letter from the editor Sitting atop my desk is a piece of yellow notebook paper. Filled with sketches, scribbles and handwritten details, it outlines the very Fall 2014 Style Guide that you are about to page through. Conceived in between waitressing shifts at a restaurant in my hometown, this page followed me everywhere since August, evolving with each new idea that came to mind. Now, after weeks of development, of pulling and styling ensembles, of photo shoots and planning, the Style Guide has come to life. The piece of paper I describe is not just a piece of paper. Rather, it is the culmination of concepts derived from culture, the runway, this very city and, above all, you. More importantly, this yellow page has filtered through an intricate process, just as a designer’s collection is sieved through the fashion industry before its influence trickles into your personal style. In my time as Fashion Editor for Moda, I have emphasized over and over how crucial these notions of inspiration and influence are to fashion. Certainly there is a place for runway and trend dictation, but what truly moves people is not what they see on a catwalk - it’s what they see on real people. Without the personal interpretation of trends, clothes are merely stagnant works of art. Each design may tell a story, but that tale continues with its wearer.

My Fashion Team and I want to help you craft that story this season. Featuring five major fall trends in ten ensembles, we’ve translated observations from the runway into looks that are both wearable for everyday life and easily accessible from two local boutiques, Bop and iona. With styling tips from Moda’s Fashion Writers and inspiration from the catwalk, this guide gives a fresh take on fall trends. In the Fall 2014 Style Guide, we merge the global, local and personal aspects of fashion that Moda’s fashion section has been built upon. In doing so, we hope to enliven and influence your individual relationship with style. After all, fashion has never merely been about clothes – it’s about how those clothes can inspire you. How will you style your story?

LAYERED KNITS By Alexa Carlson

A kiss of cashmere, warm wool and cozy cardigans – could there be anything more archetypally fall? Knits are a staple of the season and donning a head-to-toe ensemble woven with comfort creates the ultimate statement. Inspired by the fall 2014 collections of Michael Kors, Tory Burch and Marc Jacobs, an abundance of layered knits creates the perfect fall look, both on and off the runway. From scarves and pull-overs, to wraps and cashmere leggings, stock your wardrobe with these luxurious pieces to complement the brisk months of autumn.

Bop: 360 Cashmere Sweater, $275 Iona: Velvet Cashmere Cardigan, $365. Raquel Allegra Cashmere Leggings, $420. Iosselliani Necklace, $499. Denis Colomb Travel Shawl, $218. Jerome Dreyfuss Bag, $790

Bop: BB Dakota Jacket, $150. Splendid Sweater, $118. JOA Grey Skirt, $98

1.

STYLE TIPS

Vary Texture: To add intrigue to your ensemble

combine knits with different gauges and fibers. Pair a feather-weight cardigan with a chunky, open-stitch scarf, or match tones and subtle textures to add depth to your look. Featured left, Bop’s grey JOA midi skirt paired with a Splendid cashmere sweater and a BB Dakota jacket demonstrate this styling technique.

3.

Choose Bold Pops of Color: Keeping most of your

layers neutral allows for flexibility, but to make the ensemble interesting, incorporate a pop of rich, seasonallyappropriate color. Hues like emerald, cobalt, or Bordeaux are the perfect complements for fall. Opt for an accessory like a thick scarf or a cool leather bag and you’ll subtly add impact to your ensemble without distracting from its other elements.

5.

2.

Splurge Luxurious Leggings: As Midwest women,

we live in our leggings, but the stylistic appeal of a black cotton pair is minimal to say the least. This season, swap this traditional staple with a thicker, cashmere option like iona’s Raquel Allegra leggings featured on page 5. With an endless amount of versatility woven into their shreddeddetailed seams, they are truly the perfect base for a cozy, layered look.

4.

Play with Shapes: Take full advantage of the layering

effect by picking knits with different necklines, draping and cuts. For example, combine a looser-fitting dolman-sleeve pullover over the top of a curve-hugging sweater dress. For a bolder look, layer two sweaters with differing necklines, keeping your first layer tighter and your second more oversized.

Belt It: For an instant vest, belt a scarf or wrap over a classic, cozy sweater. Pick a slightly thicker fiber, drape it around your neck, and secure it with a belt at your natural waist. Burberry’s fall 2014 collection captured this impeccably and it gave new life to ever-versatile fall accessories.

PRINTS & PLAID By Phebe Myers

This season, eccentric prints and patterns were the highlight of several runway collections. Yet unlike previous seasons, one look was not favored over the other. Instead designers played with variety, incorporating an invigorating mix of geometric, abstract and plaid prints into their models’ ensembles. Thakoon showed vivid, vibrant plaids in captivating silhouettes and Peter Pilotto created his own textures that were worn in shockingly printed ways. In both cases, designers experimented with patterns to devise innovative, attention-grabbing looks. Channel their audacity this season and make this vivacious trend part of your fall wardrobe.

Bop: Clover Canyon Dress, $286

Iona: Timo Weiland Chevron Fringe Tunic, $365 Bop: 3.1 Phillip Lim Satchel, $650 Other: Pointed-toe Booties, Michael Kors

1.

STYLE TIPS

Find Something Fresh: Picking a new item to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe is the fun part.

Look for unique and unexpected prints in bold, fresh colors. Your closet will thank you.

3.

Keep Accessories Simple: Almost every fall runway

showed trendy, all-over prints ensembles featuring pants and tops in the same plaids and patterns. Wear this trend well by keeping your accessories minimal so the bold fabrics can be the highlight of your look.

5.

2.

Fit, Fit, Fit: When styling your own ensemble, it’s

crucial to pay attention to fit, and this is especially true when working with patterns. With so much attention focused on the actual print of your outfit, losing your figure in the mix is the last thing you want to do. Keep the focus on you and not the fabric by tailoring your look and searching for figure-flattering silhouettes.

4.

Experiment with Texture: If all over pattern isn’t

your thing, never fear, this trend still looks amazing when paired with intricate textures. Take, for example, the Timo Weiland chevron dress from iona, featured left. The fringe detail at the bottom of this piece perfectly complements the sleek pattern of the dress, giving it an extra dimension without taking away from the main focus of the look.

Layer, Layer, Layer: Fall fashion in the Midwest is all about layering,

especially when you want to look good, but must cope with the unpredictability of the weather. With this in mind, don’t be afraid to pile on your patterned pieces. Keeping one item neutral, like a pair of dark jeans, incorporate a bright, textured top with a contrasting print. At the end of the day, this trend is all about playing with your style, so don’t be afraid to have fun with fashion – the best ensembles are never taken too seriously anyway.

60’s MOD By Victoria Fok

In the world of fashion, what goes around always seems to come back around, especially when it comes to trends. Featuring sleek and simplistic silhouettes with short, thighgrazing hemlines, 60s mod style resurfaced on the runway for fall 2014, creating must-have looks for the season. From Gucci’s A-line mini dresses to Versace’s bright pink cutout shifts, designers were nostalgic for the decade’s fashion aura – and for good reason. Built upon a sophisticated, minimalist aesthetic, mod style makes a statement – sans accessories and fuss – for a look that is versatile enough for multiple occasions.

Bop: Jack by BB Dakota Dress, $65. Karen Walker Sunglasses, $220

Bop: Splendid Stripe Dress, $148 Iona: L’Agence Jacket, $245

1.

STYLE TIPS

Be Bold: To rock the 60s look, opt for standout pieces

in the decade’s traditionally simple silhouettes. Mod style is all about short, A-line dresses, so to differentiate yourself from the crowd choose skirts and dresses in bright colors. A modest shift dress in a vivid, solid hue, like Bop’s Jack by BB Dakota cobalt dress on page 13, will allow you to make a statement.

3.

Stay Chic in Black and White: The classic B&W

color combo accentuates the silhouettes of 60s ensembles by allowing shape to remain the central focus of your outfit. To add dimension to your look, try to incorporate various textures and prints. Featured left, the striped Splendid dress from Bop pops dramatically when paired with the tweed L’Agence jacket from iona. By putting these two pieces together, 60s structure becomes the ensemble’s statement as modern mixed media styling keeps it grounded in the present.

5.

2.

Accessorize Wisely: Mod style requires minimal accessorizing, so when selecting the perfect addition for your ensemble, make your choice count. From circle sunglasses to bold cat-eye shades, donning 60s-shaped eyewear is an ideal way to subtly adapt this trend to your look. The Karen Walker circle sunglasses from Bop on page 13 capture the decade’s style to a T.

4.

Optimize Outerwear: Outerwear is an important

element of any fall wardrobe, but this fall ditch the typical blazers and leather jackets for a mod, collarless coat. When paired with a short mini dress or even a simple t-shirtand-jeans combo, this type of jacket will add the perfect touch of 60s style to your ensemble.

Make Up for Length Lost: When it comes to 60s mod, shorter hem-

lines are always preferred. To rock this daring length, go for looser, boxier dress shapes. By balancing shortness in this manner, you won’t have to worry about pulling your dress down or leaving too little to the imagination. Additionally, feel free to compensate for lack of length in other ways. Adding a pair of knee-high socks or donning classic opaque tights can be the answer to mediating exposure.

PRIMAL LUXURY By Marissa Monett

Furs made a grandiose statement on the fall 2014 runways, appearing in almost every show in every form. Presenting the material in outrageous proportions, understated details, and shades across the spectrum, designers declared the return of this trend as a versatile wardrobe essential. From Fendi’s massive fur hoods to BCBG’s subtle fur accents, the luxurious texture appealed to all looks. Yet this extravagant runway garment can translate to casual, everyday style as well, adding a touch of warmth and luxury to any fall ensemble.

Bop: Elliatt Fur Vest, $218 Iona: Ottod’ame Tricot Tunic, $280 Other: Black Leather Booties, Target, $35

Bop: John & Jenn Cardigan, $149 Iona: Ottod’ame Camisole Dress, $130 Other: Nude Heels, Calvin Klein

1.

STYLE TIPS

Focus on Fit: By the nature of the material, fur lends

2.

Incorporate Lighter Pieces: Another way to com-

itself to a somewhat bulky structure. Compensate for its oversized structure by looking for fluffy pieces with shorter hemlines or pairing larger ones with form-fitted attire.

pensate for fur’s heavy texture is to contrast its thickness with a slinky, thinner material. Silk or sheer fabrics will tone down the weight of the fur while intensifying its allure. Featured left, the Ottod’ame camisole dress from iona paired with the John & Jenn cardigan from Bop demonstrates the sophistication and strength of this contrast.

3.

4.

Play with Subtle Accents: Sporting the fur trend

doesn’t necessarily mean wearing realistic faux. Try pieces with a similar appearance, like fuzzy knits or feathered details, to mimic the extravagance while minimizing the sometimes egregious feel.

5.

Stick to Neutrals: The runways displayed fur in a

rainbow of colors for this season, but for everyday styling, opt for neutrals. If mixing, try to stick to the same hues, like shades of grey and black. An example of this type of styling can be seen on page 17, with the pairing of iona’s Ottod’ame tricot tunic and Bop’s Elliatt fur vest.

Embrace Comfort and Luxury: Make sure to the get the most from your purchase this fall by mixing your soft fur pieces with both glamorous and relaxed looks. Don’t be afraid to tone it down with a soft sweater or even dress it up with sexy silk and heels.

MENSWEAR By Emma Leuman

The look and feel of menswear has worked its way into women’s style for as long as women have been liberated. By donning typically “male” silhouettes, females exert their power, accentuate their strength, and make a statement. From oversized, boxy jackets to androgynous sweaters and draped pants, women are asserting their femininity this fall by embracing menswear to its full extent. Forget “borrowed from the boys” – this season gender has nothing on your style.

Iona: Ottod’ame Oversized Jacket, $398 Helmut Lang Drape Top, $335 Bop: BB Dakota Leather Skirt, $120

Bop: Sanctuary Sweater, $69 Michael Kors Watch, $250 Iona: Helmut Lang Origami Pant, $220 Other: Oxfords, Halogen

1.

STYLE TIPS

The Beginner’s Approach: To integrate menswear items into your everyday look, start with pieces that

Lace up in Oxfords: When deciding on footwear to incorporate into your look, search for some beautiful

are more androgynous than overtly masculine. A sweater that looks as if it could have been plucked from a man’s closet, like the Sanctuary pull-over featured left, flatters many women. Paired with trouser pants or cigarette skinny jeans, this look is a great way to get started with this trend.

oxfords. A patent leather pair will polish your ensemble, while a subtler patchwork version will keep you grounded in classic men’s style. Either way, the overall structured shape of the flat will highlight the trend and give your outfit the emphasis you’re striving for.

3.

4.

Be Literal: Don’t be afraid to wear actual clothes for

men. Although a suit jacket was originally made with a man’s silhouette in mind, that doesn’t mean that it can’t work for a woman’s figure as well. In fact, an oversized, boxy structure is right on trend for fall, and when paired with something a little sexier, like the Helmut Lang top on page 21, you’ll create a super cool, laid-back look.

5.

Play with Silhouettes: Pairing larger masculine items with form-fitting pieces will add dimension to

your ensemble. Even pairing an oversized blazer or jacket with a dress that has a slightly longer, or shorter, hemline will refine the rough edges of menswear and give your look a sense of balance.

Add a Touch of Femininity: Lastly, remember menswear doesn’t

have to translate into manly. By letting your blazer fall open or the neckline of your sweater dip low, you can embrace the trend of masculinity without completely converting. Including a sophisticated, fluid silhouette while emulating a few menswear pieces will make your look both effortless and soft.
