Swifty’s—Palm Beach Style The clubby society hangout gets a new life at the Colony Hotel

BRANTLEY PHOTO

Somewhere in his afterlife, Glenn Bernbaum is smiling, nearly half a century after he created Mortimer’s—a famous New York City restaurant that was the ultimate social club in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. Mortimer’s was an establishment that in its highest form was an exclusive address for society figures looking to elude tourists, and in its lowest, a snub to B-listers and lesser souls. But all this time later, it continues to live, albeit in a much more inclusive and sunny atmosphere. Bright, vibrant and pinkalicious, Swifty’s POOL opened in The Colony Palm Beach in September Swifty’s POOL at The Colony 2020 with much fanfare, and today it’s looking to create even more waves as it enters its second year serving lunch, dinner and cocktails around the boutique hotel’s pool. Last year, the space became a go-to spot for live music and bingo and trivia nights; for its sophomore year, guests can expect an amplified version of those experiences. A reincarnation of a former New York City restaurant that was owned by the former chef and maître d’ of Mortimer’s, Swifty’s POOL was in a fortunate position of having a line of followers even before its doors opened. In 1999, the original Swifty’s was founded on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and attracted patrons who craved privacy, exclusivity and a never-before-experienced version of meat loaf (more on that dish later). Named after a pug that was owned by Mortimer’s owner Bernbaum, Swifty’s regulars included Aerin Lauder, Michael Kors and Gwyneth Paltrow. So when the New York landmark closed its doors after a 15-year run, co-owners Stephen Attoe and Robert Caravaggi—alumni of the late Bernbaum’s boîte—knew it would only be a matter of time before it reopened. Little did they know it would take place on Palm Beach and alongside a new generation of hospitality creators. “We felt it was possible to revive the brand because of the great relationships we built with our patrons that continued even after the restaurant closed,” Caravaggi says. “I thought it was a possibility, but I had no idea when.” “When” came soon enough, in 2016, when New York City couple Andrew and Sarah Wetenhall took ownership of the iconic Colony Hotel. Andrew, an investment banker, and Sarah, a public relations executive, had a deep history with the property (Andrew’s father, Robert, was a

22

former part-owner of the hotel), so the two had frequented the Colony for years. Upon their acquisition, they set out to reposition the hotel as the glamorous, posh spot they remembered it being, but this time with reinvigorated vibes. One of the first orders of business was finding a culinary concept that felt familiar but had a certain type of sophistication that would endear itself to both the classic generation of Palm Beachers as well as a newer one. “The Swifty’s brand and the Colony fundamentally have a similar ethos,” Sarah says. “We both want our guests to feel at home and have a little bit of ownership in this place.” Anointed as a club without dues, Swifty’s opened on the island in 2019 as a seasonal pop-up concept inside the hotel in the oval room adjacent to the lobby. Today, in a fresh, Kemble Interiors-designed outdoor space complete with a 1,625-square-foot hanging garden by Unique Forest Arts, it’s become a year-round destination for those seeking classic American cuisine with clever twists. Sarah gives full credit to Caravaggi and the culinary team around him, which includes Attoe and the Colony Executive Chef Tom Whitaker. “One of the key components that makes Swifty’s so very special is the interplay between guests,” she says. “That type of table architecture always resulted in an amazing night and experience. Seeing guests interact with each other and how that naturally occurs is really special and adds to the dining experience.” Swifty’s employs an intricate formula to create a warm yet sophisticated vibe, an equation that feels as detailed as the second law of thermodynamics. There are several variables at play, like the number of guests, their familiarity with each other—or lack thereof—weather conditions and more, that can make or break an experience. It may sound complicated, but it’s second nature for Caravaggi. “I like to think of the dining experience like a symphony,” he says. “You need all the components to get a great atmosphere. It requires a conductor to bring it all together. You need to look at your equipment—in our case, reservations—and seat guests in a way to create some sort of tension. And usually it’s really good tension. Guests are aware of it, and they feel important. Then the staff takes over. All of this together, plus the food, makes for an unforgettable meal.”

SWIFTY’S VANILLA MERINGUE CAKE RECIPE For Each Cake Layer: 1 cup flour 2/3 cup sugar 4 eggs Whip eggs and sugar until ribbon (very light and fluffy, pale yellow). Sift flour. Fold flour into egg mixture. Butter and flour a 9-inch cake pan. Pour batter into pan and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit on low fan until golden brown, about 20 minutes. Remove and let cool in pan.

and whisk. Temper milk into egg mixture. Pour mixture back into pot and heat until mixture thickens, constantly stirring so you don’t burn the bottom. Cut butter into cubes and put on the bottom of a clean large stainless-steel bowl. Pour pastry cream over butter. Strain if necessary. Mix until combined. Cover with plastic, store in cooler. For the filling: Whisk together heavy cream and pastry cream until thick. Fill between each layer of cake.

BRANTLEY PHOTO

For the Cream Filling:

Fiori di Zucca Con Mozzarella from Swifty’s

2 cups milk ¼ cup white sugar 2 egg yolks 1 egg ¼ cup cornstarch ¼ cup white sugar 2 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Mix milk, ¼ cup sugar and vanilla in pot and boil. In a large stainless-steel bowl, whisk together ¼ cup sugar and cornstarch. Add eggs, yolks

For the Meringue: 1 ½ cups heavy cream 1 cup pastry cream 1 cup sugar 4 egg whites 1 ½ teaspoon lemon juice Whisk whites, sugar and lemon juice until medium peaks (glossy and fluffy). Cover the cake with meringue (rustic, leaving decorative peaks on the top). Torch meringue. 8 slices per cake.

Ah, the food. The menu at Swifty’s POOL is reminiscent of the one that made the original New York restaurant so popular, but with infusions of Florida. The high-level home-styled offerings eschew trendy, of-the-moment choices (you won’t find Beyond Burgers or kale here) and instead champion tried-and-true dishes in elevated presentations. Think shrimp cocktail, crab cakes and meat loaf, the latter of which is listed on the menu as Designer Meatloaf, in appreciation of the fashion designer Bill Blass’ original recipe. The Florida incarnation of Swifty’s includes more local seafood, including Atlantic tripletail. Though Swifty’s isn’t the only notable Northeast transplant that’s made its way to Palm Beach as of late, perhaps what’s allowing Swifty’s to live in dining lore is not so much that it’s a place as it is an idea, a concept whose expression transcends generations, social classes and, in this case, location. “We wanted the hotel and restaurant to give a healthy dose of nostalgia,” Sarah says. “It’s about triangulating this intersection with the past, but for this generation. It’s a healthy dose of taking a heritage brand and bringing that forward in the best possible way while being an inclusive space for all people and all ages, and respecting the past.” WORTH AVENUE

As the global pandemic and ensuing lockdown reaffirmed the immeasurable comfort that our homes can give us, cottagecore became a way of not only designing but coping, as idle homemaking became less about escapism and more about an inescapable reality. Here are some ideas on how to bring and maintain a cottagecore-inspired home.

Change is Good How to update your home By Nila Do Simon

A home is a sanctuary, a place to recharge, gather and live with family and friends. It should evolve just as you and your family do in your everyday life, says Joy Jalaeikhoo, chief creative officer and managing partner at Palm Beach Design Masters. Here, she offers essential interior design advice to update your abode.

REMOVE CLUTTER. You would be amazed at how just cleaning and organizing your home or a room will make it feel bigger, brighter and newer. ADD NEW LIGHTING. Lighting a dark corner or including a lamp will brighten your space. For more impact, add recessed lighting to your ceiling, which is available in a variety of applications, such as track lighting, under- and over-counter, and canned or recessed. REPLACE HARDWARE. For bathrooms and kitchens, simply changing out the hardware on your cabinets can transform the space. SPICE IT UP WITH NEW PILLOWS. More color or a gorgeous pattern can change the look of your room. For even bigger impact, rearrange your furniture. You’ll be amazed at how different the room feels. TRY NEW PAINT OR WALLPAPER. It’s one of the best ways to make your home feel new and modern, as well as fresh and exciting.

PAINT BY NUMBERS This William R. Eubanks (1 Via Parigi, 561/805-9335)-designed home salutes Old World finds, capped with a painting from the Studio of Anthony van Dyck

ACCESSORIZE WITH CARE. A few carefully placed items can go a long way to create that beautiful finishing touch, but overdoing it can make the room look cramped and cluttered.

To add your name to the beach cleanup, submit your e-mail address to faith@worthavenue.com with Beach Cleanup in the subject line.

CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING NOV. 30, 2021

Each Holiday Season, Santa Claus, his elves and performers deck the halls at Worth Avenue’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting, which marks the unofficial start to Palm Beach’s shopping season. In years past, the Worth Avenue Association and Town of Palm Beach officials have headlined a festive annual parade down Worth Avenue and a night of holiday cheer. The parade traditionally precedes the fateful flip of a switch that lights the magnificent 40-foot tree. The 2020 iteration of the annual Christmas Tree Lighting was held virtually; for details on the 2021 lighting, be sure to keep your eyes on www.worth-avenue.com.

Vias: A Little Avenue Magic The Worth Avenue vias are hidden courtyards along the Avenue—full of surprises and charm VIA AMORE:

FIND IT: Between Lilly Pulitzer and Arcature Fine Art , 200 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: “Amore” is Italian for love, which perfectly describes the romantic feel of one of Worth Avenue’s largest vias. Cascading tree branches brush the walls of the via, while sculptures and art lend it its classical character. Wrought iron gates encompass the walls of the first entrance, and statues and fountains line each terrace. Lost? Be on the lookout for the mosaic compass on the ground near a quiet bistro surrounded by trees, flowers and twinkling lights. Additionally, make sure to spot the can’t-miss mural in the via before enjoying a delicious lunch.

VIA MARIO:

FIND IT: Between Maus & Hoffman and Ralph Lauren, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Small but beautiful, Via Mario feels like it was beamed from an Italian piazza. A fountain greets you at the entrance, and the pathway leads you to a serene Roman goddess sculpture. If you want to have a secluded daydreamy moment, Via Mario is the place for you.

VIA PARIGI:

VIAS 22.indd 38

FIND IT: Between Brown Harris Stevens and Il Papiro, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Via Parigi mixes the beauty of South Florida and Europe with Old World architecture and tropical palm trees lining the narrow entrance path, opening to a beautiful Parisian-inspired courtyard. The intricate mosaic staircase is one of Via Parigi’s alluring features, and the many balconies add to its European charm. A fountain is the centerpiece of Via Parigi, surrounded by abstract iron statues of the four seasons.

VIA ROMA:

FIND IT: Between Raptis Rare Books and Mariko, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Via Roma is small and simple, but it is the perfect spot to relax and stargaze after a shop-till-you-drop afternoon on Worth Avenue. When you reach the end of the thin corridor, be sure to look up at

Above left, Via Amore, right, Via Mizner

the intricate skylight that shines almost as brightly as the jewelry in the window of H.T. Stuart Jewelers and Mariko.

VIA BICE:

FIND IT: By Trillion, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Via Bice’s blue-andwhite arched walkway leads you to a courtyard with a replica of the Venus de Milo. The via, which has recently undergone a renovation— including a lush arbor—is most notable for Bice, the see-and-be-seen restaurant with authentic Italian cuisine. And you can snag a table outside in its romantic courtyard to fully absorb the via’s vibe.

VIA MIZNER:

FIND IT: Between Select Fine Art and Style Paris, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: The words “Via Mizner” engraved into a small fountain, a testament to the man who once lived there, atop the shops—Addison Mizner himself. One of the most unique aspects of the via is its small graves, home to Mizner’s pet monkey Johnnie Brown, and Laddie, a dog

that belonged to a later Mizner apartment owner, Rose Sachs. While this via certainly has historical significance, it is also home to Renato’s, Worth Avenue’s most romantic restaurant. Sit outside by the glowing lanterns and string lights while dining on superb Continental cuisine.

VIA NEWSOME

FIND IT: Between Courage B and East Coast Jewelry, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Before you enter the via, look up at the entrance and spot the regal lion head staring down at you and the vintage architecture and columns surrounding it.Via Newsome is home to a classic Dionysian statue surrounded by exotic orchids—pearl white when in full bloom.

VIA ENCANTADA

FIND IT: 200 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: This whimsical via has been transformed by the Upper East Side French bistro Le Bilboquet, a Manhattan transplant that is as lovely as it is delicious.

For Men Only

| BY GREGG BELETSKY

THE CLASSIC BLAZER

Retail Therapy

Exploring Worth Avenue turns up distinctive gifts—or musthave staples—that are essential for the well-dressed man. Recently, I found myself in a situation common to a lot of men shopping on the Avenue: sitting idly in a boutique while my best friend edited her selections from the new spring line, weighing in every now and then (but only when encouraged). As the seamstress came out with pincushions and podium, I knew this was not going to be a quick process, or one in which I was needed any longer. Having worked on the Avenue for the past 20 years, I decided to take this opportunity to “shop” the Avenue as a “shopper” and look at it from the outside in, rather than the inside looking out. Not to mention I could use a little something myself; it’s been a long two years online. With water bottle in hand and only a text away, I left her standing on the podium surrounded by mirrors under the watchful eye of a talented seamstress who was just starting the pinning stage. With a smile and a wave in the mirror, I was gone! One of the beauties of “The Avenue” is that it’s only three short blocks under the shade of swaying palm trees, lined with smaller curated shops sprinkled among national luxury brand names. Just window-shopping is entertainment here or, as we locals often say, “If you haven’t been to Worth Avenue, then you haven’t been to Palm Beach!” While there are numerous shops and vias to explore, these were a few of my “finds” as I shopped the Avenue for things I think would appeal to most men: special, distinctive, classic. I challenge you to explore with your wish lists and report back! Here are a few of my picks:

42

Update your navy blazer with a royal blue jacket in a blend of vicuña (famous for its softness), cashmere and silk—an absolute staple going into season. Avaliable at Brioni

LUXE KICKS Silver or gold bullion embroidery elevates your Stubbs & Wootton custom slipper to the next level and is done by the same house, London’s Hand and Lock (established 1767), that embroiders for the British Royal Family and British Armed Forces.

UNCOMMON SCENTS With an over-generous dose of musky amber, noble citrus and black tea from China, this Louis Vuitton fragrance called Imagination is my new go-to fragrance! And I love the travel size.

SWIM STYLE Vilebrequin’s water-reactive line is both playful and ingenius. This season, they like the Moorea Poulpes octopus shorts: “Octopuses hold the key to power on the Moorea Poulpes water-reactive men’s swim shorts. Their graphic tentacles are revealed in a tone-on-tone color on wet fabric, but are invisible on the plain fabric when dry. Comfortable with a designer look, these shorts have three pockets and a drawstring tie with tips at the waist.”

TAKING FLIGHT Inspired by a vintage Tiffany & Co. logo first used on silverware designs at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago, this canvas Tiffany flight bag says classic style—on the go.

OFF THE CUFF These cushion-shaped “Bentley blue” silver and enamel cufflinks are handmade in England by Deakin and Francis. Avaliable at Bettteridge

GIN GAME What better way to wrap up a day on the Avenue than at Renato’s courtyard! With my best friend and my signature drink—stirred, not shaken—and always gin!

The island of Palm Beach

or more than a century, Palm Beach has been the golden dream of Florida. Hovering in a delicate stratosphere of wealth, beauty and well-ordered privilege, it is an island of sweeping ocean-to-lake mansions, soaring razor-edged ficus hedges, RollsRoyces parked cheek to jowl with Bentleys and Lambos and the obligatory white Range Rovers. It is the place of Kennedys and Lauders and Phipps, aging actors and titans of Wall Street. Of The Breakers and Chanel and Tiffany’s and Sotheby’s. A place of myth and history, Gloria Swanson and Joe Kennedy rendezvousing in a Ta-boo bathroom, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor holing up at the Colony, Marjorie Merriweather Post teaching people to square dance in a gilded ballroom. It is our Newport, our last link to aristocracy and now, even a century after Henry Flagler created it, it is having yet another moment. In fact, Palm Beach is on fire. An article in the Palm Beach Daily News (aka “The Shiny Sheet” for its thoughtful use of slick paper over smudgy newsprint) from earlier this year noted “Brokers and agents may be running out of adjectives to precisely describe Palm Beach’s real estate market these days. activity that has even seasoned real estate observers, well, agog.” During the first quarter of 2021, home sales “exceeded $1.2 billion— a record, according to the analysis released by the Corcoran Group.” The article went on to point out a “median transaction price” of $7.2 million” compared to $5.1 million the year before. Reports for a local law firm showed that the top 10 sales prices “all recorded at more than $46 million.” The skyrocketing sales prices extend to condos as well, and underscore the surging popularity of Palm Beach, partly fueled by a post-pandemic migration south from wealthy northern enclaves, and perhaps partly fueled by a rediscovery of sorts. Longtime revered New York dining establishments are now opening on the island, the winter “season” has extended its stay into summer, and post-pandemic people are gravitating to a place of grace and calm and simple, carefully preserved beauty. After all, there is no other place like Palm Beach, with its tiny but tasteful commercial districts (if you can call them that), its turquoise waters, its grand hotels and tropical foliage. Its jewel has always been its main shopping boulevard, Worth Avenue, with its hidden vias and couture and fine dining and bougainvillea-draped stonework facades. It is a charmed world unto itself, Palm Beach, and here are some of the ways to rediscover its magic.

The Good Life WORTH AVENUE

Worth Avenue continues its long tradition of a bastion of the good life; here are a few examples.

SPARKLE

The Avenue, as Worth Avenue is called, has a wide array of international names in jewelry, from Graff to Tiffany’s to Hamilton and Betteridge and Trianon Seaman Schepps—and many more. There is a reason there are so many jewelry stores; this is where people go to frost themselves. Which includes even the younger set, where Tiffany reports its established “Tiffany T” and “Hardwear” and new “Tiffany Knot” collections are trending.

HMF, THE SEAFOOD BAR, THE VIEW

The Gilded Age Italian Renaissance icon, The Breakers, is a muststop on the Palm Beach tour—starting with a stroll through the ornate lobby with its soaring hand-painted ceilings and then perhaps to the Seafood Bar for a drink and a dazzling ocean view. HMF at The Breakers offers true glamour in a retro cocktail setting, and there are lovely shops as well, including Lilly Pulitzer and Guerlain.

SELF-CENTERED BLISS

Eau Spa at the Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa may not be technically on the island, but it will transport you to one in about six seconds once you get rolling. This luxurious spa offers literally everything from tip to tail—facials, lavish massages, hair, body, nails, bath rituals, private bungalows, the famous Self-Centered Garden and on and on. This is one (Forbes Five Star) spa experience not to be missed.

COUTURE

Worth Avenue has its longtime island vibe, but it’s also the place for impossibly chic and exclusive fashion, with international names like Chanel, Gucci and Louis Vuitton nestled right up to mom-and-pop shops like Marley’s and Kassatly’s and Maus & Hoffman. Whatever your style, Worth Avenue has it.

LIMO TOURS

Take a walking, driving or biking tour of the island with your own private guide through Leslie Diver’s Island Living Tours (561/868-7944; islandlivingpb.com). Driving tours range from 90 minutes to 2.5 hours and include a walk through the vias on Worth Avenue. Biking tours (bikes not included—you can rent them at the Palm Beach Bicycle Trail Shop) are 90 minutes each, and are a great way to ogle the Island’s grand landmarked estates designed by the “Fab Four” of esteemed Palm Beach architects: Addison Mizner, Marion Sims Wyeth, John Volk and Maurice Fatio.

WALKING TOUR

Every Wednesday between December and April, the Worth Avenue Association presents hour-long walking tours of the Avenue with historian Rick Rose. These lively tours explore the origins and character of Worth Avenue, its unique architecture, the historical significance of many of its legendary landmarks and some of its famous residents. For more details, see page 34.

Beach Day Nothing says “island” better than a day on the beach swimming, snorkeling and windsurfing in the aquamarine ocean at the foot of Worth Avenue. And for lunchtime you can towel off, shower, jump into your clothes and wander up Worth Avenue and snag a casual lunch at Pizza Al Fresco (14 Via Mizner). And for ice cream? Piccolo Gelato is a sure thing (66 Via Mizner, 561/814-5966).

Places to Take the Kids [ 1 ] Playgrounds, fields and tennis courts are all at the Town of Palm

Beach’s Seaview Recreation Center. (340 Seaview Ave., 561/8385485)

[ 2 ] The beach at Phipps Ocean Park features grassy shade, picnic facilities and a playground, all on the Atlantic Ocean. (2145 S. Ocean Blvd., 561/585-9203) [ 3 ] The Palm Beach County History Museum is housed in the restored 1916 Courthouse in downtown West Palm Beach. Exhibitions feature county history, along with profiles of the people and events that made the area. (300 N. Dixie Highway, 561/832-4164)

Five Landmark Houses In Palm Beach [ 1 ] Arguably the most famous house in Palm Beach aside from the Flagler Museum is Mar-a-Lago, which was once the “Winter White House” of Donald Trump. It was built in 1924-1927 and originally owned by socialite and heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Now a private club, the property includes a 20,000-square-foot ballroom and a luxurious beach club. 1100 S. Ocean Blvd.

[ 2 ] The “ham-and-cheese house,” nicknamed for its alter-

nating bands of red brick and coral keystone, was originally called Casa Eleda and was built in 1928. It was designed by Maurice Fatio, the architect to Rockefellers and Vanderbilts, whose opulent homes inspired Cole Porter to say, “I want to live on Maurice Fatio’s patio.” 920 S. Ocean Blvd.

[ 3 ] The “John Lennon house” was bought by Lennon and Yoko Ono in

1980, the same year the former Beatle was murdered. Its proper name is El Solano, and it was built in 1919 and designed by society architect Addison Mizner. Both Mizner and Harold K. Vanderbilt lived in the house at different times, but Lennon and Ono bought the house from socialite Brownie McLean, who had famously (and unwittingly) rented the estate at one time to Larry Flynt, the publisher of Hustler magazine. Yoko Ono sold the house in 1986. 720 S. Ocean Blvd.

[ 4 ] The former Kennedy family estate in Palm Beach, Florida, was

once a Winter White House and family compound and, later, the setting for the infamous Kennedy rape trial in the 1990s. The house has 200 feet of ocean frontage and was built in the 1920s. Joseph P. Kennedy bought the estate in 1941, and John F. Kennedy is said to have written his Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Profiles in Courage, at the

According to the Palm Beach Daily News, the “house got its name from the ducks that roosted on what was once an extensive freshwater marsh on the east side of the house.” The News says the house was expanded “over the years—including additions by society architects Marion Sims Wyeth and John L. Volk” and won a prestigious award from the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach for a recent renovation effort. 303 Maddock Way

The Face of Polo’s Reigning Queen MELISSA GANZI

Grand Champions Polo Club Melissa Ganzi fell in love with the game of polo the minute she hit her first polo ball in 1993 when she was dating her husband, Marc. Wally Ganzi, Marc’s father was playing competitive polo and got them both hooked on the game. A few years later, Wally gave Melissa a polo pony for her birthday and she started playing the sport. The rest is history, says the “Polo Queen,” and cofounder of the World Polo League. “Marc and I saw a need to fill the void in American Polo, and we decided to make a difference. From our perspective, having 26-goal polo in the United States was key to the preservation—as well as the future— of the sport, especially as this is the highest level of polo played in the world, outside of Argentina. We have had a well-established polo club in Wellington for several years, so we used The Grand Champions Polo Club to host the World Polo League (WPO),” says Melissa. “Polo is my passion and way of life. I could not have been happier to play last season after battling Stage 2 breast cancer. It was the most wonderful feeling to be back on the field after the humbling experience of being a patient and a cancer survivor,” she says. “I will be playing polo again this season in The World Polo League.” This year spectators at Grand Champions Polo Club in Wellington can look forward to truly being entertained and impressed with the majestic equine athletes. “2022 will be filled with excitement, surprises and unforgettable polo,” says Melissa.

Marina opened her first boutique in Saint Barthélemy, which she considers to be the most beautiful island to exist. “Here, I can rest and recharge my batteries in harmony with nature.” However, Mother Nature wasn’t always so endearing to Marina, who is a survivor of the Thailand tsunami in December of 2004. “If I hadn’t gone through the tsunami, I wouldn’t have taken any risks in my life. It gave me a real path,”Marina explains. Her tragedy is the inspiration behind pursuing her lifelong passion, starting her own brand. In her boutiques you will find her own line of Italian linen and silk, opulent fine jewelry, Panama hats, and fragrances nostalgic to St. Barth. “You need to come in and discover for yourself. ANN NORTON SCULPTURE GARDENS, WEST PALM BEACH

ACQUA CAFÉ,

THE BREAKERS,

2875 S. OCEAN BLVD., PALM BEACH

1 S. COUNTY ROAD, 561/655-6611

The eagerly anticipated Acqua Cafe, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant that focuses on seafood, is making its debut this fall. The brainchild of Arlene Desiderio and Jose Duran, who have built staples such as Renato’s and Pizza Al Fresco, is bound to be a hit on the island with a raw bar and an eclectic menu of Mediterranean-infused fare based on organic ingredients from local farms and sources.

The iconic Breakers is a destination unto itself with a wide range of dining options, each one excellent. Here is a brief synopsis: • HMF is the grand hotel’s sumptuous “cocktail couture” destination featuring handcrafted and vintage cocktails, a warm and clubby vibe and exquisite small plates (everything from Hong Kong dumplings to SoCal fish tacos). • The Italian Restaurant is

the resort’s family-friendly option with a wide array of Italian favorites. • Seafood Bar is one of The Breakers’ iconic rooms, with spanking fresh seafood, an aquarium bar and jaw-dropping ocean views. • The Circle is an architectural gem that welcomes guests for daily breakfast and a spectacular Sunday Brunch—a Palm Beach tradition not to be missed.

For starters, the rails on the bar are secured by the trunks of brass elephants. There are hand-painted murals on the ceilings. The lighting is low—and a little dangerous (in a good way). Sunday Fundays feature endless visits to the gourmet Ketel One Bloody Mary Bar, beer garden and a personal favorite, the Veuve Clicquot Rich Champagne Garden.

FOUR SEASONS, 2800 S. OCEAN BLVD., 561/582-2800

The sleek Four Seasons Palm Beach offers the unparalleled French Riviera-inspired Florie’s, with a team led by two-star Michelin chef Mauro Colagreco. The menu is rooted in classics (like the heirloom tomato and pear carpaccio) with a seasonal spin and exquisite execution. Seaway is the resort’s more casual restaurant, with a European terrace vibe and great ocean vistas. Expect the best from both.

PICCOLO GELATO, 66 VIA MIZNER, 561/814-5966

This cozy, indulgent gelato shop tucked discreetly in Via Mizner is a wide draw for Palm Beachers in search of homemade gelato, gelato pops, gelato cakes, espresso and Italian specialty sodas. This is where you go when the grandkids are in town or if you just want to feel like a kid again.

PICCOLO MONDO, 87 VIA MIZNER, 561/655-9599

Piccolo Mondo is elegant Renato’s (next door) casual little sister, serving yummy wraps, sandwiches, salads and pastas in a

casual atmosphere. It’s open from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., and is perfect for an after-tennis meal, or lunch on the run—with a decidedly sumptuous spin, of course. This is, after all, Palm Beach.

PIZZA AL FRESCO, 14 VIA MIZNER, 561/832-0032

Pizza al Fresco offers excellent dining (indoors and out) in a romantic via, but without the— ahem—romantic prices normally attached to island dining. You can choose from apps and entrees ranging from lobster bisque, lamb sausage, roast chicken and several pastas to a battery of pizzas locals swear by—especially the Palm Beach Pizza, with mozzarella, smoked salmon, caviar, red onions, capers and sour cream. This hidden gem is a locals’ favorite.

Ta-boo is a tradition on the Avenue, and arguably its most wellknown culinary landmark, the place to see and be seen for more than 60 years and counting. It is a local favorite for its happy hour, and regulars know to ask for certain tables. Ta-boo stories include the one that says the Bloody Mary was invented here, and that Joe Kennedy had a tryst with Gloria Swanson in the ladies’ room. True or false, it’s that kind of place—full of great gossip, better steaks and a buzz that never really goes away.

Preserving Our Past

The Historical Society of Palm Beach County is the steward of Palm Beach and Worth Avenue history—as well as that of all of Palm Beach County The Historical Society of Palm Beach County (HSPBC) was formed in 1937, and

is dedicated to presenting and archiving the history of Palm Beach County from its home in a historic 1916 courthouse in downtown West Palm Beach. The collection was launched by a donated black-and-white photograph of a street scene from West Palm Beach attorney A. Stanley Bussey. The Society states that “The later creation of the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum in 2008 finally allowed the collection to fully serve its critical purpose: to share and showcase the rich history of Palm Beach County and the larger context of Florida’s heritage...” This year, the Worth Avenue Association is dedicating the proceeds from its popular walking tours to the HSPBC. We talked to the Society’s president and CEO Jeremy Johnson to find out more about the HSPBC, and how important it is to Palm Beach County. “We are actually the repository for the county’s history,” says Johnson. “The heritage community in Palm Beach County is quite expansive, from the northern part of Palm Beach County—The Loxahatchee River Historical Society—all the way down to the Boca Raton Historical Society and Museum. As the county’s host society, we present and collect the county’s history, but we are great collaborators and partners with everyone throughout the heritage community in Palm Beach County.” Johnson says the HSPBC has the most extensive archives in the county, with more than four million images, some dating to 1894, when the city of West Palm Beach was incorporated. “In the summer of 2019, as the Palm Beach Post was being sold, we acquired the entire photographic collection of the Post and the Palm Beach Daily News. That doubled the number of our images. Our images and our collections are what make us so significant... Acquiring that collection required us to seek

Above, HSPBC President and CEO Jeremy Johnson, and below, behind the scenes at one of the museum’s archive rooms

outside storage space, and we are working to digitize them each and every day. I think we have 130,000 electronically digitized so far.” Among all those images and artifacts, one of the most rare collections includes original architectural drawings. “One of the very significant elements of our collection, which made us very important to the town of Palm Beach, is our architectural drawings. Several years ago, the town of Palm Beach completely refurbished Addison Mizner’s centennial fountain. We have the architectural drawings for that structure, so when it was time to redo the structure, the Historical Society played an invaluable role from a landmarking and architectural perspective. We were able to provide the town of Palm Beach the original rice paper architectural drawings; that was instrumental in helping that project move forward, because without it, it would have been just a guess of what was what.”

The Society also provides educational outreach, including pop-up exhibits, throughout the county as well as curriculum for fourth and seventh graders throughout all schools. And it’s also looking to expand, to afford more room for collections as well as workspaces and classrooms. Johnson is grateful to the Worth Avenue Association for honoring the Society this year with the proceeds from its walking tours, and says the importance of Palm Beach cannot be overlooked. “The town of Palm Beach is where it all began. … The development of Palm Beach and Worth Avenue led to further development all around the county. Worth Avenue attracts people to Palm Beach County from all over the world. That is so important to Palm Beach County’s economy.” The museum is on the second floor of the restored 1916 Courthouse, 300 N. Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach.
