RAMPARK CONSERVATORY

Fall 2022 - 5th Year

Project Team: Sebastian Toalson Professor: Matt Miller Grasshopper, Rhino, Lumion, Photoshop, Illustrator

This project embraces the natural life of a building and its material, celebrating the effects of deterioration and time. By highlighting the old, and implementing new architecture into the space, the Rampark is transformed into a conservatory celebrating the beauty of time. The space is revived through the incorporation of growth inspired by the natural encroachment of foliage.

1/2 Scale Model Process

Formwork Rebar

Plywood is measured and cut to create a structured formwork to pour the concrete into. Screws are strategically placed for disassembly after pouring concrete.

#4 rebar is welded into to shape of a “T” to be placed into the formwork for added stability of the concrete. Rebar placement is measured and noted for drilling through concrete later.

Concrete

Quikrete concrete is mixed with water and shoveled into the formwork with the rebar placed inside it. The form is periodically shaken to release air pockets. The surface of the concrete is leveled with a 2x4.

Drill Holes

A 5/16” drill bit and the addition of water is used to drill through the concrete. Holes are drilled at precise angles to give the illusion of the steel tubes being continuous through the concrete.

Fasteners Steel Tubes Pins Destruction

1” x 1” base plates are cut drilled to have 5” x 3/8” diameter screws pass through them. Screws are run through the concrete with base plates placed on both ends of the screw and secured with a nut.

Tubes are cut to length and heated with a torch to bend to precise angles for tube alignments and a flat model base. The tubes are tack welded and then securely welded to the base plates. Welds are smoothed with a grinder.

Holes are drilled through the fastened steel tubes where tube-to-tube connections are needed. Threaded rods are run through the tubes and tack welded into place. Welds are ground flat to appear invisible.

To create a deteriorated appearance, a sledge hammer is used to deconstruct the concrete. The cracked concrete and exposed rebar highlights the model’s materiality and deterioration.

ANCHORED SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

Spring 2021 - 3rd Year

Project Team: Mackenzie Modde, Ryker Hoy

Professor: Peter Olshavsky

Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator

On the campus of the Kansas City Art Institute and situated between the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and The Nelson-Atkins Museum we propose an architecture program be added to the campus through anchoring. Anchoring is the relation of a building to its site, culture, and metaphysical origins. We explore this through layering, positioning, spatial fluidity, framing and movement.

MONTESSORI SCHOOL

Spring 2020 - 2nd Year

Individual Project

Professor: Zac Porter Rhino, VRay, Photoshop, Illustrator

This study of Montessori education explores materiality through its physical and experiential qualities. Pushing the understanding of typical column use, this project encourages children to investigate, interact and learn through discovery, creating a dialog between the expected material and playful unknown.

HISTORICAL VISITOR CENTER

Fall 2021 - 4th Year

Project Team: Josh Dickey, Ben Van Brocklin Professor: Sarah Karle Rhino, Lumion, Photoshop, Illustrator

Located on the site of Kearney, Nebraska’s State Historical Park, this Visitor Center preserves and illuminates the rich history of Fort Kearney. This project explores immersive design experiences through the integration and consideration of historic site aspects. This is achieved through site integration using elevation changes and reincorporation of historic site qualities.

Mass Cut and Raise Pull Mass Into Site

Started as a bar oriented towards the parade ground.

To absorb the south sunlight the form was split and the back was raised. This created a clerestory window that spanned to length of the mass.

Extruded portions of the mass to integrate the building and site. The extrusions of mass created a hierarchy of interior spaces.

Site Pushes into Mass Roof Pitch

The site lls the gaps created by the building extrusion, creating a hierarchy of exterior spaces.

The gable roof is pitched for the prairie grass and water runo into the site. The Exhibit extends out with a at pitch.
