On Sunday, billionaire Robert Smith stood up to give a commencement speech and shocked the graduating class of Morehouse College by pledging to pay off their student loans. Smith understands as well as anyone how a graduation speaker can change a young man’s life. A graduation speaker changed his own life. In 1994, Smith was graduating from Columbia Business School and thinking about pursuing a career in marketing. An engineer by training, Smith had already worked on products at companies like Kraft General Foods and Goodyear Tire & Rubber. The last thing Smith wanted was to go to Wall Street and become a financier. The speaker at Smith’s Columbia graduation was John Utendahl, who founded a pioneering black-run investment bank. Utendahl noticed the young African-American man sitting among the other Columbia Business School graduates. Utendahl sought Smith out after the ceremony and invited him to lunch. Over tuna sandwiches, Utendahl convinced Smith to ditch his other plans and give investment banking a try, helping Smith land a job at Goldman Sachs. Smith spent about six years working at Goldman Sachs. Utendahl actively mentored Smith during those years as Smith rose to become cohead of a San Francisco-based Goldman group that advised enterprise systems and storage companies. With the help of one of those clients, Smith started his own financial firm in 2000. Vista Equity Partners, the private equity firm Smith founded, is now one of the most successful investment firms on the planet. It manages $46 billion in assets and has generated top financial returns that are the envy of Wall Street. Vista invests exclusively in software companies and uses Smith’s carefully designed playbook to manage them.
BUSINESS
Vista continues to make major news in software and private equity. Next on the agenda is the close of its $16 billion fund. The firm's wild success under cofounders Smith and Sheth has also made it a far bigger phenomenon. Last week, Brian Sheth, alongside actor Leonardo DiCaprio and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, launched the Earth Alliance, an effort aimed at addressing global climate change. In May, Smith’s philanthropy made worldwide headlines during his commencement speech at Morehouse College by offering to pay off all student debt of the graduating class at the Atlanta-based historically black college. For Smith, a beacon of African American success in business and investing, the move was a quarter century in the making.

REAL MEN COOK TO CELEBRATE GENEROSITY OF MEN WHO SERVE AT 30-YEAR FATHER’S DAY MILESTONE Anniversary will highlight successes and impact of Annual Father’s Day Event
Real Men Cook -- Chicago’s premiere urban Father’s Day charity event -- marks its 30-year milestone this year. The food-tasting event’s purpose is to uplift families, promote wellness and highlight positive black male engagement. This year’s celebration is being held on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 16 from 3PM to 6PM at Hales Franciscan, an all-male high school located at 4930 S. Cottage Grove, in Chicago’s Bronzeville community.
Real Men Cook is the largest, longest-running and most-anticipated Father’s Day celebration of its kind. It provides a platform where “real men” from all walks of life give up Father’s Day pampering to work and be celebrated for demonstrating extraordinary commitment to their families and to their communities.
In making the announcement, Ayinde Cartman, executive director of Real Men Charities -- the presenting nonprofit -- stated that the longevity of Real Men Cook is testimony to its endurance as a must-attend family celebration and to the community’s embrace of its mission. He added that this year’s event will feature the standard fare of celebration, food, family and fun but will include reflections on its history with tributes to the founders, cooks, volunteers -- the heroes and heroines behind the event’s success.
He added that this year’s gala will be driven by the hashtag #RealMen30, which will be a landing spot where well wishes will be placed.
“We are excited to reach this 30-year journey,“ Rael Jackson, long-time Real Men Cook director, declared. “I have grown up with Real Men Cook. Seeing how far we’ve come and understanding the commitment by participants is amazing. It is also fantastic to see these men bring their culinary artistry and their families each year in a spirit of love.
Explained Cartman, “All my life these men of Real Men Cook have devoted countless volunteer hours and resources to cook their favorite dishes and serve. It is inspiring because the overarching goal is to influence young men to serve and grow their families and communities throughout the year.”

We deemed it fit to re-construct our focus. That's what we intend to do after this edition. Stay tuned! Meanwhile please enjoy this edition superbly done with you in mind. Chicago Defender Men of Excellence
EVENTS
In today’s time, when negative news about Black men can top our newsfeeds and some conversations, there is one program in Chicago that continues to feature Black men who excel in their careers as well as in their service to the community and to their families. The Chicago Defender will honor 50 such men at its annual Men of Excellence Awards dinner. The 12th Annual Men of Excellence Awards dinner will take place on Friday, April 26 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, 151 E. Wacker Drive. The awards program and dinner will take place from 6-9 p.m. The focus this year is mentorship and the importance of Black men serving as mentors to others, especially younger Black men and boys trying to find their way in business, entrepreneurship and life. Some of the distinguished honorees in this year’s class include community activist Andrew Holmes, The Honorable Judge Carl Boyd, entrepreneur Rick Edwards of Chicagoland Fat Loss Camps, and many other businessmen, lawyers, entrepreneurs and community leaders. The 50 honorees were selected from more than 100 nominations, according to Dyanna Lewis, vice president of marketing and sales at the Defender. “We salute men who are not only doing a great job in their careers but are also excellent in community service and family,” Lewis said. “We are acknowledging men who give back to the community – who go above and beyond. Doing [their] job is expected, but these men are those who go above and beyond in career and in community service.” The nomination form calls for “men who exemplify extraordinary strength and commitment to their profession and to the community. Nominees must also be at least 21 years of age, live within a 50mile radius of Chicago’s center and be active in their professions. The Men of Excellence award not only honors exemplary men, but it builds a strong network of likeminded men in the Chicagoland area. Several outstanding community members, politicians, businessmen, entrepreneurs and others have been recognized since its beginning in 2007. The inaugural class included Congressmen Bobby Rush, Danny Davis and Jesse Jackson Jr., Secretary of State Jesse White, jazz musician Ramsey Lewis and businessmen Spencer Leaks Sr. and Spencer Leaks Jr. “I’m very proud of that honor; today, I still look at that photo [of the inaugural class of Men of Excellence],” said Sam Balark, director of External Affairs at AT&T, who also served as board president of the Chicago Southland Chamber of Commerce at the time he received the award. “The Defender has meant so much to the community; this award stands out to people. It is hard to express how much it’s meant to me.” Another member of the inaugural class, Nathaniel Ward, who is now community relations liaison at City Colleges of Chicago, said receiving the award helped him develop his life-long relationship with his mentor, Craig Gilmore who was also a part of the first class. “I was one of the youngest in that class,” Ward recalled. “It was wonderful. [After the award], people were taking notice of what I was doing, I was running a small nonprofit at the time; people began to comment how they wanted to help. It was wonderful.”

Trade with Africa Business Summit On August 1st & 2nd, 2019, business leaders, trade experts, investors and policy makers will convene at the Trade with Africa Business Summit 2019 in Chicago Metropolitan; a vibrant trade an economic hub. We invite you to join us at the 2nd edition set with the theme: Growing U.S. - Africa Trade, Trade Financing & Developing Africa's Supply Chain. Here are 5 reasons why you do not want to miss this incredible and unique event: Trade not Aid: Over the past 20 years, Africa's policy leaders have built and strengthened political relationships in Washington, DC which has led to an overall increase in U.S. foreign Aid toward the continent. In recent times, however, the conversation has rightly shifted from capturing Aid to Trade but the accompanying strategy must also shift. The biggest gap is that Africa's leaders must begin to establish strong partnerships with the U.S. business community outside of Washington to truly capture trade. Trade opportunities abound outside of D.C. because corporate America is stronger in trade opportunities while Washington remains the political epicenter. Content: Agenda for the event is structured around igniting trade conversations and facilitating actionable dialogue both in the context of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA). We know that Africa offers new export market for U.S. manufactured products. Similarly, U.S. serves as an untapped market for authentic African products—raw and manufactured. For leaders interested in export and import, sustainable agriculture, supply chain, technology innovation, women’s empowerment, health and education, this conference offers unique opportunity to capture ideas that can be replicated to fast track trade with the region. U.S. still engages at less than 2% of total global trade with Sub-Saharan Africa and there is room to grow these numbers.

Book Club Features I N A L I F E filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama
has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America—the first African American to serve in that role—she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-toearth daughters under an unforgiving media glare. In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations—and whose story inspires us to do the same.
