Father’s Day Special: “Celebrate Nigeria, and Nigerians Achievements!” Dear Hon. Ajibola,
Olawale Idreez, Publisher
I must once again, humbly reiterate what I said earlier, commending you for above message. I don’t really believe anyone is naive enough to ignore all the stated facts, pointing out that Nigeria has problem(s). Be it tribalism, scholastic-egoism, religious superiority, and high level of corruption. True enough, the latter issue (high level of corruption) is a grave-yard concern, and should be dealt with in a serious manner, with all hands on deck. First of all, remember Hon. Ajibola, when you were campaigning for APC early last year, and I was very reluctant to join your group; not necessarily because I did’nt admire your efforts; but mainly because I was one of the few pessimistic people that believed Nigeria could not be revived either politically, economically, or even morally, if I may add. But sir, with the scientific approach this newly elected government of President Buhari is taking to retrieve the embezzled money transferred to different oversea countries, and hopefully put it to good usage to better the lives of underserved Nigerians. There’s no other approach better than that, and it takes audacity to take that leap of faith move.
Father’s Secondly, we, particularly those of us that have overspent our stay in foreign countries (with all due respect) often think, or believe Nigeria is the worst nation, Day when it comes to corruption. I still beg to disagree; meaning I totally agree with you positive message of hope, Honorable Aijibola: “Celebrate Nigeria and NigeriSpecial ans Achievement!”
Point of examples, I was at the Hong Kong, China’s Business Dialogue, sponsored by J.P. Morgan Chase Bank two days ago (21 S. Clark St., Chicago), with the heynote speaker, Mr. Ronnie C. Chan, Chairman of Hang Lung Group Limited ( Subsidiary of Hang Lung Properties Limited) in Mainland China. This man, as wealthy as he is, he did not mince any words without laying so much emphasis on how flamboyantly corrupted China is. I had to take two more cups of the delicious coffee served, to make sure i did not choke on those words. Meaning , I have always been made to believe (lately) that Nigeria is the worst corrupted nation on the planet Earth. The man called so many examples of many other corrupted nations globally, which Nigeria happens to be rated close to the bottom of the list. Please understand clearly, I do agree too, that corruption is not a healthy part of any nation’s economic growth. At worse, it will certainly... 4 AFRICA USA TODAY

POWER AFRICA INVESTMENT FORUM MONDAY, JUNE 27, 2016 9:00 – 11:30AM HYATT MCCORMICK 2233 SOUTH MARTIN LUTHER KING DRIVE CHICAGO, IL 60616 “Power Africa is a fiveyear United states of America Presidential initiative aimed at supporting economic growth and development by increasing access to reliable, affordable, and sustainable power in Africa.” According to the International Energy Agency, SubSaharan Africa will require more than $300 billion in investment to achieve universal electricity access by 2030. Only with greater private sector investment can the promise of Power Africa be realized. With an initial set of six partner countries (Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria, Liberia, Ghana, and Ethiopia) in its first phase, Power Africa is scheduled to add more than 10,000 megawatts of cleaner, more efficient electricity generation capacity. It will increase electricity access by at least 20 million new households and commercial entities with ongrid, minigrid, and offgrid solutions. And it will enhance energy resource management capabilities, allowing partner countries to meet their critical energy needs and achieve greater energy security. The purpose of this forum is to bring together stakeholders in power development projects and investment (power users, producers, distributors, and investors). The forum will focus on power projects, investment opportunities, and implementation initiative. MODERATOR Mr. Olivier Kamanzi (CONFIRMED)

National Service Agency Announces $402 Million in AmeriCorps Funding Grants will support 44,500 AmeriCorps members across the U.S. and provide $174 million in scholarships to those who serve
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) today announced $402 million in AmeriCorps funding to put AmeriCorps members on the ground to address critical issues in communities across the U.S. The federal investment includes AmeriCorps competitive grants totaling $228 million, which will provide 44,554 Americans the opportunity to serve through AmeriCorps in more than 346 organizations across the country. AmeriCorps members will work in communities to strengthen education, provide disaster services, foster economic opportunity, assist veterans and military families, preserve the environment, and expand health services. A complete list of awards can be found here. “AmeriCorps provides organizations the support to meet critical needs in communities around the nation,” said Wendy Spencer, CEO of CNCS. “AmeriCorps members are improving the lives of millions of citizens and making a powerful and lasting impact on the toughest challenges facing our nation. We salute these AmeriCorps members for standing up and serving our country.” The 2016 AmeriCorps grant cycle was highly competitive due to the strong demand by organizations competing for AmeriCorps resources. The competition prioritized investments in economic opportunity, education, veterans and military families, disaster services, and an initiative for governors and mayors. Organizations receiving grants include Habitat for Humanity, Teach For America, YouthBuild, City Year, and hundreds of other nonprofits, community and faithbased groups, universities, school districts, and local agencies. AmeriCorps is a publicprivate partnership, and every AmeriCorps grantee leverages significant outside resources to operate their program. The $402 million in federal funding will leverage an additional investment of $626 million from the private sector, foundations, and other sources, strengthening community impact and increasing the return on taxpayer dollars. 16 AFRICA USA TODAY

One Woman’s Father’s Day Reflections on Entrepreneurship and Character
The end began, they conjecture, with a Christmas puppy that should have brought joy and slobbery face kisses tipping his blanketed crate into the wood stove that heated the office of the furniture barn. It seemed like it all ended with the smoldering black rubble of what remained of my father’s dream. Not so.
There was a period of time when my father’s dream was obscured, nearly snuffed out by the choking smoke rising from the blackened ruins. But it did not die. It was reformulated, revived and renewed by his spirit of entrepreneurship and strength of character.
He had always been a creative person, having performed in his early adulthood with a number of vocal groups including Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians. But he also had an interest in business, an affable personality, and a will to succeed at his own enterprise. He recognized early the benefits of owning his own business rather than relying on others for his livelihood while enriching theirs with his labors. He launched his own furniture store. Then, combining his creativity with his drive and entrepreneurial spirit, he hatched the idea of a 5-spoke quonset hut building in which to re-plant a new, novel furniture store.
His response to adversity and his fierce “Can-Do” attitude did not go unnoticed, and his entrepreneurial spirit flows in his daughter Pam’s veins. She saw the benefits of owning and operating one’s own enterprise. She also saw the downside: The long hours, the re-heated dinners, the upkeep 24 AFRICA USA TODAY

and overhead, and the abbreviated vacations. She also saw the pain suffered when knowledge and care sown into green employees brought the ultimate harvest of betrayal when they quit to open a competing furniture store in the same community.
Pam decided that for her, the next evolution of entrepreneurship had to include the following: • Residual Income (do the work once, get rewarded forever) • Brick and Mortar Retail Store Unnecessary • Geographical Ubiquity • Product(s) with Universal Appeal Daunting requirements, but FOUND. Had the internet, e-commerce and mobile commerce been available when Pam’s father was living, his eyes too would have brightened, and he would have led the pack.
We all have our own memories of our fathers- some sweet, some bittersweet, and some, bitter with the pain that he was cruel…or absent. We each have within us the ability to choose to reflect and magnify the good, as well as the strength to rise above the not-so-good and the painful to become stronger and better. In today’s digital market of ideas we have a golden opportunity to nurture an entrepreneurial spirit and create a paradigm and a legacy of prosperity for future generations. In this new age, rather than clambering over or trampling on others, we can get to the top of our game by reaching out and making the climb together. It is a great entrepreneurial world. My father saw it. I see it. Let us help you see it too. ~Pam Benjamin globalpeebs@gmail.com AFRICA USA TODAY 25

Patrick Henry Wade

Mini Bio (1) He may have made TV history as the first black game show host back in the 1970s, but the talents of singer/actor/musician Adam Wade extend far wider. Born Patrick Henry Wade, he grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In the late 1950s he served as part of the research team for Dr. Jonas Salk who invented the polio vaccine. In 1959, he switched to performing and found in himself a smooth, gifted vocalist, his early influences being Johnny Mathis and Nat 'King' Cole. In 1960 he decided to make the journey to New York and pursue his dream. He signed with CoEd Records within a very short time and scored quickly with a string of mild successes including "Ruby" and "I Can't Help It." He also started traveling as a nightclub entertainer playing all over the world and highlighting in such important venues as the Copacobana. The next year (1961) proved to be the peak of his recording success with "Take Good Care of Her," "Writing on the Wall" and "As If I Didn't Know" making the charts. Comparisons to Mathis at CoEd Records, however, damaged his momentum and he looked elsewhere, moving to Epic Records. Only one of his singles, "Crying in the Chapel," broke the "Top 100" charts. In the late 60s Adam discovered voiceover work and started grooving as an actor. After appearing in the national tour of the musical "Hallelujah, Baby!" with Kim Weston andJulius LaRosa, the became a part of the film "blaxploitation" scene of the early 1970s. He bounced around in a few hip support roles such as Shaft (1971), Come Back, Charleston Blue (1972), Across 110th Street (1972) and The Education of Sonny Carson(1974), among others. On TV he was seen in the soaps "The Guiding Light" and "Search for Tomorrow," and was a familiar presence on the popular blackoriented sitcoms of the day including "Sanford & Son," "The Jeffersons," "What's Happening" and "Good Times." The handsome actor became the first AfricanAmerican to host a national television game show with Musical Chairs (1975). The resulting attention encouraged him to restart his recording career in a funkier vein on Kirshner Records in 1978 with songs including "Alexander's Soul Time Band." He returned to acting and in 1978 costarred in an allblack cast of "Guys and Dolls" starring Leslie Uggams in Las Vegas. He also gave able support in such films as Texas Lightning (1981) and Kiss Me Goodbye(1982). An occasional stage director ("Cafe Society," "Guys and Dolls"), the grayhaired actor understudied Ben Vereen on Broadway in "I'm Not Rappaport" in 2002, and subsequently appeared in the movie Brother to Brother (2004). He took time out to go back to school (after forty years) and earned his BA and Master's degrees at Lehman College and Brooklyn College. He has been a speech and theater adjunct at LIU and Bloomfield College for some time and appears frequently on the L.A.area stage. Formerly married to Kay Wade, with whom he had three children, Adam is currently wed to entertainer Jeree Wade. They perform together on cruise ships and in concerts forums as well as produce shows. The South Side: A Portrait of Chicago and American Segregation: Natalie Y. Moore: 9781137280152: Amazon.com: Books Format: Hardcover In The South Side, local resident Natalie Moore weaves three themes into a long taut braid. There are her memoirs of growing up in south side Chicago, garlanded by its history and characters. There is the socioeconomic backdrop which altered that history and twisted it into less than it could have been and still could be. And there is the racism, overt, underlying and institutional that tortures countless lives. This is a worldwide phenomenon of course, but it is worthwhile to examine it in real terms in America’s Second City, which is mired in it, mostly thanks to machine local government. Moore devotes chapters to housing, schools and food, pointing out the overt, the underlying and the institutional racism they incorporate. Her own experience is straight middle class, largely free of racist incidents and overt prejudice. Nonetheless, she has developed into a thoughtful, perceptive and in her words “uppity negress,” which is really fundamental to telling this story properly. The book is not scientific, prescriptive or complete; it is personal and selective. The South Side ends on several positive notes, as barriers appear to be falling. Blacks and whites are mixing, housing is opening up some, and attitudes are slowly changing as integration and multiculturalism become assets rather than taboos. As one interviewee put it – segregation isn’t the problem; the diversion of resources is the problem. Blacks need not be desegregated to thrive; they need to stand up to whites to get access to the resources they have an equal say in and right to. David Wineberg Comment 15 people found this helpful. Was this review helpful to you? Format: Kindle Edition I picked up this book because it was about the South Side of Chicago, where I was raised. The author followed me by about 35 years, but has the same love for the neighborhood my generation had. She then launches into a history of the South Side and the segregation that characterizes the city, but although she states her premise many, many times and in several different manners, she does not break any new ground or solve any problems. Nevertheless, it was a well researched, well written book that current Chicagoans would benefit from reading Comment Was this review helpful to you?
