Why not me?

Words of Inspiration Olawale Idreez, Publisher The spirit of sports and sportsmanship have been recognized as the goodwill for mankind across the globe. Goodwill indeed! The Seattle Seahawks cashed in on it superbly good at the 48th Superbowl 2014 in New Jersey, by clubbing the overrated Denver Broncos 43-8, as if the latter wanted to steal the championship trophy from the former. Of course, polisocionomically, it was a positive lucrative business week in Seattle and the 12-Men Team fans. The writer will not forget to accord congratulations. Congratulations, Seahawks. By the way, the 25 year young QB Wilson, has opened an inspiration for many youths out there to listen to the words of wisdom embedded in him that, “Why not you?”. He activated it in his life and won the championship ring that positioned him to be a future Hall of Fame candidate. By the same token, it must echoed in our youths’ ears, that education is the best path to follow if your life will be meaningful. With a sound education, you are pitched towards higher goals in life, rather than being statistically incarcerated in prisons like “Kunta Kinte” in the movie “Roots”. I earnestly and humbly begged and prayed that our youths will write on a piece of paper, “I would rather stay in school, and get the best education, rather than spend the rest of my life in prisons” and paste it on their mirror to look at it everyday. If you don’t think this slogan makes any sense, while you still have an opportunity to make it better for your life, but being dogmatic to do things the wrong way, just go and visit the prisons, and listen to the Blues songs they are singing. I am not, by any definition, making mockery of the prison system, and does recognize that we cannot all be born great, or achieve wisdom, especially from people that have experience in that department. We cannot all be a great QB, or great President ( like President B. H. Obama ), or great FLOTUS ( like Michelle Obama ), or a great Educator or Scholar, or even great Olympic gold medalists. But we all have a opportunity to make a choice, and say, “ Why not me?” I humbly submit happy Black History month to Trinity United Church of Christ, and happy 150th anniversary to great D. L. Moody Church in Chicago and all the people that make life meaningful. Olawale Idreez can be reached at e-mail: usafriglo@yahoo.com. Next topics: “2016, 50th Superbowl, and U.S. elections. The stakes are high” by Olawale Idreez.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sick of hearing about the health care law? Plenty of people have tuned out after all the political jabber and website woes. But now is the time to tune back in, before it's too late. The big deadline is coming March 31. By that day, for the first time, nearly everyone in the United States is required to be signed up for health insurance or risk paying a fine. Here's what you need to know about this month's open enrollment countdown: ___ ALREADY COVERED? NO WORRIES

Most people don't need to do anything. Even before the health care law passed in 2010, more than 8 out of 10 U.S. residents had coverage, usually through their workplace plans or the government's Medicare or Medicaid programs. Some have private policies that meet the law's requirements. If you're already covered that way, you meet the law's requirements. Since October, about 4 million people have signed up for private plans through the new state and federal marketplaces, the Obama administration says, although it's not clear how many were already insured elsewhere. In addition, many poor adults now have Medicaid coverage for the first time through expansions of the program in about half the states. President Barack Obama is urging people who have coverage to help any uninsured friends and relatives get signed up. ___ NEED COVERAGE? IT'S CRUNCH TIME Chances are you'll hear more reminders about health care this month. The push is on to reach millions of uninsured people. Opinion: Housing investment is key to helping homeless vets

New rules limit terms, fees

U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., cites an initiative by President Barack Obama and Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki to end veteran homelessness by 2015. One in 10 homeless veterans lives in Los Angeles, according to Waxman, who calls for a "housing first" approach to solve the problem. In Los Angeles County, Project 60 has taken chronically homeless veterans and given them public housing, case managers and access to services, resulting in a 95% housing-retention rate, he writes. Los Angeles Daily News/Los Angeles (11/13)

for mortgages

Trends in Housing Most victims of foreclosure stay close to home The breadth of the 2008 recession prompted most people who lost their homes to remain in the same area. In 2009 and 2010, fewer than 11 million people left their home counties, the lowest levels since 1947, according to the Census Bureau. A UCLA study found that in 2010, more that 24 million people made moves within their towns, many to cheaper housing. Minority groups are disproportionately affected by these forced moves, according to the Center for Responsible Lending. USA Today (11/13)

Opinion: In-law units a key piece in affordable-housing puzzle Affordable-housing advocate Saul Bloom calls for San Francisco to create a comprehensive policy for the construction of secondary units, often called "in-law apartments," in the city. "A comprehensive program to permit new secondary units, along with a path for code compliance for currently illegal ones, would create thousands of units of affordable housing, hundreds of jobs and make existing ones safer," writes Bloom, executive director of Arc Ecology, a nonprofit focused on environmental and economic sustainability. San Francisco Chronicle (free content) (11/11)

Mortgage regulations stemming from the Dodd-Frank Act will require that loans be fully amortized within 30 years and fees be limited to 3% of the total loan amount. New documentation rules and other changes meant to protect consumers may make it tougher for low-income homebuyers to secure financing. The New York Times (tiered subscription model) (11/7)

Fla. county gives green incentives to businesses but not homeowners The Pinellas County Commission recently voted to exclude homeowners from its energy-saving program, which offers loans for solar panels and other environmentally friendly upgrades. Critics of the decision to include only businesses say the loan program would help homeowners who are underwater add value to their properties. Tampa Bay Times (St. Petersburg, Fla.) (11/12)

Location, Location, Location Court ruling is a blow to low-income housing The ruling by a three-judge panel in New Jersey to deny a plan for 292 multifamily homes, including 59 for low- and moderate-income people, is a "roundhouse kick" to affordable-housing efforts, according to

Managing Nigeria Road/Rail Transportation for Economic and Social Development Forum This is Nigeria Transporters’ capacity building and study tour of U.S. transportation systems which will open doors for export of road transportation/rail equipment to Nigeria. Once again, we have created another opportunity for many American businesses to meet qualified African businesses with capacity to do business with their counterparts. Africa is the last development frontier in the world, with about 1 billion in population and no less than 400 million middle class, and very rich in mineral and natural resources. Today America is losing market share in Africa to the countries of BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) because these countries marketed Africa to their business communities as a trade and investment destination. On the contrary, American media has projected Africa to American businesses as a continent filled with all the negative things like wars, poverty, and disease, and with lack of purchasing power. But Africa is very rich in mineral, natural, and human resources today. There are about 56,000 American companies doing business in China with a single company of Wal-Mart doing about $18 billion turnover annually. Europe runs an annual trade deficit of $100 billion with China. These are among the reasons for the rapid development of China. African countries are working hard to improve business environments to attract western companies to bring accelerated economic development to Africa. The low level of U.S. investment in Africa can be reversed through an increase of private-sector or commercial loans from U.S.A. to deserving entrepreneurs in Africa. Private sector is the engine of growth of any economy. Africa should be an investment destination for the Americans. The Diaspora community should lead the majority to Africa. America is still the only superpower of the world, the strongest economy in the world that has everything that African countries need for their development. Chicago is the hub of financial services, manufacturing industries, transportation network, tourism, and a world-class international airport that serves as a gateway to the world. It is becoming clear and certain daily that the U.S.A. has to educate the American business community aggressively about the great potentials in Africa, particularly in the non-oil sector. Most countries if not all the countries that are growing today are focusing on the African countries in addition to their home economies, and America should do the same. Thinking globally, think Africa, and please invest and trade with Nigeria. 12 Africa US Today

Taking on too much, or too little, debt. Not all debt is bad. It can enable you to return to school, buy much-needed professional outfits before receiving your first paycheck, or even cover your rent during a tough month. Being so afraid of debt that you avoid it altogether can force you to miss out on opportunities, while taking on too much can lead to financial ruin.

A Modern-Day Abolitionist on Fighting Slave Power By Joshua Keating

Biram Dah Abeid. Courtesy of Freedom House

While there are nearly 30 million people living in some form of slavery the world today, there is no country where it is as prevalent or as institutionalized as in Mauritania. While statistics on the number of people living in slavery in the country are hard to come by, numbers cited by the U.S. State Department put it at up to 20 percent of the population. Slavery was formally abolished in 1981—Mauritania was the last country in the world to do so—and criminalized in 2007, but human rights groups say enforcement of the laws has been rare to nonexistent and full chattel slavery as well as slavelike working conditions persist in many parts of the country, sanctioned by legal codes from the Middle Ages. Here’s how the NGO Anti-Slavery International describes the institution: Slavery has existed in Mauritania for hundreds of years and is deeply rooted within society across the

country. The Haratine are the group most affected by slavery practices and are traditionally owned by Bidane, or white moors, the minority ruling elite of Arab-Berber descent in Mauritania. Historically the white moors raided and enslaved people from the indigenous black population and today, all cases of slavery in Mauritania involve people whose ancestors were enslaved before them. Slavery status is an inherited status. This age-old distinction underpins the very nature of slavery in Mauritania .

Recording Artist and Songwriter YEMI MARIE Named “Most Promising Teen Producer” at Chicago Music Awards CHICAGO – Teen singer Yemi Marie was named “Most Promising Teen Producer” at the Chicago Music Awards that took place on Sunday, February 23, at the Copernicus Center at 5216 West Lawrence Avenue in Chicago. The talented 17-year old was surprised by the honor. “I am thrilled to be recognized by the Chicago Music Awards,” says the teenager with the golden voice. “It was such a pleasure for me to be among the biggest and most talented from Chicago’s music community.” The awards ceremony celebrated the 33rd Anniversary of the Chicago Music Awards. During the program, Yemi performed her hot new single, “Radio Station,” from her new recording that is scheduled for release the end of March 2014. “Radio Station” is a bouncy tune with a youthful vibe and catchy lyrics and melody that features rap from Chicago artist GT. Yemi co-wrote the lyrics and co-produced the song, which is being played on the Comcast Music Choice R&B/Hip-Hop Channel, a notable accomplishment for the young music maker. To the delight of her fans, Yemi Marie’s ramped-up remix of her popular anti-violence single “Draw the Line” is now being played on V103 (102.7 FM) and the Comcast Music Choice. Another popular Yemi Marie single, “Saturday,” is being played on Sirius XM Radio and Clear Channel’s iHeart Radio network, in addition to getting regular spins on Chicago’s WKKC 89.3 FM. Yemi will be performing at the 2014 Black Women’s Expo March 28-30 at McCormick Place. On Friday, March 28, she will present her anti-bullying campaign during the Expo’s Teen Summit. In 2013, the vibrant young singer and songwriter shared the stage with R&B legend Chaka Khan, launched an anti-bullying campaign in Chicago schools, and generated media coverage across the board in print and broadcast. She also performed on her first advertisement, an ad for Medical Professionals for Home Health Care that aired on BET, CNN and the Family Channel, among other networks. “It was an incredible year for me. I truly appreciate the support of my family and my fans, and the guidance of my manager mom,” says the humble teen. “Without the love and support of my family, Starguide Network and our fantastic Prize Music Entertainment team, I would not be living my dream as I pursue a successful music career,” says Yemi Marie. “I am excited about the possibilities for 2014 and look forward to writing some great songs and creating incredible music that will make a difference in the lives of young people and my fans and followers of all ages.” Yemi Marie has been interviewed on WVON Radio numerous times and she participated in Columbia College Chicago’s 2013 Holly Jolly Trolley radio and television broadcasts and food drive. Articles about Yemi Marie have been published in the Chicago Defender newspaper, Northwestern University newspaper and in the Chicago Tribune’s MASH student newspaper that is distributed in 2,600 schools in the Chicago Metro area. Last spring, Yemi performed each day on the Black Women’s Expo’s main stage. Over the summer Yemi participated in dozens of summer concerts, festivals and anti-bullying events. She also sang along the entire route of the Bud Billiken Parade, a Chicago back-to-school tradition that attracted more than a million people and culminated with a festival in Washington Park. It is the second largest parade in the country and was televised on Chicago’s ABC 7 and superstation WGN TV. Last summer, Yemi Marie performed at half time during a WNBA Chicago Sky game at the All State Arena. And she did the opening performance at The Dinner Party event at Chicago City Winery. The dinner “conversation” that followed the performance featured actor David Eigenberg from NBC’s “Chicago Fire,” who is also known for his role on “Sex and the City”; Robert Falls, artistic director of The Goodman Theater, and Second City Comedienne Katie Rich. She also went on her first promotional road trip to Atlanta and Orlando, where she performed on the “Upbeat Dancer Show,” which is available nationwide via the Internet. As a child, Yemi Marie sang in her grammar school’s talent show, wowing fellow students and teachers with her take on “A Song for Mama,” made famous by Grammy Award-winning Boyz II Men. Influenced by fellow Chicagoan Jennifer Hudson, as well as Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Beyoncé and Whitney Houston, the teen worked hard to develop her own style and fine-tune her song-writing skills. She has performed before crowds both large and small while honing her vocal abilities and stage presence. In 2012, Yemi Marie was named Top Talent by the Talent Shines International Talent Convention. Her performances, for which she earned top scores against thousands of contestants, were broadcast live around the globe from Disney World in Orlando. For more information and to book Yemi Marie for an appearance, check out www.yemimarie.com or call Lynn Norment Media, 312-427-3121.

OSCARS LIVE: winners, losers and reaction from the 2014 Academy Awards On February 29th, 1940, at the Coconut Grove in downtown Los Angeles, Gone with the Wind won ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The Best Supporting Actress prize was introduced by I received a letter from a girl and I’d like to share just a small part of it with you: "Dear Lupita," it reads, "I think you’re really lucky to be this Black but yet this successful in Hollywood overnight. I was just about to buy Dencia’s Whitenicious cream to lighten my skin when you appeared on the world map and saved me." My heart bled a little when I read those words. I could never have guessed that my first job out of school would be so powerful in and of itself and that it would propel me to be such an image of hope in the same way that the women of The Color Purple were to me.

Fay Bainter, who had won the previous year for Jezebel, and was awarded to Hattie McDaniel, the first black winner in the Oscars’ history. McDaniel’s speech was reportedly written for her by either David O Selznick’s office or MetroGoldwyn-Mayer, and wasn’t, purely in terms of its content, all that memorable. Editorial Reviews

About the Author It was during his time at Northeastern, about '86-'87, that Idreez heard Harold Washington speak to the students during his run for re-election as mayor. Idreez found himself captivated by the political nature of Washington's words and how well he spoke English. This experience is what motivated Idreez to switch from continuing his education in accounting to political science. Although Idreez imagined himself as a well-to-do politician, it was this academic path that steered his love towards writing through the work he put into his thesis. He fell in love with the craft of writing and followed his heart forward from there. Idreez is a smartly dressed man, who chuckles easily and speaks pointedly about what he believes in. He was involved with the production of two papers post-college: The African Voice and Afrik. He also took a job at The Celebrity International magazine. Although he enjoyed freelancing for these publications, he hoped that instead of writing for other people he could begin his own publication, and one day would. Idreez's family in Nigeria used to tease him about wanting to be a journalist, because his English has never been very good. People also told him he would make more money pursuing a career in accounting. But Idreez had his mind set on being a writer- nothing else. He compares this experience to a Bible passage that says a prophet is not without honor except in his own house or hometown. Although initially his family didn't agree with his decision, they've not only grown to support him- but also write him letters requesting that Idreez write letters to the government of their state in Nigeria, and focus more of his work on African happenings. Idreez says he just laughs. "Whatever you do in life, if you persevere- then people have no choice to see that and respect what you're doing." 34 Africa US Today
