ANCHORING

The relation of a building to a site, to its culture, and to its metaphysical origins. Exploring anchoring through: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Layering - Stacking textures or materials to create experientially rich environments. Positioning - Joining experiential phenomena and sensations using material. Spatial Fluidity - Placing a mass that works with the existing architecture around the campus. Framing - Using hierarchy of materials for framing views around campus. Movement - Using materials and form to create spaces, and change moods.

Unlearn using architecture as an entity to gentrify an area.

Unlearn expensive materials means good design.

Unlearn reliance on carbon form when designing.

AREA PLAN With multiple entertainment areas around KCAI within a short walking distance, users have the ability to access a wide variety of congregation attractions nearby. Areas include, entertainment, dining, and shopping.

HALLMARK RESEARCH CENTER Research Focus: Combining the concepts of anchoring through experimental practice while focusing on how to apply vernacular and experiential phenomena in everyday design.

Architecture, in an essence, is a work of art which acts as an organic link between concept and form. Pieces cannot be subtracted or added without upsetting fundamental properties. A concept, whether a rationally explicit statement or a subjective demonstration, establishes an order, a field of inquiry, or a limited principle. A place has a purpose, whether explicitly stated or not. These abstract ideas are a mere glimpse at what the research center is focusing on. Taking a large portion of inspiration from the surrounding buildings and area, the Hallmark Research Center will be a ground-breaking institution, pushing the boundaries of what the art world is capable of. Transforming how people encounter and use the site in which their structure is situated in.

USER DURATION DIAGRAM

From collective research of KCAI and other universities, we were able to analyze user duration. With limited users being present on campus during summer, this would allow specific h-vac systems to be stalled in order to propose a sustainable design. Being that there are limited amounts of users on campus throughout the night, this would allow certain lighting and mechanical systems, to be stalled as well naturally helping our building.

Our building is located on the south end of the KCAI campus and faces sits in a threshold space between campus green spaces and public downtown Kansas City. We placed our building in the location shown because of its threshold properties and wanted to establish a space that would connect the public to campus and vise versa.

SITE ANALYSIS DIAGRAM

Key concepts taken away from the site analysis research included wind direction, surrounding site context, building adjacencies, and campus circulation. Main entrances to the building were thought about in reference to the surrounding buildings on campus. Most entrances to building are facing the green space to give easy access to the students This would follow our exploration of spatial fluidity and understanding the transitioning of space.

VIEWS

Located on the southern side of campus, where the views are very good. The views that we are trying to highlight are the green space into campus, the Nelson Atkins Museum, the smaller green space and park that is straight south of our site, and the large hill full of vegetation to the west of our site. SITE SELECTION Site selection was based on external conditions such as views, circulation, ventilation, lighting, surrounding materiality, etc.

COURTYARD REMOVAL After selecting what site to place our mass on, we chose to go forward with a rectangular form in order to relate to existing site conditions.

BASEMENT ADDITION Pulling out a center void from the mass allowed us to create a beautiful center exterior gathering space for students, faculty, and public.

ELEVATED SLAB | SHADING & LIGHTING Ventilation passes just beneath the elevated slab and it shades the exterior courtyard from harsh sunlight in the afternoon.

CORE INSERT Placing the cores on the corners of the structure allowed us to maximize program space and create an overhanging top floor.

CANTILEVER The cantilever element provides unique light and shading qualities within and on the exterior of the building.

CIRCULATION

Another consideration when designing was how accessible is our site to places on and off campus, thus circulation was taken into account. The Location on campus allowed for a large influx of circulation. It is easily accessible to all of campus and the Nelson Atkins and Kemper Museums. Because of these qualities, our site is versatile and draws a lot of foot, bicycle, and vehicular traffic.
