Jacob Sobelman Portfolio of Selected Works ABOUT ME
I am a twenty-three-year-old architecture student in my first year of graduate school with The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University. I always loved to draw as a child, and I first became interested in architecture after a brief summer camp program at PHX Architecture back in 2015. My passion for art and my excellency in math and science topics in school fueled my early interest in architecture, as the profession is the perfect combination of both creativity and technicality. At the end of my internship with Kendle Design Collaborative in the summer of 2017, founding architect Brent Kendle spoke with me in his conference room, saying that my creation of the as-builts for his current home finally gave him something to start working on his ideas for an expansion and remodel of his home. His appreciation and gratitude resonated with me from that day forward, helping me realize this is why I do what I do. There’s nothing more satisfying than bringing a vision to life and the happiness that comes with it. Since this experience I have been fortunate enough to work with various residential and commercial architects throughout Arizona every summer in addition to earning my Bachelors of Science in Design for Architectural Studies from Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University.

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts
The first year of my graduate school journey begins with an exploration of adaptive reuse in Scottsdale, AZ. The Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts is nearly abandoned unless there is a performance in production. Through my proposed interventions I have created a way to open the space to all people at all times. Performing arts includes more than just drama, music, and dance; however, the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts does not reflect this. Unless there is a performance being held, the building remains essentially unused. How can the performing arts center evolve to truly be a central hub for the performing arts? My intervention seeks to redefine what performing arts truly means by expanding its definition. By removing unnecessary spaces, I have added to the building various performance spaces which did not exist prior, including a dance studio, circus acrobatics, culinary arts restaurant, and a sports performance arena. Additionally, I have physically opened the building to the adjacent park, and I have invited the nature of the park into the pre-function space. I have also added a building facade made from sustainable materials which acts as a performance itself, waving up and down as it wraps around the building’s exterior.
Next Steps Living and Learning Center
One thought that haunts the parents of autistic individuals is, “What happens when they’re older?” Even more scary is the question “What will happen when I’m gone?” My brother is on the autism spectrum, and my mother describes these thoughts as ones that “keep [her] up at night.” She explains, “I think it’s important for him to be completely engaged and productive, and we have that right now because we’re in our little safety bubble...that’s going to end...and it’s kind of scary.” Around 50,000 children with autism turn 18 every year in the United States, and nearly 90% of autistic individuals lose access to the services they have relied on throughout their entire lives. My hope is that architecture can help to answer this question by providing a place for adults on the autism spectrum to learn how to eventually live and work independently in the future. By implementing certain design features and design criteria to minimize the sensory overload issues commonly experienced by individuals with autism, we can create a safe space for learning for young adults on the autism spectrum.
Rio Salado Housing Project
On the North Path of Tempe Town Lake lies a project known as the Tree of Life by Marilyn Zwak, which designates an area on the lakeside undergoing tree reintroduction. This became both the inspiration for my design as well as the location. All of the common spaces sit on the east side of the site, while the units extend out towards the west side, similar to the branches of a tree extending from its trunk. The U-shaped configuration of these common spaces creates a large courtyard filled with amenities for the residents to enjoy. Moving from the shoreline towards the freeway, each subsequent branch of units doubles in height to provide as many units as possible with the best views of Tempe Town Lake and its surroundings. The first branch contains only studio units while the second and third branches contain an alternating configuration of studios and two bedroom units.
The Swirling Stone Library
A library has always been--and always will be--a place for people to learn new things. Libraries can also be a great way to bring the community together. Unfortunately, separating the programs of a library into the three given categories of public use, collection, and staff support spaces only works in theory. In practice, there is much overlap between programs as they are put into use. Instead, the separation of programs comes from the recategorization of programs into public community learning spaces and private staff and business spaces. While the public and private spaces are programmatically separated, they are not physically separated by any barrier to offer easy worker-patron interaction. The building surrounds a circular atrium which illuminates the building with natural sunlight and brings life into the space as it connects the building and its patrons to the nature of the park in which it resides. Located in Evelyn Hallman Park in Tempe, this is the Swirling Stone Library.
