Discover Discover is the first step for creating a new product. Everything in our life could be redesigned and be even better. It needs practice and takes time. Four layers analysis can help us to explore and analyse an object deeper and think from different points of view.
6
4 Layers Object Analysis
Four layers analysis is a method that helps us observe an object much deeper. It is not just only what you see, and there are more things that you can dig in and realize. A good product contains more meaning than what you see.
What do you see? What does it mean? What does it evoke? What contexts will it be used in?

Define Interviewing with real users could help us understand users to create exciting and practical products into the market. Using 5W & 1H question is a simple and easy way to find insights. During this process, opportunities would be found for designers
13
Interview
According to the interview with users, using keywords as a beginning point can expand new thoughts. During this process, more concepts would come out, and it could be a fantastic result. Q: Who are you? A: I am Feng and I am a product design student in Brunel University Q: What features should a bottle opener have? A: If this bottle opener is functional and colourful and also it has strong structure and nice shape, I would like to use it and show to my friends.
Feng Male (25) Design Student
Insights • Interesting • Office • Easy to get • Integrate my daily stuff 14
Q: When do you use it? A: If I want to have a soda or beer or when I have friends and I want to treat them with beer. Q: Where do you use it? A: It is a very useful tool and I would like to use it when I want to have a beer, such as kitchen, balcony, bars, studio, living room and even when I am working in the office. Q: Why do you want to buy it? A: I like some interesting products, so if there is a bottle opener with strange shape, interesting operation which can give me fun experience or even integrate my daily life. It would be wonderful. Q: How often do you use it? A: I do not use it frequently. I use it when sometimes I want to drink beer, since bottle opener is not easy to get.
Mind maps
According to the interview with users, using keywords as a beginning point can expand new thoughts. During this process, more concepts would come out, and it could be a fantastic result.
Doing mind maps in a group and sketch in a short time is an approach to inspire more ideas.
15
Individual first mind maps In the first mind map, using the word from the insight of an interview is a quick way to start. There was nothing that inspired me. However, it is still a useful practice to think broadly.
Individual second mind maps In the second mind map, it stared from different something interesting words came out, and it was fun to develop more in the next step. Spoon, Paper Clip 16
Develop In this progress, generating ideas as many as you can could help develop concepts. Imagination should not be limited, and every good product comes from crazy ideas. Do brainstorming with your team members and do not judge or complain about every thought, which is vulnerable to be destroyed by others. The best way in this step is encouraging people to think more and creatively instead of judging their ideas.

Prototype “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” —Thomas Edison
Bottle opener + Spoon The first idea of the bottle opener is that it could combine to a spoon, and trying to use different methods to make this prototype to make it more real to be used.
22
Bottle opener + Paper clip Using different materials can be easy to achieve the purpose, for instance, cardboard can be made instantly and easy to be got, and hosfoam can be used to make whatever form. In this concept, fitting hands is a tricky part to check, therefore creating a prototype is quite essential to check this shape is fit or not. 23
Deliver After making different prototypes and it gets the best result eventually. It fits user’s hands, and it could open a beer. During this process, the best product does not come out at the first idea and does not work in the first prototype. It must be tested and made hundreds of thousands of prototypes, and it would be a successful one.
24
During this entire process, eventually, it came out with a good result that I am satisfied. I learned that design a product is not just focusing on its shape, and it could develop from many aspects. Pay attention to everything surrounded, all of them could be redesigned.
25
Design Communication Communication is a critical skill for a designer. A consistent and clear communication could make people understand what you would like to say easily and quickly.
26
Layout reference
Layout Analysis Understanding layout from other books or magazines is quite essential since it would broaden your horizons and make your message deliver much cleaner and more reasonable.

Scenarios for personas Things for lighting your room. Scenario : People come back to their home, take off your jacket and turn on the light.
Things for dealing with thirsty. Scenario : Water is one of the important facts for people to survive. We need to drink every day and how to drink easily.
Things for making hot milk. Scenario : Novice parents need to make hot milk when they take their babies out of the home. 30
Persona Personas are fictional characters, which designers create based on their research. They could represent the different user type that may use your products or service. This process will help you to understand users’ need and behaviours.

Design Brief A good design brief should provide enough information about the result and criteria. And it should neither be too broad and too specific, since it would limit your imagination and creative ideas.
35
Design a portable milk powder storage device which can make milk suitable temperature for babies when parents are traveling the product should have a fashionable style and be easy to use. 36
Portable Portability is quite an essential feature for this device since people need to take it to other places. It also means it should not be a heavy and big device.
37
Storage This device should have some space to store milk powder. In terms of this concept, storage becomes a keyword for creative thinking.
38
Temperature Temperature is a vital part for making milk for babies. If the temperature is too cold, it would be hard to melt the milk powder, and if the temperature is too hot and it would lose nutrition of milk.
39
Travel This device would be brought with people everywhere when they take their baby to have a travel. During their travel, what problems they will face is need to be considered. 40
Fashionable style Fashion is still important for young parents; they do not want to take clumsy and dull products out with them. Therefore how to make this device in a fashionable style is a goal.
41
Sketch with key words After collecting images of keywords from brief, it is time to do some sketches for our concepts. In this step, it is no limits, and it is free for sketching no matter it is about shapes, materials or function. Exploring new idea is the first thing to concentrate.
42
Observation & Journey Mapping Observation is an essential skill for a designer since the design is in everywhere. Everything will be improved and redesigned; it depends on what people look at things. Mapping a journey of using services or products could help us to analyse step by step and find pain points
43
Laundry Service Laundry service is an essential service for students who live on the campus. This service takes about 90 minutes, including 30 minutes for washing and 50 minutes for drying. In this laundry process also included many inconveniences. As a result, we wanted to record this experience of doing laundry.
44
User Observation Taking dirty clothes out of the room and walking to the laundry room.
1
Putting down the bags of dirty clothes and taking the card to sense the door.
2 Putting the bag on the laundry machine.
4
3 Counting the coins for the laundry machine.
5 Setting the alarm to remind you of finishing the laundry.
7
Opening the door of the laundry machine and putting dirty clothes in.
Inserting coins to the laundry machine.
6 Opening the door of the laundry machine and taking out the clean clothes.
8
Taking the clothes and walking back to the dormitory.

45
Journey Mapping Analyse evert step and see what actions were included, what questions are asked, what moments make the user happy. Find pain points from these every detail and think is there any key features that could help to improve.
46
Making hot milk Making hot milk is a difficult thing when parents take their babies out of their home. They need to prepare milk powder, hot water and remember to put the nursing bottle in their bag.

Visual References & Sketch Development Choose keywords from critical features of journey mapping and get photos with these keywords. This step could help us to have more feeling and understand about them. It does not use imagination to think, and it has real images in front of you, which make things clear. After having a sense of these keywords could start sketching around them.
50
Divide How to divide milk powder is a difficult thing for novice parents. Looking from nature could be an interesting angle to go through, so in this mood board, there are cells and dandelions.
51
Sterilization Baby’s body is not as strong as adults, and they are weak for any things with the virus. In order to take their health, making sure food and milk bottle clean is the most important. Sterilization is a necessary funtion for this device. 52
Remind Parents usually have many things to prepare, and sometimes it is difficult to remember to take everything. As a result, a function of reminding parents is necessary.
53
Warm Keeping milk warm is a problem for parents when they take their baby outside. Sometimes babies would not finish all milk and leave, and it is too cold to drink leftover milk for a baby.
54
Mix Mixing is one step of making milk, it is still taking some times for parents. Is there any a better way to stir or mix milk powder?
55

This pacifier has attached a filter inside, and it can let babies drink milk more healthy. Parents do not need to worry something is dirty for their babies.
61
Filter This device has two inlets, one is for hot water, and another one is for cold water. After the hot and cold water mix, and this device will adjust the temperature, which is suitable to make milk. There is also a filter at the bottom, which could cause water more clean for babies.
62
UV Light Clean water is so much crucial for babies. It is difficult for parents to get clean water out of their home. This bottle includes UV light which could sterilize and make water clean. One button uses for turning on the UV light, and it is easy to use.
63
Adjust Temperature Making suitable hot water is tough when parents are out of their home. This device has attached a screen which could let people choose what they want to drink, and then there are two bars which show the level of hot and cold water people should put in, and it can make suitable temperature water.
64
Role Play Prototypes should be tested by people since only people use them and problems will appear. A good product could sell to people after these problems have been solved and improved.
65
Operating steps
Putting water in this device.
In role play process, designers could understand that how people will use their products. And they can record every step as much as possibe, it does not only crecord their operation but also their feeling of his product.
Close the lid.
User has feedback that is lid will lose easily. It is a need to consider to improve it.
66
Choose the temperature of drinks.
Wait for heating.
This is a wrong step of the product; at first, this product does not have a heating function.
