ClockCare
OBSERVATION & RESEARCH Nowadays, people live longer than before so there are more and more elderly people in population. Many of them need to be taken care carefully for some chronic diseases. However, pain doesn’t just happens to them, their caregivers could also suffer from big pressure and gradually having mental and physical health problems of their own, especially for those who take care of old people with dementia.
CAREGIVER’S PROBLEMS
RATES OF DEMENTIA
Dementia is a syndrome in which there is deterioration in memory, thinking, behavior and the ability to perform everyday activities. For caregivers of dementia, they have to do almost everything for the person they take care of. At the same time, they have cores of their own. That is, their daily schedules which are put in two people’s lives could be a big mess and might drive them to crazy. Besides the stress of day-to-day care, watching their loved one’s health deteriorate and having to make difficult decisions about long-term care can also leave anyone feeling overwhelmed and exhausted.
According to a report of World Health Organization :
According to a report of Alzheimer’s Association: 2010
About 5%~10% of population aged 65 and over in developed countries have dementia.
More than 60 percent of Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers rate the emotional stress of caregiving as high or very high.
2030
2050
Worldwide, 35.6 million people have dementia and there are 7.7 million new cases every year. The total number of people with dementia is projected to almost double every 20 years, to 65.7 million in 2030 and 115.4 million in 2050.
DESIGN GOAL
Helping caregivers take care of dementia in a more organized way and somehow release their anxiety and stress.
Taking Care of Dementia Basic daily activities:
EATING
DRESSING
BATHING
Among all, eating is the most basic need and the most frequent challenge in daily life of dementia people, and caregivers need to prepare at least 3 meals for them a day. Furthermore, for many old people dementia is not the only disease they have so they take more than one kind of medicine a day. Therefore, it’s not an easy case for their caregivers to remember all the times for helping them eat and helping them take medicines.
77% of senior have two or more chronic conditions.
More than 40 percent of people over age 65 take five or more medications.
Multiple Medicines and Poor Appetite Elderly people with multiple diseases can often end up taking multiple medicines at the same time. With multiple medicines, if the schedule of eating medicine isn’t made properly, there is an increased chance of side effects, interactions between different medicines and problems taking them correctly.
Poor appetite, cognitive impairment, physical disabilities and sensory disabilities (hearing and sight loss) can cause the person with dementia to have problems of eating, therefore, many of them need caregivers to help them eat. Medication is a common reason why a person with dementia has poor appetite, and reducing the quantity of every meal at the same time increasing the number of meals a day is one of the solutions.
IDEA DEVELOPMENT
Put pills and tools for eating into a clock and arrange the eating and drugging schedule directly in the clock.

If there are pills in the plate on the cup, that means it’s time for eating medicine, and the cup can be used as container for water.
Wash the used cup and put it back for the next schedule to use.
Feeding becomes an easy case when using the cup which has a special shape. Congee-like food for elderly can be deliverd into the mouth along the sharper side of the cup by the spoon. This will reduce the chance of droping food.
It’s convenient to hold the plate and the cup together.
CatcherTeeth
OBSERVATION Problem of Showering Water won’t always flow fluently into the drain like the picture on the left, because the flow could be blocked by toggled hair and dust.
A Common Solution Using a drain cover or a hair catcher is a common solution, however, when cleaning or removing the cover, it’s hard to avoid having fingers touch the dirty hair and dust without using other tools or tissue paper .
Is There Any Other Solution Which Is More Convenient?
IDEA DEVELOPMENT If the drain cover is a combination of two comb-like pieces, hair toggled on them can be removed easily by separating the two parts and crossing the teeth of them to comb the hair away.

FINAL CONCEPT & RENDERING
Radius: 5cm
1.5x1x1 cm, comfortable for two fingers to handle.
1.1 cm in height to protect fingers from touching the teeth. The curve shape could let it be cleaned easily.
Lower to let hair and dust flow in with water.
The alternate spaces on the edge of the comb are left for teeth of the other one. Slightly hold by each other, the two pieces won’t split when they are taken to a trash can.
The outer (handle side) is made of rubber-like silicone. It’s flexible and soft so people don’t feel hurt when step on it occationally.
The inner (teeth side) is made of plastic.
Squeeze
Air
Cavites on the back help fix the CatcherTeeth on floor or bathtub like suckers do. Slightly squeezing the holder with two fingers can change the air pressure in the cavity and then the product can be fixed or lift.
STEPS OF USING 1
Put the CatcherTeeth on a drain, and let it catch hair for you while showering.
2
3
separating the combs can help loose the entangled hair.
put fingers on the handles and take the product to a trash can or other places for storaging hair and dust.
4
cross the teeth of the combs and scratch away dust and hair with one of the combs from the other one and vice versa.

The Trend Of Working At Home Now there are more and more people working at home. Take American for example, One in five Americans work at home, and the number is expected to increase by 63% in the next five years, according to a study by the Telework Research Network. Also, a chinese magazine estimated that there will be about one hundred million people work at home inChina in the next ten years.
Problem Of Working At Home Being with and taking care of kids is one of the biggest advantages of working at home. However, there are sometimes problems of concentration since there is inevitable push and pull between being a parent and being a worker.
The Reason Why Kids Interrupt Working Parents One of the reasons why kids interrupt their parents’ attention on work is that they need parental attention.
5 basic components of parental attention :
Closeness
(physical distance)
Emotion
Words
Touch
Time
The Imperfection Of Working Place At Home
Working places at home for adults and kids are so different and separated, couldn’t fulfill kids’ need for the 5 components of parental attention mentioned previously.

How Do Plants in Living Environment Affect Human Beings?
According to Texas A&M AgriLife Research, benefits of plants to people include: Concentration and Memory. Being around plants helps people concentrate better in the home and workplace. Moreover, being outside in a natural environment can improve memory performance and attention span by twenty percent.
Environment with plants affect not only individual, but also relationship between people.
PLANTS
Accelerates Healing Process. The presence of plants in hospital recovery rooms and/or views of aesthetically-pleasing gardens help patients to heal faster, due to the soothing affects of ornamental horticulture. Improves Relationships/Compassion. People who spend more time around plants are much more likely to try and help others, and often have more advanced social relationships. Improved Human Performance/Energy. Spending time in natural environments makes people better at doing their jobs. It also increases energy levels and feelings of vitality.
INDIVIDUAL
PEOPLE
In What Way Do Plants Exist in Public Area of Crowded Asian Cities? Areas for plants and areas for people to stay are so separated. There is not much space for growing plants because it is too crowded to have additional place for plants when many people can’t find enough one.
Another Phenomenon Of East Asian Cities The weather in summer is always hot and humid, people hardly feel comfortable outdoor without air conditioner, especially in cities with lots of buildings and lack of green environment.
Why Not Combine Plants Into Outdoor Furniture? In this way, plants could be closer to people’s lives and help people be more comfortable and closer to each other. Also, plants will not occupy place for people and could somehow help reduce the high temperature.
DESIGN CONCEPT Create the comfortable feeling of resting under a tree without bothered by rain or dropping leaves and bring people closer.
