Mo Farah To Race Chicago Marathon vs. Galen Rupp View Full 2018 Chicago Marathon Coverage Jun 14, 2018 Johanna Gretschel

CHICAGO – The Bank of America Chicago Marathon announced today that four-time Olympic gold medalist, six-time world champion and five-time European champion Mo Farah will join the 2018 Chicago Marathon elite competition. In 2012, Farah became the first British athlete in history to win an Olympic gold at the 10,000m, and he is just the second athlete in history to pull off back-to-back gold medals in both the 5000m and 10,000m at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games. The Chicago Marathon marks Farah’s third go at the distance and his first 42K on U.S. soil. He joins defending champion and former training partner, Galen Rupp, at the front of this year’s elite pack. Farah and Rupp made history together at the 2012 London Olympics, finishing with the gold and silver in the 10,000m. If you're in the U.K. or Ireland, you can watch Farah duel Rupp at the Chicago Marathon LIVE on FloTrack! “Mo and Galen are two of the greatest distance runners of all time,” said Executive Race Director of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon Carey Pinkowski. “They come to Chicago following in the footsteps of incredible runners like Khalid Khannouchi, Sammy Wanjiru, Moses Tanui, Paul Tergat, Steve Jones and more. These two runners have competed at the highest level of competition and I’m confident they will come prepared for what’s shaping up to be an epic showdown.” AFRICA USA TODAY 25

Trump’s new trade deal gets a few things right while falling short

BY JESSE JACKSON October 1, 2018

Donald Trump on Monday announced a new NAFTA draft treaty, renamed for showtime as the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Canada, ignoring Trump’s insults and gibes, threats and posturing, joined Mexico in making a deal. The new pact contains some much needed reforms — and falls glaringly short in critical areas. Auto workers and truckers get some relief. Big oil and Big Pharma get paid off. The prices of prescription drugs will go up in Canada and Mexico. For Trump, the agreement is about politics. He set the arbitrary deadline for signatures so that he might have a revised draft agreement to trumpet during the run-up to the November elections. For working people, particularly manufacturing workers and farmers, the show is less important than the substance. And the substance is a very mixed bag. Trump is to be applauded for forcing the renegotiation, despite the hand-wringing of the corporate trade advocates in both parties. In many ways, he had little choice. Working people had paid a huge price under the original NAFTA and demanded change. Labor unions built a large coalition against NAFTA and future agreements like it, including the Trans Pacific Partnership. Sen. Elizabeth Warren led the assault on the outrageous private legal system that NAFTA and other agreements set up for corporations, giving them the right to sue the U.S. before private tribunals with corporate lawyers acting as judges. Sen. Sherrod Brown and Rep. Rosa DeLauro built the coalition that made it clear that the TPP would never gain approval from the Congress. By the time of the 2016 election, every major candidate — Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump — announced their opposition to the TPP and criticized NAFTA. Trump was savvy enough to make trade and NAFTA a centerpiece of his economic argument in the campaign. Trump’s deal makes some significant reforms that should be applauded. It reins in the outrageous Investor State Dispute Settlement, curbing the ability of corporations to use private tribunals to collect millions and attack environmental and health policies. It raises safety standards on trucks coming from Mexico, a significant concern for citizens across the country. AFRICA USA TODAY 33

What Policy for Housing? James D. Shilling DePaul University Within the US, a subject of growing importance for US policy makers is whether this or the next government needs to reign in house prices. Questioning Whether US Housing Prices are in a Bubble Some argue (including Nobel Laureate Robert Shiller) that housing is off on another bubble. These economists point to graphs of US house prices (like the one shown below) and conclude that low interest rates are promoting another housing bubble. Index of US House Prices (in Real Terms), 1880-2015

Source: U.S. Home Price and Related data, for Figure 3.1 in Robert J. Shiller, Irrational Exuberance, 3rd. Edition, Princeton University Press, 2015, as updated by author. This Housing Boom is Different The latest housing boom is different. In January 2006, single-family housing starts in the US peaked at an annual unit rate of 2,273k (see chart below). In April 2009, US housing starts troughed at an annual 478k unit rate. There followed a rather unprecedented intervention by the Fed to boost housing and keep recession at bay, including unusually easy monetary policy and non-conventional monetary policy (dubbed quantitative easing (QE), later becoming QE1, QE2, and QE3) directed not at expanding the Fed’s balance sheet, but at increasing the availability of mortgage credit and thereby boosting the overall demand for homes. In spite of this, as can be seen in the chart below, residential construction in the US has still not reached the average level of new construction over the past 55 years of 1,400k units.

A Simple Supply-and-Demand Argument These considerations lead to a simple explanation which can explain the recent house price movements in many markets. All else being equal, with a below-normal supply, house prices will generally increase. But this raises the question, what, if anything, should be the policy response? Should the US Federal Reserve, for example, raise interest rates and pop the bubble? Or would this simply bring on a recession? Anyway, if consumer prices are stable, should the US Federal reserve even care about house price inflation? It’s Not Just a US Problem Rising house prices is not just a US problem, but a problem directly affecting other countries as well. Consider, for example, the case of the UK housing market. As the chart below makes clear, house prices in the UK are up to 20-25 percent higher today than they were at their peak in the late 2008. 42 AFRICA USA TODAY
