“Great achievements are nurtured with the cooperation of many minds with a common vision working toward a common goal.’
This show has been so much fun! The cast has shown an incredible degree of commitment to rehearsals, and always turn up with smiles on their faces, ready to work. It makes the job of directing so much easier. Even the dreaded weekend rehearsals have been met with a smiling face and a readiness to work that I haven’t seen for quite a few years. This is what makes the experience of directing such a joy and a pleasure: the children we have the privilege of working with.
It has been a long process - almost 9 months of planning, preparation, rehearsals and getting everything ready on stage as well as behind the scenes. We have a dedicated troupe of brilliant and engaged Tech students who are often the unsung heroes of our school productions: there at all the rehearsals, making sure the actors are lit and can be heard, but silent and shadowy themselves.
A school production is an enormous effort by a huge team of people. We have the student actors, singers and dancers. Then there are the backstage heroes who do so much to get everything ready. We have been extremely fortunate this year to have had offers of help from members of the teaching staff: Mr Sonsin who has been a gift to the rehearsal process, especially in the construction of movement sequences for the chorus. Ms Vaghela who has not only taken on the budget for the show, but is also an able stage manager. Mrs Osman who has taken the co-ordination of costumes off my to-do list and liaised with Jenny our costume lady to get more than 100 outfits ready and prepared for the show. Miss Pinnington and Mrs Skerne who have done an outstanding job of dressing the set and spent many, many hours of their time to make it ‘live’ in the space. It takes a village not only to raise a child but also to launch a production and I could not be more grateful for the tsunami of support that this production has had.
I hope that you all feel that our efforts have paid off.
Enjoy the show!
Ms Sara Carter
As the Music Director, it has been an absolute joy to bring Cole Porter's iconic score to life. Cole Porter was a rare talent among Broadway composers. His works are celebrated for their clever wordplay, memorable melodies, and sophisticated style and so many of them are still known and loved today. The music in Anything Goes, with its blend of jazz, swing, and Broadway styles, perfectly captures the spirit of the 1930s and adds a vibrant backdrop to the story.
Our talented cast and orchestra have worked tirelessly to master the intricate rhythms and harmonies of Porter's compositions. From the toe-tapping title number "Anything Goes" to the heartfelt "I Get a Kick Out of You" and the exuberant "Blow, Gabriel, Blow," each song is a testament to Porter's genius and the enduring appeal of his work. This show has been a real challenge for our singers, both the soloists and ensemble singers but I’m sure you will agree, they have done an incredible job learning so many songs and delivering them with such enthusiasm, and professionalism.
It has been such a pleasure to work with all of our talented students on this production, as well as the entire production team, whose dedication and passion have made this show such a joy to be part of. To our audience, thank you for joining us on this musical journey. We hope you enjoy the show as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you.
Mr Matt Price
What a treat to have been surrounded by Cole Porter’s music in our production of Anything Goes. I feel extremely privileged to have witnessed the cast’s musical journey over the past few months, beginning with helping to learn the songs for the auditions to more recently, helping with the big Chorus numbers.
Cole Porter wrote both the music and the lyrics for his songs and musicals. He has been described as “one of the wittiest of all lyricists, with a subtlety of expression and a mastery of interior rhyme.”
Cole Porter’s songs are considered ‘timeless’ and are included in The Great American Songbook…His songs are challenging with many difficult harmonies, chromatic passages and modulations. I am so proud of the cast for embracing all of his musical intricacies and taking our production of the show to what it is today.
Having played Hope Harcourt in my school’s production many years ago, it has been a ‘delovely’ walk down Memory Lane. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the songs develop…for the students to have transitioned from Cole Porter novices, having never heard his music before to not being able to get the songs out of their heads.
I hope you all feel as proud as I am and thoroughly enjoy watching the students bring Cole Porter’s music to life.

It has been a privilege for the Dance Department to work with such hard working and passionate students and we can’t wait to share their talent with you. The choreography for Anything Goes explores the vibrant energy of 1930s Broadway.
Join us on a fast-paced, intricate, and dynamic journey where we bring to life the vibrant numbers of "Anything Goes" and the powerful "Blow, Gabriel, Blow." Our students' dedication and passion shine through in every step, making this performance a testament to their hard work and the supportive environment we cherish at JESS.
Throughout this process, we have particularly enjoyed the extended rehearsals, which have allowed us to refine our performances and build strong, positive relationships with our JESS performers. Excellence is important to us at JESS, but throughout this journey, our school values of care, respect, and commitment have been evident in the way students have worked collaboratively in many respects; making this experience truly enriching and rewarding.
