimmerman at OTHS, her athletes not only have a dedicated athletic trainer, but also a mentor, cheerleader and driving force supporting their successes on the field and in their futures.

Red Bank Regional AD Del Dal Pra to Retire LITTLE SILVER – After almost 30 years as a public school educator, Del Dal Pra will be retiring from Red Bank Regional on August 1. Last month, the Red Bank Regional Board of Education regretfully accepted Dal Pra’s retirement papers and will begin the search for his replacement soon.
and the rebuilding of the home and away stands. In the Field House, resurfacing the floor with wood, replacing the old lights, wood bleachers and adding new scoreboards were all a big hit. The biggest game changer was building a new weight room and putting world-class weights in it, but also adding a full-time strength and conditioning coach made the RBR teams consistent championship caliber ones.
Dal Pra started his career in the early 1990’s teaching Physical Education in Fair Haven and coaching football and baseball at RFH. He then coached baseball at Henry Hudson taking the Admirals to the Central Jersey finals in 1996 and was named the Shore Conference Coach of the Year. In 1998, he was the head baseball coach at Ocean County College.
By 2020, all these groups and initiatives have fully paid off and will for years. This past fall, most RBR teams not only had a .500 record, most of the teams made states and deep runs in the playoffs, capped by girls tennis CJ Group III championship. RBR Superintendent Dr. Louis Moore made the following gracious comments concerning Del Dal Pra’s retirement in recent correspondence:
In 2000, Ocean Township AD and Shore Conference legend George Conti Jr. hired him to teach PE and coach football and baseball for the Spartans. As an assistant football coach, he helped the Big Red win two CJ Group III rings (2000 and 2005). On the diamond as the head coach, his teams won four division titles, two Monmouth County championships, two Central Jersey Group III titles, and one Shore Conference championship. In 2006, he was named Coach of the Year. In 2008, Dal Pra agreed to become the tenth Athletic Director at Red Bank. RBR was in the midst of an all-time low on the athletic field. For example, during his first fall season as a Buc, the football team was 0-10. Boys soccer had one win; girls soccer had two wins and girls tennis and field hockey had three wins each. “That fall was very hard on me; we didn’t have one win in any boys or girls sport at either varsity, JV or freshman level during the month of September,” Dal Pra said. “I remember thinking they were going to fire me even before the winter season, which ended up not very good as well. As that school year moved on, I could see I was going to be rehired because no one really cared and that’s when I realized we had to change the entire culture or this job was not going to be easy.” In his first two years at the RBR helm, Dal Pra replaced 22 out of 27 head coaches for many different reasons, but that added a lot of pressure to the position. Dal Pra said, “Those times were horrible for me; we had teams playing on fields and courts that had no upgrade in almost 40 years. Outdated uniforms and equipment had to be replaced with one of the smallest budgets in the Shore Conference. I knew we had to think outside the box because it was not safe for our student-athletes and they deserved better.”
Additionally in 2008, Dal Pra realized that the RBR student-athletes were behind before they even entered the RBR doors. The local middle schools and recreation programs had almost no sports or competitive teams to offer the future Bucs. With the help of the Red Bank, Little Silver and Shrewsbury recreation departments, the feeder programs he helped form, and even coach, contributed to the growth of the Bucs’ pipeline and made a huge difference at the high school level. Feeder groups that will be here long after Coach Dal Pra has moved on include Jr. Bucs Wrestling, Little Silver Lacrosse, Two River Little League, Red Bank AYF, Jersey Shore Thunder Travel Baseball, plus many more. In 2009, Dal Pra founded the Buc Backer Booster Club and things began to role and wins started to come. Over the next 10 years with the parents and help from the community, projects began and were completed on time. Some of the projects under his guidance were adding lights to the stadium field for night games
“Under his leadership, RBR has achieved many milestones. New programs have been introduced and others expanded. During his tenure, RBR has grown to have one of the largest athletic programs in Monmouth County. Not surprisingly, he has been honored multiple times for his contributions to student athletics, both at the county and state level. I know we are grateful for his work to support our programs, but what we value most about Del is his genuine kindness and commitment to young people. Whether it was a kind word of encouragement, attendance at countless games or even driving students to practices and events in the Rec Van, Del has always gone above and beyond to help everyone. Through it all, Del continues to ‘live the dream’ and lead by example. We will miss him but it’s nice to know he won’t be too far from RBR next year.” What’s next for Coach Del? “I have no idea,” he said. With his oldest son Will heading to Florida State in the fall, and middle son heading to his junior year at RBR and youngest son Hank entering his sophomore year, he will find plenty to do. “I can’t wait to stand on the other side of the fence and just watch my boys play. I’ve had a lot of interesting offers from other Shore Conference schools but the one thing I am learning from this COVID-19 period, it’s time to slow down and get away from it. Working 60-70 hours a week and averaging 330 work days per year over the past 10 years has gotten to me,” he said. “I made a lot of friends at RBR and am so proud of what we were able to accomplish. The coaches are some of the top professionals in our area and I only wish I could do more for them.”
RFH Celebrates the Class of 2020
RUMSON – Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School has officially begun end-ofyear commemorations for its Class of 2020! In a time filled with unknowns, one thing is for sure… finishing high school is a huge accomplishment, a milestone to be proud of, and one that the RFH school community is coming together to honor. On Friday, May 15, seniors were surprised with Bulldog “swag,” lawn signs, blankets, and T-shirts as mementos of their four years at RFH walking the halls, studying in classrooms, playing on the fields and singing on the stage. This came exactly one week after RFH began its “Be The Light” campaign to honor the Class of 2020 every Friday night through June. Stadium lights will be turned on at 8:20pm (20:20) for 20 minutes and the community has been encouraged to join in by turning on their house lights simultaneously to show their support. RFH is appreciative of the cooperation of the Rumson and Fair Haven fire and police departments in these endeavors. Though COVID-19 has disrupted many end-of-year senior traditions at RFH and all throughout the state and country, RFH is committed to recognizing the hard work of each and every member of the Class of 2020. As always, go Dawgs!

Stoves at Salt Creek Grille Are All Fired Up for New Takeout Menu
RUMSON – Takeout dinner options just got better! Salt Creek Grille, which was closed to the public in March by state mandates due to the coronavirus, has fired up its stoves and is now offering a new takeout menu. The award-winning and hugely popular waterfront restaurant serving new American grill fare has been a mainstay embedded within the Rumson community for over 20 years. Salt Creek Grille is offering heat-and-serve individual and family meals and grill-at-home seasoned, uncooked meat, chicken and salmon BBQ packages that serve four adults Wednesday-Sunday, 4-8pm. Salt Creek Grille is also holding a half-off sale on all bottles of wine while supplies last.
“We are excited to get our business running again even if it’s just offering a limited takeout menu,” said Steve Bidgood, co-owner, who opened the Salt Creek Grille on April 15, 1998. “We will reopen to the public when we get the green light. The Northeast has been hit hard by the COVID-19 virus and we sense that our opening for takeout will give our community a little bit of comfort. We’ve been serving this community for 22 years and we have shared in thousands of memories with our guests. We are so excited to open for takeout!”
The limited takeout menu will offer heat-and-serve main courses for individual and family meals with easy reheating instructions and includes choice of two sides, and one soup or salad serving four adults. Takeout cooked items include of roast chicken, meatloaf, rack of ribs, Asiago chicken, stuffed meatballs and rigatoni, chicken and goat cheese bucatini. Grill-at-home uncooked, pre-seasoned items include coffee-rubbed NY steaks, chimichurri-marinated flat iron steaks, seasoned filet steaks, brined chicken breasts, seasoned salmon filet, Provence-seasoned whole chickens (split in half for the grill.)
of Salt Creek Grille’s BBQ sauce, marinara sauce, and Caesar salad dressing. Orders can be placed by calling 732-933-9272, 10am7pm (while supplies last) at which time the order must be paid for by credit card. Those placing orders will get a time slot to pull their car up in front of Salt Creek Grille, and a manager wearing mask and gloves will bring out the takeout order and place in the car’s trunk.
Starters, which serve one for individual meal or four for family meals (one included with heat-and-serve and grill-at-home mains), are house balsamic and Caesar salad (dressing on the side for both) or chef’s soup. Orders with main include two sides serving four, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, citrus brown rice or seasonal vegetables. There are also several add-ons such as bacon-wrapped stuffed shrimp, tuna sashimi with avocado, cucumber, wasabi, ginger, soy; chocolate or butter cake and quarts

The Jay Patock Unsung Hero Award is named after long-time Rotarian and one of the founders of the Vince Lombardi Awards, after he passed away. The award is presented to a Monmouth County high school football player who has persevered and made real contributions to his team while not expecting anything in return. After deep, careful consideration, the Vince Lombardi Awards committee is proud to announce this year’s recipient – Red Bank Regional senior middle linebacker Will Dal Pra. Dal Pra was supposed to receive the award last month at the Vince Lombardi Awards, but the coronavirus pandemic changed all plans. No new date has been set for the event.
his team lead in sacks with four and tackles for a loss with 12, with fellow linebacker Owen Laughlin. Dal Pra was then named First Team All-Liberty Division and Second Team All-2 River Area. Dal Pra and Laughlin were also named Co-Defensive Players of the year for the Bucs. Dal Pra holds a 3.9 GPA and will attend Florida State University in the fall and major in Business.
Red Bank Regional head coach Dave Schuman nominated Dal Pra and said, “I have been coaching for 17 years, and it is the first time that I had a tough, gritty, smart leader of the team, who was also the ultimate team player. Will was also one that truly takes the time to make sure every single member of the team feels a part of the team. He cares for every one of his teammates and was willing to help the team in any way he could.” This past fall the Bucs went 7-4, and had a top-ten Shore Conference defense. Dal Pra was one of the Shore Conference’s top tacklers and led the Bucs with 88 tackles. He also tied for
LUNCH BREAK RELAUNCHES FOODSTOCK-UP 2020 FOR OPERATION GEAR-UP
RED BANK – Hunger doesn’t social distance. In response to an increase in demand for food during the COVID-19 pandemic, Lunch Break, a non-profit organization providing food, clothing, life skills and fellowship to greater Monmouth County, is relaunching its FOODSTOCK-UP 2020 food and fund-raiser to help replenish pantry shelves for Operation Gear-Up: We Will Not Miss A Meal. More families are depending on Lunch Break during this crisis and the organization depends on the community for support. In April, the organization served more than 8,000 grab-and-go meals, nearly 50 percent more than this time in 2019. And more than 2,000 families and individuals received groceries in April alone – a 49 percent increase over March. “Our goal is to reach as many pounds of food possible and fund donations – donations that help us meet the increased demands for the many children who will otherwise go without lunch while schools are in recess,” said Millie Jeter, Director of Administration. More than 51,000 grocery bags were distributed from the Client Choice pantry in 2019. “And that number is steadily increasing now, as more unemployed people seek help,” she said. Lunch Break is inviting individuals, families, businesses, clubs, schools and organizations to coordinate a food or toiletry drive and “Stuff the Truck” at their location for delivery to Lunch Break in Red Bank.
How it works: • Select the dates and locations. • Organize the food pickup and recruit volunteers. • Register your drive if you need community service hours (Lunch Break Food Drive Registration form is available online at www.lunchbreak.org or by e-mailing Millie Jeter at mjeter@lunchbreak.org or calling 732-747-8577, ext. 3102. • Promote the food drive. • Plan for delivering your donation to Lunch Break. • Among the non-perishable food items requested are applesauce, canned beans, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta, sauce, tuna, shelf-stable milk, assorted fruit juices, healthy snacks, and person al hygiene products. For more suggested items, go to www.lunchbreak.org. FOODSTOCK-UP is accepting drop-off food and toiletry items 9am-2:30pm, Monday through Friday; and 9-11am, Saturday at its Red Bank headquarters, 121 Drs. James Parker Blvd. Also support FOODSTOCK-UP 2020 by shopping online at Lunch Break’s virtual grocery store www.lunchbreak.org/ shopwithlove, or donate securely online at https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/ lunchbreak or send a contribution to Lunch Break, 121 Drs. James Parker Blvd., Red Bank, NJ 07701. Every dollar donated equals 1 pound of food. For updates, follow Lunch Break on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter #whywebreak #givelocal
